I know most of us are ready to anoint Derek Dimke as our place kicker and hopefully he will be as good as Kai Forbath (The talented kicker who we released last preseason who is now with the Washington Redskins). However, before we go that far, it would be great to give him some real competition. I know Lawrence Tynes was picked up by Tampa Bay after the Giants released him about a month ago. Tynes however, probably should have been released last year, he is an aging veteran who will struggle to make anything over 40 yards. He has also not seen the field yet due to injury concerns.
That is Where Dan Carpenter comes in. The pro-bowl kicker was released earlier today by the Miami Dolphins in what appears to be a salary cap move. Carpenter would easily be an upgrade over Tynes and would provide a real competition. Field goals are something we take for granted because Conner Barth has been a very good kicker for us the last few years. However, as it stands right now, place kicking has got to be a concern for us with an aging veteran and an undrafted rookie. If we could get Carpenter for a good price, is will go along ways and help solidify us as a playoff contender.
