We would all like to see a better pass rush, and know that there are huge question marks with the Guards currently on our roster. This year we are faced with less cap space and draft picks to improve in the trenches. Now, even if we signed a FA DE and OG, questions still remain about the other OG spot and our cap would have just enough left to pick up cheap quality depth and competition at other positions. Just draft another Guard, you say? Hold on to that thought for a second.
Last year we pigeon holed ourselves in the first rounds of the draft and missed on some very good DT prospects that have helped a number of teams this year. Two playoff teams converted DT's into starting OG's this season, while drafting DT's earlier than OG's (who did not even start). One team has one of the best D-lines in the league now (CAR), and the other is going to the Super Bowl (SEA). Now, neither has the best O-line in the league, but their not terrible either. Unlike the Bucs, who have a relatively terrible O-line and pass rush.
I am not making a case for this, but pointing out an option. If we are in a position to draft BPA, it will only help us in the long run. Would an upgrade at DT be off the table just because we may want another OG? Could we possibly look to convert Akheem Spence to OG? He is slightly smaller than Joseph, but has above average arm length for an OG. Would the new coaching staff have the imagination to try to utilize his brute strength on the O-line since he can not provide much of a pass rush? Lovie said it all starts in the trenches.
Just something else to pass the time until the draft.
