*Poll* Is the NFL hurting the entertainment value of the game?
I'm writing a class research paper and part of my topic is that the NFL is ruining much of the entertainment value of pro football and it's main appeal, the violence of the sport. The NFL is a violent game and the league is trying to minimize that but they are also trying to protect the players we love to watch. What is your take on this issue? Please answer the poll question below
Note - I do not plan on using any of your quotes , if for some reason I did you will remain anonymous unless requested. Thank you

I think the entertainment level is still there,
but I think it is hurting its ego and credibility. Even with the ridiculous rules, I don’t believe it is losing any fans.

I'm one of the guys who loved seeing the big Sean Taylor/Brian Dawkins/John Lynch hits, but the truth of the matter is that the NFL is still the most watched sport with out those hits.
It is only gaining popularity. Just as the players are adjusting to the new rules, the fans will have to as well. I’m sure when we added face masks to football, a lot of people thought that the league was being over protective of the players. As we get older, we get more knowledgable. To not try and fix the concussion problem even though you know there is a concussion problem is just plain dumb.

Short Term Maybe....
Big hits are an exciting part of the game, eventually a “common understanding” of what does and does not constitute a penalty on the QB hits will have to be established because right now its hit and miss.
Still what the NFL CANNOT allow itself to become is too violent of a sport that falls outside the venue of what main stream americans can tolerate. Ben’s post about face masks is a great point, another point for your research is the invention of the forward pass. It came about because football was being threatened with a ban by Teddy Roosevelt.
The modern NFL game is probably safer now...
that it has ever been. Improved protective equipment, medical diagnosis abilities and treatment, and just general awareness to the permanent consequences to injuries is at a level never even considered previously.
That being said, they are in danger of over-regulating to the point that the game changes in a negative way. Some of these hits, not to the head, are being flagged because they are just hard hits – which is an inherent part of the game. If you don’t want to take the chance being injured, then go play chess or something. Good luck marketing that NFL.

I don't like some of the rules, but the NFL is just being careful and safe with the players health.
Players these days are much. much bigger, stronger, and faster than they used to be, and the NFL is currently being sued by older players for their injuries.
I don’t care for penalties such as just touching a QB’s helmet or another players face mask, but at the same time, some of these hits that are made would probably kill the average Joe.

The entertainment value of football isnt strickly the ‘violence’. I LOVE FOOTBALL. The strategy and the mental game moreso than the fact that someone MAY OR MAYNOT get hurt on the field.. injuries are part of every sport and the fact that some now have to think about the way they throw themselves at other players doesnt affect the game all that much.. do i wish they left the rules alone? perhaps.. but violence is most certainly no the reason everyone ‘LIKES’ football….. dont say that in your report dude. (all of the sudden, mothers who hear about that will start pulling their sons off the team)
Entertain
in 2010 it seemed like every game I watched stopped to have someone carted off. That wasn’t entertaining.
It is only a matter of time until someone is killed on the field. That won’t be entertaining and will cause all kinds of problems.
You can still have big hits without going helmet to helmet.
