Jaguars win, Buccaneers now the sole winless NFL team

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only winless team in the NFL. They may hold the top NFL draft pick (for now), but that is an ugly stain.

If before the season you had told me the Bucs would be 0-8 and the only winless team at one point this season, I would have laughed in your face. I would have told you how this team was filled with talented players, that no matter how horribly the quarterback played they'd find a way to win a few games, that Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson would turn this

And yet, here we are. The Jacksonville Jaguars just beat the Tennessee Titans and they have their first win of the season, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still without a single win. The Jaguars have their first win before the Bucs do. The talentless, injury- and suspension-wracked Jaguars.

While some fans will be happy that the Bucs are winless given the prospect of drafting someone like Teddy Bridgewater, I'm not. I can't be happy that the Bucs are at least for one day officially the worst team in the NFL. No one should be happy with that. They should be pissed off, sad, angry, disappointed. Happy? I can see the upside of drafting Bridgewater, but I'm never going to happy that the Bucs are horrible.

The Bucs will have a chance to remove the stain of being winless from their record tomorrow, when they play the Miami Dolphins in their own stadium. They have a few more opportunities to win games, too, with next week's game against the Atlanta Falcons at home, week 16 against the St. Louis Rams and week 17 against the New Orleans Saints (who could be resting players) standing out as possible wins.

The Bucs may have the worst record in the NFL right now, but that's unlikely to hold up. It's just incredibly hard to go winless in the NFL. Only two teams have managed to go winless in non-strike season in the modern era: the 1976 expansion Buccaneers and the 2008 Detroit Lions. Both of those teams lacked talent at every single position. The Bucs don't: they have Pro Bowlers and All-Pro players across their roster, and have too much talent to really go winless.

Still, any win by the Jaguars does increase the Bucs' odds of getting the first overall pick. That would be a positive regardless of how they get it. But I'm still going to root for the Buccaneers to win every game.
