NFLPA to investigate Freeman leak, files grievance against Buccaneers over Tynes

Win McNamee

The drama continues as the NFLPA is going to get involved, too.

DeMaurice Smith as executive director of the NFLPA is visiting every team this year, and visited the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today. Oh what great timing. Obviously, he had a few things to say on that whole leaking Freeman's medical information thing -- and he made it clear that the NFLPA will do everything it can to find whoever's responsible.

DeMaurice Smith's remarks, via the Tampa Bay Times:

I think we are sufficiently concerned about what we've heard to begin an investigation, I believe that the league has the same interests that we have in trying to determine what happened. I look forward to working with (NFL Commissioner) Roger (Goodell) and people from the league in order to conduct that investigation. But on behalf of our players, it's also important for all of our players and fans to know that our system works if people abide by the rules.

If we have a concern that the rules have been intentionally broken, no one is going to be exempt from the consequences.'

Hopefully, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not involved in any way. If any of the Bucs' employees do turn out to be the source of this leak, though, there should be some pretty harsh consequences.

DeMaurice Smith also announced that they had filed a grievance on behalf of Lawrence Tynes in the dispute over his status after suffering from MRSA. The Bucs placed him on the non-football injury list instead of injured reserve, which would cost him a portion of his retirement benefits. Tynes was not happy about that, to put it mildly, and the fact that a grievance would be filed was almost a foregone conclusion.

I'm impressed with the Bucs, though. They've managed to antagonize half the NFL by now. Who's next?
