Todd McShay NFL Mock Draft 2013: Buccaneers get Damontre Moore

Brendan Maloney-US PRESSWIRE

Todd McShay seems like the more sensible draftnik between him and Mel Kiper, mostly because he doesn't keep mocking 4-3 linebackers to the Buccaneers. Instead, he thinks the Buccaneers will grab Damontre Moore, the defensive end out of Texas A&M, and that selection makes a lot more sense.

The Buccaneers have a humongous need at cornerback right now, but that need is likely to lessen once the free agency period has ended. More importantly, perhaps, quality defensive linemen are hard to find, and pass rush specialists are even more difficult to find. Which is where Damontre Moore comes in. With 8.5 sacks in 2011 and 12.5 sacks in 2012, he's had quality production. He'd be an intriguing option for the Bucs -- which is what McShay says.

The Bucs finished last in the NFC with just 27 sacks last season and have plenty of questions along the defensive line. Moore has the athleticism and competitiveness you look for in a pass-rusher, and also the frame to develop into a good every-down player. He comes with some character baggage and could slip out of the top 10, and would be a good find for Tampa Bay with this pick.

Moore does come with a few questions, though. He's good, but he's not elite. He's a solid run defender, but doesn't do much with his power moves. He's more of a speed rusher from a technique perspective, but is limited in that regard because he doesn't have a great first step. If the Bucs select a defensive end in the first round, they will want a difference maker as a pass rusher -- and I don't see how Moore is much better than Adrian Clayborn. The character issues don't concern me: those consist of one marijuana arrest.
