Johnny Football

There will be some people who argue that we do not need a new quarterback. While I would argue that it isn't our main concern (that would be a pass rushing DE), I think it is our second biggest issue. The playcalling didn't help Glennon, and the situation wasn't ideal. But Glennon was remarkably inconsistent, even for a rookie, and appeared to have regressed as the season went on. In my opinion, I don't think he will ever be a top 15 quarterback in the league, and while the talent surrounding him doesn't necessarily demand that he is great, I would rather take a risk on someone than play it safe with a game manager.

In recent years, rookie quarterbacks have succeeded more than ever before. I think Johnny Manziel would be a good addition to our team. He is a smaller guy (6'1", 210), but he has a big enough arm to make the throws to our vertical threats. He would invigorate the fan base, as he is fun to watch and root for. People may say he is a character risk, but I don't see it. Going out to parties and bars while you're in college is expected. The autograph scandal was a nonfactor. I believe the main reason that people didn't like him is because when he won the Heisman, he was treated as this everyman who was an All American boy and a model citizen. He liked to go out and party, and he didn't fit the narrative, so people backlashed against him. He loves football, and he is a good team leader. His performance in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl yesterday was amazing. He dragged his team back and led the biggest comeback in A&M history. The play that I'm sure everyone has seen was ridiculous, outrageous, unnecessary, and spectacular all at once.

I would rather take Manziel rather than someone like Derek Carr or Brett Hundley. I don't think there is a perfect quarterback prospect in this draft, and I think Manziel is closer to Bridgewater then people think. The mock drafts are still very early, but the prospects that are mocked to us, such as Anthony Barr and Khalil Mack, don't fit needs for us. 7th is a little too early to take a tight end like Eric Ebron or Jace Amaro. Unless we trade up for Jadeveon Clowney, I think we would be best served taking a quarterback, and I think Johnny Manziel would be our best option.
