NFL Roster Cuts: Buccaneers release S Sean Baker per report

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Bucs are apparently releasing one of the safeties at the bottom of the roster as they approach the 53-man roster deadline.

According to Max Luckan of the National Football Post, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released safety Sean Baker. That's not too surprising, as the Buccaneers have quite a few safeties on the roster and Baker was pretty far down the list. He did see extended playing time in the fourth preseason game, but apparently couldn't distinguish himself.

Mark Barron, Dashon Goldson and Ahmad Black are almost certain to make the roster, with Cody Grimm and Keith Tandy fighting for a fourth and possibly fifth safety spot. The Bucs like to play with three safeties in some nickel and dime packages, so keeping five on the roster is not out of the question.

Baker is the third roster move we're aware of today, with the Bucs cutting Danny Noble and placing Lawrence Tynes on the non-football injury list. The Bucs have to cut at least 19 more players before 6 PM today.

In other news, the New England Patriots released punter Zoltan Meskoaccording to Ben Volin. The Buccaneers loved Mesko in the 2010 NFL draft, but saw the Patriots snag him in the fifth round. They may give Mesko a shot, as replacing Michael Koenen could save them well over $2 million, depending on Mesko's salary.
