Reggie Wayne?

With all the free agent WR that will be available, not many people have mentioned Reggie Wayne. I agree that he may not be the sexiest pick of the bunch, however he could be one of the better signings. He is an aging star at 33 years old, however, with no Peyton Manning he still had 75 catches, 960 yards, 12.8 yards a catch, and 4 touchdowns. That is with Curtis Painter throwing him the ball for the majority of the season, lets just say Painter does not belong an NFL roster, that is how bad he is. Reggie Wayne would be an excellent pick up for us. He may have interest in us because he went to college in Miami, and was coached by Butch Davis and Greg Schiano. He would be our number one WR, and could teach Mike Williams and Arrelius Benn a little bit about the art of the game. He would also be cheaper than a Vincent Jackson or Dwayne Bowe, and to be honest, is better than either one of them. His contract would not be that huge seeing that he is 33 years old, he would probably only get a 2-3 year deal.

Ehh

Depends on the asking price, I would prefer a more serviceable WR to spread the field for years to come.

On a team with zero veteran leadership

I think he would give us that. A two or three year deal wont hurt us, asking price wont hurt us and will give the bucs more money to spend on other postitions of need. Not to mention no one could get separation last season. Wayne can still get separation. Although we would still need a speed WR (which could be answered in the draft) I would not be made at having Reggie Wayne in a Buccaneer uniform.

by gusjackson on Feb 13, 2012 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

what would you rather have

an over rated Vincent Jackson at 10 million a year for the next 5 seasons or Reggie Wayne for 7 million a year for the next 2. Vincent Jackson has never had double digit TD, never had more than 68 catches, and has had 3 1,000 yard seasons, yet he is made out to be such a great receiver. Yes he is explosive and can stretch the field but he is extremely inconsistent.

by NutterBuccer on Feb 10, 2012 1:57 PM EST reply actions

He will help

however I think he and Bowe are going to be extremely expensive to get, and receivers often times tend to bust once they trade teams and get paid big money.

by NutterBuccer on Feb 10, 2012 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

I'd much prefer the "overrated" Vincent Jackson...

over Reggie Wayne. If we were, say… HOU, I would take Reggie Wayne. They have all of their pieces in place except a good #2 WR and a CB. They could sign Wayne for 2 years and get to a Superbowl. We are too far away now, and Vincent Jackson can make us competitive while we collect the other pieces we need. 3 years from now, we could be something…

by Cracker Ball on Feb 10, 2012 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

I think

His age would be a detractor, but if we can get a veteran on the cheap who has worked with a great furture HOF to show them how to get open and on the cheap great. Otherwise no. And personally I think we are much closer to being in playoff contention than most people think, our offense needs a dep threat WR and a speedy RB, we can get by with our OL but a couple upgrades would help. Our defense within the next 2 years will be stout again. Unless ofcourse we spend big in FA this year, and there is plenty of talent flying around this FA year in terms of defense.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 11, 2012 8:44 AM EST up reply actions

I'd rather have Vincent Jackson

Easily. Jackson is a receiver who can hit the deep ball and has a wide catching radius. Wayne is more of a possession receiver now.

by Sander on Feb 10, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

That is true

I am not saying I don’t like Jackson, I think he is a tremendous talent and Freeman would definitely be able to air it out to him. However, do you think he is worth the money he will get, I am pretty sure he wants top dollar money which would be at least 10 million a year.

by NutterBuccer on Feb 10, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Probably not, especially considering his age

At the same time, it’s not like the Bucs have to be mindful of the salary cap right now.

by Sander on Feb 10, 2012 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

The Bucs do have a lot of money

Would just hate to see them get themselves in the same predicament they were in 4-5 years ago.

by NutterBuccer on Feb 10, 2012 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Wayne would just add to our already lack of explosion….We have to give Freeman a deep threat whats the point of having a QB with a big arm if we have no players who can go get the ball 40 yards down field…and V-Jax is a rare talent 6’5 with speed….He can be a factor in the open field as well as the red zone…

by DrummaBoi561 on Feb 10, 2012 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

Problem is SD papers are reporting

That V-Jax will get tagged if they cant come to an agreement, and personally I dont blame them. We have a better chance to get Desean Jackson.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 10, 2012 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

V-Jax?

If thats the case then it has to do with money and We have a lot of needs to address in FA to spend a boat load on 1 guy. Or is it that he is a cap casualty? I am not to sure where SD is with respect to the cap.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 10, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks Sander

Interesting, that makes the pot sweeter thats for sure. He would be awesome to have. I had him as the “dream” WR pick but had read he was getting the tag this year, nice to see he may hit the market. Hope he does and that we take a serious look at him. He’s a big boy too, would be great in redzone situations as well.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 10, 2012 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Dont put

anything past this organization, we did trade Keyshawn for Joey Galloway

by Gobucsgo on Feb 10, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

That was a different organization for all intents and purposes.

Bruce Allen and Gruden were calling the shots at that time.

Am I going MAD, or did the word "think" escape your lips?

by Kilgore on Feb 11, 2012 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

Personally

I would want Stevie Johnson out of everyone. He has had two back to back seasons of 1000 plus yards, is one of the younger free agent WR out there, and is supposedly seeking 7 million a year. He is not as much of a deep threat as Jackson or Colston but he does have speed and can stretch the field.

by NutterBuccer on Feb 10, 2012 2:20 PM EST reply actions

Hmmm

Stevie Johnson would be nice, the guy is pretty consistent and will strectch the field more than who we already have on roster.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 10, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

This

Stevie Johnson would rock the mic.

by Kilgore on Feb 11, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

Mike Sullivan

As Sander reported, Mike Sullivan is getting a look at for the offensive coordinator position, and he runs a run and gun offense. That would make more of a case for V-Jax.

by NutterBuccer on Feb 10, 2012 4:46 PM EST reply actions

Wayne

Not a bad signing at all if the price is right. He still has the skills and can probably help the young receivers we have. Jackson will be to expensive. Stevie Johnson would be great too. However, we all have to remember that the players would want to come to Tampa which sometimes is hard to do as we have seen in the past.

with

Painter throwing the ball to him! The guy is stilll relevant and capable. The key with him is he is a great route runner and knows how to get open. That would be great for our young receiver corps.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 11, 2012 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

Dont think

He would even consider coming here given that he is almost done with the NFL, plus I think if Wayne and Manning were smart they would try to go to SF together and get another ring.

SF-why?

If I were Manning...

I would talk to Wayne and both sign in SEA. They will likely franchise Marshawn Lynch and have been collecting OL players for the last couple of seasons.

by Cracker Ball on Feb 10, 2012 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

Thats an option few people are talking about

They have a good defense, hell half the NFC team were seahawks. They are primed for a good run, throw in manning and wayne they could be in contention right away.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 11, 2012 8:48 AM EST up reply actions

Because

Sf is a qb away from getting to the SB and wayne would be huge for that offense considering you cant double wayne and davis.

by GMAN-23- on Feb 10, 2012 9:59 PM EST reply actions

Their QB isn't the reason they lost this year, they need a recieving corps of more than just Wayne.

while their TE really stepped up, they need help at WR like we do.

please

are you really trying to tell me that adding Wayne wouldn’t make crabtree look great, plus its not like the cant sign any other WR after they get Wayne, and they already have 2 deep threats in ginn and davis.

by GMAN-23- on Feb 11, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Your forgetting

that SF is playing in what was a weak division, arizona, seattle and soon st louis will be much stronger than they were. Previous pushover with a few years good drafts equals, competition that SF didnt really face this past year in their division.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 11, 2012 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

gotta go with stevie johnson as this one.

v jax would be costly, and stevie is as talented. and reasonable as well.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 11, 2012 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

exactly, consistency is a very needed quility on this team right now.

and having watched stevie up here in western NY, he isn’t asking much from the bills, and is more of a team player than people think.

non factor?

were you watching games he actually played in?

by Gobucsgo on Feb 11, 2012 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

VJ is really talented but really inconsistent...

He’l have a game with like 120 receiving yards and 2-3tds one week but then he’l have his occasional clunker. If I had to pick my receiver wish list would probably go..

1. Bowe
2. V.J.
3. Stevie
4. DeSean

Good luck Rah. Bring us Mo Claiborne and replace Geno, Quincy, and Sean Jones!

by freeman05 on Feb 11, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

If we get just one of them I'll be happy.

I’d rather see:

1. Motivated and out for blood DeSean
2. Stevie
3. VJ
4. Bowe
5. Cry baby, whining all day DeSean

Am I going MAD, or did the word "think" escape your lips?

by Kilgore on Feb 11, 2012 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

I think Desean would make the biggest positive impact.

If we pay him, he will produce. I think all the negative talk surrounding him will put a chip on his shoulder.

by flash_kiley on Feb 12, 2012 10:46 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

He is fast, but he is also agile.

He can catch a deep bomb, or take a 5 yard out route 70 yards. No, he isn’t gonna out jump a lot if people, but normally they aren’t close enough for him to have to out jump them for it.

by flash_kiley on Feb 12, 2012 7:05 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

I think DeSean is a head-case...

a la TO and will pout and be disruptive if things do not go his way (kinda like Keyshawn) and is a very selfish player. Does not seem like the guy that fits the Schiano mold.

by plowboy30 on Feb 12, 2012 3:17 PM EST reply actions

Was

sorry new at this but the only reciever that done anything was Parker

by plowboy30 on Feb 12, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Sure, I agree with that

But Ward was astoundingly terrible this season. He caught 46 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns. That’s an average of 8.3 yards per catch. He’ll be 36 this season. He’s done.

by Sander on Feb 12, 2012 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Winslow Jr

I agree but Winslow was washed up also he ended up being Freemans go to and Williams just ended up with 3 touchdowns this year

by plowboy30 on Feb 12, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Didn't say it would

I just think he needs a quality reciever from free agency and Claiborne would be the best 1st pick the defense sucked and Barber may retire. I think David Wilson from VT is a better 3rd down back then Richardson and he will probably be there in the second rd

by plowboy30 on Feb 12, 2012 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Don't Ignore Character Concerns

I’m seeing alot of talk about all the WR’s who are available…..please be careful before drooling over DeSean Jackson, Stevie Johnson, or Dwayne Bowe…all three come with LARGE red flags.

Johnson basically was the key factor in three Buffalo losses this past season, his post TD unsportsmanlike conduct penalties are ridiculous, and let several teams back into games this year. He’s not a bad guy(no off-field issues) but going into a contract year, how do you make and continue to make stupid penalties that cause huge problems.

DeSean Jackson is basically a THUG more talented than Johnson but is a huge negative in the locker room and for every big play your going to pay with off-field and on-field distractions.

Dwayne Bowe has been suspended multiple times and has been criticized for locker room issues as well.

All are very talented, but so are alot of #1 WR’s whose teams they could never elevate to another level. I’m not saying 100% don’t take any of them, but really your getting a good deal of baggage on a young team that had no locker room leadership last season, when it comes to winning Character Counts!

by DraftPhantom on Feb 13, 2012 1:43 AM EST reply actions

Hold on....

Desean Jackson did act like a child over a contract dispute but can you blame the guy? They brought in people who hadn’t paid their dues on the Eagles and were making more than double he was making and they let him ride out his final year?? Your deep threat receiver which is a big reason the offense has time to work isnt getting signed but a OL gets signed for almost double?? I would be LIVID as well. The guy deserves his payday, sure he went about it all wrong but he refocused and still had a good year despite all the “distractions” He would be a good fit here if we pay him. To be quite honest I could easily see him in Tampa. Stevie Johnson has made some down right stupid endzone antics but heres the thing about that, HE GOT IN THE ENDZONE. We could sure use some more of that!!! I will take a 15 yard penalty after every 80+ yard TD over countless 3 and outs ANY DAY! I’m not versed on the Bowe situation so Jury is still out on him. But any of these guys would help our offense tremendously.

by Gobucsgo on Feb 13, 2012 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

The players want these monster contracts...

and Stanford Routt is a good example of what happens if you don’t play like the player you think you are. He was kind of a victim of his own demands.

I prefer the old days when you signed a contract and you played it out. If you don’t like it to begin with – don’t sign it. Selfish players and the “me first” attitude is rampant now and it actually ends up hurting the player long-term. Don’t like the lack of integrity either.

Take Eric Dickerson – was possibly the greatest RB ever and was well on his way to shattering many NFL records. He played for a team (LA Rams) that designed their offense completely around him. He read all the newspaper clippings, got full of himself, and then wanted his contract renegotiated. The Rams sent him packing to INDY and he basically ruined his own career with that move. Looking back, I suppose he deserved it.

by Cracker Ball on Feb 13, 2012 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

yea but look at the overall view. players get bad reps for wanting more money. it seems like they always give money to the guys you least expect to get it but the ones who do deserve it have to fight so hard to do so.

but yet if that person is cut nobody cares. NFL is a business and it works both ways. Example Victor Cruz. If I were him i would sit out and demand a raise and renegotiate that rookie contract he is on now. he is going to get less than 500,000 next year. He has outplayed that contract in one year alone. Im not saying give him a long term deal yet though. I dont blame Jackson for doing what he did it was just how he did it.
