Analyzing the Bucs' field goal success compared to opponents' success

Matt Stamey-US PRESSWIRE

This player is highest scoring playmaker the Tampa Bay Buccaneers possess. He can score in short yardage and he can score from afar. Some of his scoring leaves you in amazement. Yet what he does best is keep us in the game.

It may be difficult to choose those stats with players like RB Doug Martin, WR’s Vincent Jackson, Mike Williams, Tiquan Underwood, and TE Dallas Clark. Yet what a disparity in scoring between the top scorer and the second best scorer.

Player E is Clark. Player D is Jackson. Player C is Williams. Player B is Martin. Player A is not Underwood. That spot is reserved for Connor Barth, the Bucs’ kicker.

Okay so that chart has lots of numbers. The next chart breaks down the field goals into distances as well as compare what opposing kickers did against the Bucs as well to give us fan some perspective.

“Oh my goodness! Are you kidding me?!” That’s the reaction I immediately had after highlighting in the two sections in gold. I mean I collected the data, inputted the data in Excel, and even broke down the field goals made into distances, but it did not amaze me until I saw this comparison chart. I am grateful ESPN already had this stat up on their site with opponents, but I guess the volume did not affect me until I highlighted it as I had other ideas in my head to write about Connor and what else I can do to spruce up this article… I suppose Barth already did that on his own.

We relied upon Barth to score from distances that even our opponents would not even dare to attempt often. (Of course, that just might mean the opposing team can move on our defense to not need to make field goals that far away.) Let us take a closer look at 40 yards and above:

Those are amazing stats that Barth put up. The three 50 yards + field goals missed were 54, 55, and 56 yards long. There should be a different stat like 55 yards + field goals. (Okay, I did make that stat on my Excel program, but there really is no need to be that ana…lytical.) Barth scores more from long distance than our passing game!

Barth could have won the Bucs two more games this past year against the Falcons and Eagles, those darn birds! Barth missed a 56 yard attempt against the Falcons and did not even have a chance to kick a field goal in the Eagles game. But seriously, our offense cannot get us a few more yards to get it on a normal field goal range as revealed with our opponents’ attempts and makes. But lost amidst the Pro Bowlers on offense, Freeman’s future, the secondary, Revis, Goldson signing, our kicker gets little to no love. Well, Barth, this article is for you, the only consistently good thing this team possesses. (And don’t worry about the team signing Kaeding… I hope.)
