Chris Gamble cut by the Panthers

The Carolina Panthers announced cornerback Chris Gamble was released Friday. Gamble missed the last 12 games of 2012 with a shoulder injury. He's played every down of his nine-year NFL career in Carolina and holds the franchise record with 27 interceptions.

The team saves $7.9 million against the salary cap with his release, according to multiple reports.

"I appreciate the contributions of Chris during my first two years as head coach and to the organization for many years," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a press release. "He always handled things the right way and we wish him the best."

ProFootballFocus reported Gamble held quarterbacks to a 45 completion percentage and a 53.3 passer rating against his coverage in 2011. Gamble turns 30 years old Monday.

Is he worth it?
