Bob Costas interview with Greg Schiano

BOB:

Greg, it seems like a lot of Tampa fans are calling for your head. What do you say to the fan that wants to see you fired?

GREG:

F**K THEM! If they think they can do any better I'll punch them in their throat.

BOB:

That seems a little harsh. And may I remind you this is a family network.

GREG:

Bob, I'm all about winning! And I'm not here to please the whiners who have nothing better to do than play Monday morning quarterback.

BOB:

Ok, point taken. But at 0 and 8 is that really a valid argument? I mean don't you feel some accountability to the fan base that essentially pays your salary?

GREG:

Well, Bob, I haven't had a chance to look at the tape yet. I've had a lot on my plate with my various charity functions and such.

BOB:

Well, I'm glad you brought that up. It seems there have been reports that you told a former player that he couldn't bring his charity kids to the facility. Was that blown out of proportion?

GREG:

Well, Bob, I'm glad I get a chance to clear the air on that. You see, I like to run a tight ship if you will. And one thing I'm not going to tolerate at my practices is laughter. And those kids were laughing and cutting up and just plain acting like children out there. And we don't need that kind of distraction. I don't want our players getting any bad ideas that they can goof off like that. And besides, kids make Bill Sheridan nervous.

BOB:

I'd like to ask you your opinion on some football related things and get your take on them. We'll run down the list and you just give me a short answer.

1. How do you feel about zone coverage?

GREG:

Nah, I don't really watch much TV. I did like that Gilligan character though. And the professor guy on Lost In Space.

BOB:

Uhhmm...OK? 2. What sort of half-time adjustments do you usually make if your down by a couple scores?

GREG:

Oh, that's easy. I don't want to give away any secrets here but I have a system we developed when I was coach at Rutgers. Usually, the players eat a big meal the night before a game. All that food weighs you down. If you can shed a half a pound or even a pound of weight by taking a nice dump at half-time, well, that gives you a quickness advantage over your opponent. That's why we come out playing so fast in the second half.

BOB:

Are you high? I mean,seriously?

GREG:

Oh I don't tolerate drugs on my team. That's why I got rid of that dope head Freeman.

BOB:

Do you see yourself coaching the Bucs next season?

GREG:

That's not up to me. But we're going to continue to get better. We're almost there. Once every man on the team completely buys into our system then we'll start finishing these games out. We may only win a few games this year but by the end of training camp next year we will be one of the best prepared teams in the league.

BOB:

What sort of things do you do in the off season to prepare yourself and get better?

GREG:

I like to mow the lawn. I mow it sometimes 2, even 3 times a day. Got to get the grass nice and low. Really cut into it.

BOB:

Well, that's all the time we have. We'd like to think Coach Schiano for giving us an inside look at the man behind the 0 and 8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

GREG:

Are you mocking me? You little man, I'll knock your...END OF TRANSMISSION
