Buccaneers claim DT Chris Jones off waivers, add Russell Shepard in some capacity

USA TODAY Sports

The 53-man roster cuts may have passed, but that doesn't mean the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are done amending their roster.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have claimed defensive tackle Chris Jones off waivers, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. Jones was a sixth-round draft pick for the Houston Texans who notched 12.5 sacks as a senior in 2012 with Bowling Green, which would be his main claim to fame. He managed half a sack in his final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. Jones is most likely to fit as a nose tackle.

In other news, wide receiver Russell Shepard has tweeted that he is now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That might be as a practice squad member, but according to Elliot Shor-Parks of NJ.com he was likely to be signed to the Eagles' practice squad if he passed through waivers. Odds are the undrafted rookie was claimed off waivers by the Bucs.

Shepard posted three catches for 42 yards in the preseason and played his college football at LSU. He posted 1,286 yards from scrimmage in four years, which really doesn't look all that impressive. He may need some time to adjust to the NFL.

It's not yet clear who the Bucs released to accommodate the addition of Jones and Shepard to the roster.

In addition, Wilson reports that tight end Danny Noble has been signed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad. We should have more news on the team's practice squad over the next couple of days.
