This post isnt intended to spark a controversy in who should be our starting RB. Doug Martin is a very talented back who is quick, shifty, and has good vision. He is after all a first round draft pick who has shown he can run the ball well and deserves to be a first round pick. With that being said, I believe if we were to get Blount more involved in the running game and have a (as cheesy as it sounds) 1-2 punch, we would be way more succesful. The duo that we all expected we'd have in the offseason. The combo that seemed to work so well when we had Dunn/Alstott and kept moving the chains constantly.
Its obvious that we want to be a run first team. Even though someone needs to explain to Sullivan that doesnt mean we have to run on first down for that to be so. Its also obvious that the coaching staff does not trust franchise quarterback Josh Freeman who is not allowed to throw the ball unless our tvs read 3rd down. We know were running on first and second and the opposing teams know the same thing which puts us in very tough third and long situations. Not to mention that since only one runningback is doing all the running its pretty tough for him to stay fresh and its also going to be hard for him not to end up like another overused runningback that we love and know as "Caddy". Hit the jump and ill prove my point on why we should give Blount more touches!
First off id like to mention that my source is pro football reference and that is where i got all my information from. Since joining us off the waiver wire in 2010, Blount has played in a combined total of 27 games with us (not counting todays). In those 27 games he has provided some pretty great runs, hurdles, and the famous run against the Packers last season which most people consider to be the best run by a RB. In those total 27 games LGB has a total of 1788 yards rushing on 385 attempts averaging 4.6 yards per carry. He has 11 rushing touchdowns since being with us and while some say he cant catch out of the backfield he has also proven he can do that in the very limited times hes been targeted. In 27 games played with us, Blount has broken runs over 16 yards 16 times and 8 times hes broken runs over 25 yards with his longest being 35,39,48,53,54 all in different games. He has also averaged 4.5 ypc a game in 14 out of those 27 games. He has only averaged less then 3 ypc in 4 games.
The bottom line is that Legarette Blount is a very talented back who has the capability to deliver a "homerun" anytime he touches the ball. Unfortunately he cannot do this if he does not get some carries. Everyone knows he takes a couple of carries to get going and is very hard to bring down once he does. Since our offence seems pathetic right now why are we not giving LGB his share of carries ?
