Well call me crazy for having us actually doing something this year. Its real depressing to be a Bucs fan right now. Im sure all the other out of town Bucs fans feel my pain. If I lived in the Florida area i wouldnt feel so bad. But I have to here everyday about how everybody's excited about the damn Redskins and Ravens making the playoffs. Let me vent for a second. Its mighty strange that besides the Browns, we are the only team from the original top 5 in the draft that wont have a winning record and that will miss the playoffs. Something aint right. And dont tell me its just that we are lacking talent and we need to wait for Josh Freeman to develop into the new offensive system. That's a bunch of malarkey.
Let me get on my soapbox for a second. First of all I have been critical of Freeman since the beginning of last year. So im not just hoping on the"Freeman hater train". And I dont hate Freeman i just dont think hes the" GUY" that can take us over the hump into the playoffs and beyond like we all hope and wish. He looks very good on paper. Has all the physical tools and has the clutch gene in him to pull it out at the last minute. But even in his 2010 magical season he was consistently inconsistent. Always starting off slow and then turning it up in the last quarter. Never and real consistency throughout a whole game. Its either he's really hot or he is really cold. His season looks very good on paper but if you look closely its still up and down.
And even with this year he is still inconsistent. He still has way too many overthrows, he still misses wide open guys, still fails at going through his progressions consistently, and still stares down a receiver way too much and of course he is still inaccurate. I have not seen any improvement from last year or the years before in his play. They have only allowed him to do more of the things he is capable of doing which is throwing the deep ball. This would be fine if their plan is to know Freeman's strengths and work around them and maximize them to their fullest instead of trying to transform him to something that they want but he will never be. Everybody loves to compare Freeman with Eli. He is not Eli Manning in no way shape of fashion. Just because they are in the same "system" doesnt mean Freeman will excel in it. Lets stop expecting Freeman to develop in year 4 into the super bowl QB some keep thinking he will be. Manning has always been a accurate QB pocket passer and Josh isn't. Again your trying to change somebody into an Eli clone and he doesnt even have the same skillset as Eli. Its not going to work. Instead of letting Freeman who is still an athletic QB and big scramble and move around in the pocket and make plays with his feet or taking of SOMETIMES (not always) when nothing is open, you insist that he stays in the pocket 95% of the time and thats not his strength. I have always said he has the Big Ben skillset and should be used like him. But what do i know? SMH. And of course every QB will have their moment when they stink and some will even have a few moments like Freeman did but if you win people will forget about it and you move on. So im not going to blame it all on Freeman.
This where blame goes on Dominik and the coaching staff. Credit to Dom finally bringing in some FA talent. But he has dropped the ball on the coaching staff for quite a while. Just like the Raheem Morris era it looked good for a second but didnt work out as planned (Even though i didnt agree with his firing but thats another argument for another day). I was shaky on Schiano and held judgement. I like the idea of him leading men and motivating guys etc... but his coaching is very questionable. His defense is amazing at stopping the run which i love and am glad improved especially after last year. But they dont make adjustments very well and are very stubborn in changing their gameplan no matter what. Whether its the ineffective blitzes at the wrong times like the Giants game or Redskins game or the 3 man rushes or the stunts that do not work they tend to get outcoached quite often. Whether its clock management like in the end of the Dallas game, or failure to exploit the weakness of the other teams defense like the Dallas game or the Redskins game. The coaching has failed. Have they changed the culture or at least put up a good effort to do so? Somewhat. But the culture wont fully change unless we win. And if this keeps up players will quit on you no matter how hard you push them. If you cant bring it as a coach then the players will get frustrated. You will have more players speaking "anomalously" on how things should improve as far as coaching. or guys like Dallas Clark complain about their lack of use in the offense, or like Mccoy having to beg every week to cut the stunts out and let them go straight ahead at the QB. Or like Bennett saying that he knew the play the coach called wouldnt work before it even happened. And from what i am hearing and what i have seen thus far Schiano wont change his ways. So i dont know how long he will last here. But somebody will unfortunately be fired this year. We need some better coaching on the team. Maybe get rid of Dom? I dont know but something must change. I'm tired of consistently having a top draft pick. Shit we cant even "win" in the draft. Im tired of missing the playoffs. But i digress for now.
Let me know what yall think.
