Ok, so I have been going through our roster just looking at all of our improvements this year. Two players that haven't been talked about very much at all or even acknowledged are Amobi Okoye and Rennie Curran. I'm going to go out on a limb and make a bold prediction that both of these guys are sleepers waiting to breakout.
The first round draft pick by the Texans in 2007, Okoye has 5 seasons under his belt and hes 25 years old (drafted at age 19 which makes him the youngest ever draftee). I think it was a great steal to grab this guy. He was let go by the Texans after 4 seasons and picked up by the bears the same day. He didn't see much action last season with Chicago though. In Sept 07' Okoye was named Defensive Rookie of the Month after leading the AFC with four sacks. He is the youngest player ever to receive the award. He has a good frame for defensive tackle, measuring in at 6' 2" 295 lbs. He has racked in 165 tackles, 15 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. While his career stats aren't anything incredible, it's this reason why I think he has been needing a team that will use his full potential and give him decent play time. I believe he can be a great contribution to the team and I truly hope he puts up some good numbers this season and in return gets a long term contract.
Now on to Rennie, Curran was considered one of the top weak-side linebackers of his class and has been called "the most dominant defensive player in the game" by The Sporting News. He was a third round pick by the Titans but has seen little play time. His only career stats are 7 tackles and that's it. It's actually pretty hard to find any info on this guy anywhere on the internet. The mystery surrounding this guy is what makes me think he is also a sleeper. He has numerous college and high school awards but only time will tell if his skills will transfer to the NFL. Word on the street is that the Titans decided the undersized Curran was not a good fit for their defense under the new coach Mike Munchak, so they cut him. I also believe that the lockout had something to do with the whole situation surrounding him and maybe Tennessee didn't get a chance to see how good he was? Lastly, it was reported that he was running with first team during OTA's but idk if that really means much or not.
I hope in the coming month at training camp we hear more about these guys and hopefully they are keepers. Let's get some discussion going about these guys. I want to know what y'all think and maybe someone knows something else about these guys. I haven't watched any game footage of these guys, but id imagine there probably isn't too much out there anyways. If these guys pan out to be good, this would probably be the best off season ever! Minus the Bowers injury which still bums me out.
