2013 NFL Draft Rumors: Oakland Raiders to pick D.J. Hayden 3rd overall?

Bob Levey

There goes the Bucs' top target to trade back up into the first round.

It seems we have some shocking new developments. Cornerback D.J. Hayden has been shooting up draft boards like crazy, and this time it doesn't appear to be just the media finally catching on. It's the result of him passing his medical examinations. The Bucs were reportedly interested in Hayden, but he appears to be completely out of their reach. Especially considering the following.

Is it a smokescreen? Possibly. But I think D.J. Hayden is the best cornerback in the draft, and more importantly: so do Mike Mayock and Greg Cosell. So you know, people who actually know something about football like him, too. Whether the Raiders would actually take him there remains to be seen. They may trade down and then select Hayden.

But this does point to one thing: Hayden falling to within trade range for the Buccaneers is extremely unlikely. Too bad. He looks spectacular on film. The Bucs could look at defensive linemen if they want to trade up instead -- or they could just stay put in the second round and see who falls to them. They could use a cornerback, and plenty of quality prospects should be available in the second round at that position.
