2013 NFL Free Agency: Mike Williams, Buccaneers push back contract talks

USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Mike Williams have postponed their contract talks, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Not because they can't agree on compensation, but because the Buccaneers want to keep their agenda free to delve into free agency and spend a lot of time on the draft over the coming months. The Bucs still intend to sign Williams to an extensions to improve on his extremely cheap contract as a former fourth-round draft pick -- they'll just do it later this season.

Williams certainly deserves an improved contract, having put upt 193 catches for 2,731 yards and 23 touchdowns in his first three seasons. He had a disappointing second season and probably isn't a good number one receiver, but he was more than good enough as a second receiver alongside Vincent Jackson last season.

The interesting news here isn't necessarily that the Bucs are pushing back contract talks. It's that they are doing so because they're going to be busy in free agency. Whether that means re-signing their own players, like Michael Bennett, Roy Miller and EJ Biggers, or going after some bigger names in free agency remains to be seen. But it's the umpteenth indicator that the Buccaneers won't be sitting still this offseason.
