So here we are another season about to begin and the predictions are going to start flying. Well as you know from last year’s mildly popular Nostradamus effect I am going to do it again this year. So we start in the NFC West home of the 49ers, Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks. So without further adieu let’s get started:
The San Francisco 49ers
are coming off a huge year after making it to the Super Bowl
and a solid run the year prior. This team has built a power house team in what I think is clearly the best division in football. So picking a winner in this division was difficult. The 49ers were my pick last year to win the division and they clearly did so. This will not be as easy for them as they face increasing competition from within their division. They had a lot of picks and despite losing FS Dashon Goldson
to us they still have a solid defense and a capable offense. I liked their draft picking up Eric Reid
for a lower cost of what Goldson was and building for the future with D-lineman Tank Carradine and RB Marcus Lattimore
. The only question mark I have for this team is at QB. I am not confident that Kaepernick has what it takes to repeat last year’s success but I do think there is enough talent on this team to make another playoff run but the shocker here is that it’s via wild card.
The Arizona Cardinals
recently picked up one of my favorite QB’s in Carson Palmer
they also acquired the services of Brice Arians and are poised to compete with other teams in the division. The defense remains stout and they have added a nice contributor in CB Tyrann Mathieu who I don’t think could have gone to a better team. They added some new pieces at RB via Rashard Mendenhall
and Ryan Williams
but there are question marks of their durability in such a tough defensive division. I still think there is work to be done in Arizona in first year coaches rarely win big quickly. I have this team at the bottom of this tough division.
The St. Louis Rams
are making an attempt to get back to the days of “the greatest show on turf”. They have their team in position to compete and like every other team in this division they have a stout defense. They needed help on defense and while they lost some players on offense most notably WR Danny Amendola
to NE, they picked up a young and talented WR Tavon Austin
who appears to be a perfect fit for them is you believe the local pundits attending their OTA’s. I still see some missing pieces for them on offense and that keeps them out of the playoffs but look for this team to make a big splash soon. They finish third in the division.
So we have the Seattle Seahawks
left and if you’ve been keeping score you know I have them pegged as the division winners. This team is STACKED on both sides of the ball. Stout in your face defense with some much needed elements added like DE Michael Bennett as well as making some much needed speed to be added on offense via WR Percy Harvin
. This team just needed a few pieces to complete their puzzle and they did so beautifully this offseason. They had a good draft to address their needs and made good use of free agency. This team serves as a guide for how up and coming teams should be built. They have really done a good job in acquiring talent between their drafts and free agency and have made this team uber-competitive. I have them eking by as division champs in a tough division but look for this team to go deep in the playoffs this year as well as the next few.
