Eric Wright returns to Buccaneers, may not play

Jeff Griffith-US PRESSWIRE

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers see Eric Wright return to the team after a four-game suspension.

Too little, too late. That's the best way to describe Eric Wright's return to the team. Like Aqib Talib, Wright was suspended four games for violating the league's performance enhancing drugs policy. Wright claimed he took Adderall for medical purposes, but that he didn't get a waiver from the league. Given the fact that the league refuses to comment on these matters, it's impossible to say for sure.

The fact that Wright is back with the team does not mean he will play on Sunday in the final (meaningless) game of the season. Greg Schiano said that they would watch him in practice to see if he can play on Sunday. If he isn't in football shape and can't play on Sunday, that would likely be the nail in the coffin for Wright's tenure with the Bucs.

That is, if they haven't made up their mind on him yet. The suspension voided the guarantees in Wright's contract and would allow the Bucs to cut ties with him at no penalty. Whether they will do so remains to be seen, and it may not be wise: Wright is by far the best cornerback on the team, and the Bucs can use all the help in the secondary they can get. Still, at nearly $8 million in salary he may simply be too expensive for the value he brings. At a minimum, I would expect Mark Dominik to attempt to renegotiate the contract. And if they have soured on Wright, we could have seen his last play in Tampa already.
