Atlanta Falcons rumors: Tony Gonzalez likely to return

J. Meric

It looks Tony Gonzalez is once again returning to torment Buccaneers fans. Oh what a joyous occasion. According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Gonzalez is turning into Brett Favre and would be willing to return for some $7 million and a chance to skip most of the offseason. One Falcons player told Cole"He will come back if they pay him $7 million and he doesn't have to do training camp."

"He will come back if they pay him $7 million and he doesn't have to do training camp."

And supposedly, the Falcons are fine with paying him that kind of money.

That's all we need: another year of facing an old, slow tight end who can't block and yet somehow manages to destroy every team he faces. Gonzalez is such a weird player to watch work: he just gets open and catches the ball. Every.single.time. It's frustrating to watch him work the middle of the field, especially so with the Buccaneers struggling to stop anything through the air as it is. Hopefully Mark Barron will have improved his skills in coverage by next season.

In 11 career games, Gonzalez has managed to catch 58 passes for 599 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Buccaneers. That's more than all but one tight end has ever managed to do against the Buccaneers -- and that other tight end was Steve Jordan, who leads Gonzalez only because he faced the Bucs in 9 more career games. I am not looking forward to seeing Gonzalez on the field again next season.

The upside: the salary cap hit would likely prevent them from retaining Brent Grimes. So there's that.
