So here we are another season about to begin and the predictions are going to start flying. Well as you know from last year’s mildly popular Nostradamus effect I am going to do it again this year. So we start in the AFC West home of the Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs and Raiders. So without further adieu let’s get started:
The Denver Broncos
were really good last year finishing 13-3 in the regular season and owning a very weak division. I picked them last year to win it and they certainly did. They have a future first ballot HOF at the helm and have made some really nice offseason moves and draft picks. I really like the moves they made. I think losing some key players will not hurt them as much as some people think and the new additions will make huge impacts. Most notably the loss of Willis McGahee
and the addition of Monte Ball. Also picking up the league leader in receptions in one Wes Welker
helps tremendously. The Broncos were in need of a good slot receiver and now they have one. In short the Broncos win this division again and easily.
The San Diego Chargers
last year went 7-9 and considering the serious loss to offensive weapons in the offseason that’s a pretty respectable record. I think this team had a good offseason and could contend for the division soon but not quite yet. They have some improvements to make in terms of offensive weapons and some secondary help. But this team is a season or two away from competing. I think they may hit .500 but not better.
The Kansas City Chiefs
had the worst record in the league last year and in response to that have fired the old coaching staff and replaced it with one Andy Reid. Now the chiefs had a good offseason and arguably the best offseason in this particular division. They made some long term picks in going o-line with the number 1 overall instead of pulling the trigger on an overvalued QB at that position. They played the draft and offseason smart. Now this team for the most part had some great tools in place to compete for the division but lacked the “it” factor to get them beyond what they have been for the last 2 season. They have made some good moves and I think they will be a force to be reckoned with but not quite yet. Although Alex Smith gives them a better QB than they have had in some time I still don’t think he has what it takes to bring this team much higher. This team gets the close but no cigar award in the division in pulling out a winning season but not good enough to make the playoffs.
The Oakland Raiders
have quietly been one of the best offseason movers and shakers in building a franchise rather than an immediate winner. This team has had some salary cap issues form the AL Davis (R.I.P) era and is quietly rebuilding a giant. I think the offseason they had was built around the future and although they likely know they will fire their coach after another disappointing year this team will soon be restored to glory very soon. I think between the chiefs and the raiders this division will be flipped but for now the raiders will be at the bottom of this weak division.
