Josh Freeman Contract: Does the Buccaneers quarterback deserve an extension?

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Will Josh Freeman earn a new contract by the end of the season? The first two weeks must have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scratching their heads.

Josh Freeman is one of the worst quarterbacks in the league statistically this season. Entering the final year of his contract, that's not good. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have to make a decision on Freeman at the end of this season, and so far we haven't seen the improvement everyone had hoped for.

I don't think we saw a very different Josh Freeman last week. He may have played better than his stats suggest, but he wasn't what I would call 'good', either. He still has accuracy issues, still makes some bad decisions and still seems to be a little slow in his dropback and getting through his reads. The latter two led to the two turnovers on the day for the Buccaneers.

Would I give him a new contract based on his play so far this season? No. I need to see him take steps and to improve so that I can believe that he will turn into a true franchise quarterback. It's one thing to start him, as he is the team's best quarterback right now, but another to tie yourself to him for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't be ready to do that.

Keep in mind that re-signing Josh Freeman would not be cheap. Quarterback contracts are expensive in the first place, but if you're going to re-sign Freeman as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you must be committing to him as your starting quarterback. Can you imagine re-signing him to be a backup in this town?

Last week, the results came in a resounding 'no': just 27% of you voted to give Josh Freeman a new contract after the season. What about this week?
