Well we have already debated over Freeman and is he the guy or not. We have debated over the draft already. But we have let some other important things to debate about as well.. Mark Dominik and the coaching staff.
First lets talk about Mark Dominik and how he has done as the GM so far. I credit Cracker Ball for being one of the most critical and early critics of Dominik. I'm not even going to go into his failure to address his failure to upgrade the team in FA until this year. I never paid much attention to it at first and brushed it off at first. But also what made me think about it again was a convo I had with KRoa about the defensive personnel. Even when we had Morris it wasnt clear what type of defensive scheme we would have. But we clearly were supposed to get away from the traditional Tampa 2 defense we ran. But look our defensive guys. We had small undersized linebackers who were fast, no real rushers on the edge with real speed and small zone style CBs.
Look at this year. We have the same situation this year. We clearly upgraded at linebacker to stop the run especially. We have two run stopping DE's in Bennett and Clayborn and one speed edge rusher potentially in Bowers and McCoy, and we have an older small FS in Barber, Biggers who is a Tampa 2 CB, Eric Wright who is a smaller less physically man press man who has good ballhawk skills and can take it to the house if he gets a pick. And Mark Barron at SS.
We have been trying to address the d-line since 2009 and still havent gt the production we have hoped even when healthy. And the CB situation is horrible especially with the defense we want to use. We need tall physcial CBs that can play man press and have good speed and good ball hawk skills. Now this secondary could have been a little better if our coaches made some adjustments and not had them playing a scheme that they just cant run. Which is my next point......
Our coaches did a horrible job this year. They say Schiano did a good job establishing more discipline. Well how do we know this truly? Can that be measured? Because we were more competitive in our losses? We didnt "give up"? We didnt have any of the field issues? Really none of that matters unless we are winning. Are the Seattle Fans criticizing Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman? Hell no. Because they are winning. He did make it an emphasis on running the ball with his "bell cow" and stopping the run going from worst to 1st in run defense. Congrats. But we lost quite a few games when Schiano failed to make the proper adjustments. Whether its running stunts constantly or the ever so popular 3 man rush or the constant blitzing at the wrong times or the wrong type of blitzes like safety blitzes with Barber up the middle that doesnt work, or its using Martin constantly up the middle instead of more outside runs, or simple things like clock management. One game that he actually outcoached another and that was the Panthers and Rivera doesnt seem like a good coach to me. And we cant identify who is to blame on defense, whether its the position coaches or the coordinator or what but its bad. The only coach I feel did a hell of a job was our O-line coach. Going forward I doubt the coaches will make adjustments to their schemes offensively or defensively. Lets just hope we can get the right pieces in to see if it actually works.
Just some thing to think about. Tell me what you think.
