No Childress please

but a lot of buzz around Sherman these days.

As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.

I just don't get why he's getting so much buzz

If we’re going the ex-HC route I’d rather have Billick or Schottenheimer. I’d take Billick over Marty only because I can spell his name.

Can't believe the Texans would grant an interview request right before their divisional playoff game

That doesn’t ring true to me. As far as I know, there are some rules set up to prevent this sort of thing, but if the team gives permission it’s okay. Otherwise, I thought teams could only interview assistant coaches during wild card week, and even then, only teams that had a first round bye that week.

They can only speak in the week after the wild card weekend or in the week before the Super Bowl for teams playing wild card games

For playoff teams with a bye, they can only speak to coordinators in the wild card week (which would be last week). I’m not sure whether teams can actually deny an interview request in these cases, though they do have say over when and where those interviews will take place. Regardless, teams generally don’t deny opportunities for head coaching interviews.

The Texans have already granted the interview request, so it’s a moot point anyway.

by Sander on Jan 9, 2012 8:58 AM EST up reply actions

I can't believe they decided to allow that

although by visiting the Texans blog, I found out that he has Friday off, so he isn’t missing practice of anything. I think it is a huge distraction to be interviewing for other jobs when you are in the playoffs. The team that signs your paychecks deserves full focus. I would be pissed if I were a Texans fan.

That said, I highly doubt they go with Phillips anyway. We have talked over and over again about how this team would need quite an overhaul to transition to a 3-4.

Phillips doesn't run the Steelers, Ravens, 49ers 3-4.

It’s more penetration from the line than block holding. Shaun Cody is the noseguard at 305 pounds, if that helps. Like Sander has been saying, it’s basically a 4-3 with one end standing up. Most likely would be Clayborn, and I like Clayborn with a running start against tackles.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 9:37 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

It's not like the defense is great by any means

and if ever there was a time to blow it up then it would be now. The linebackers and secondary need to be overhauled. I just don’t think we should take the one positive of our team (the defensive line when healthy) and manipulate it when so many other aspects of the defense need attention.

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

We still could.

Phillips used the same roster and changed the scheme. We still need a corner or two, and a linebacker or two. And a safety.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 9:47 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

And unless you think Miller can play the other end spot

probably an end too. And McCoy and Price would obviously have to stay healthy as well. Would be smart to get some depth there as they both have history of injury.

We’re talking about a lot of free agent acquisitions and defensive draft picks. Not sure that Dominik would be on board with that, but who knows.

Who would play the other end opposite Price?

"Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example." ~ Mark Twain

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Price would play noseguard probably

McCoy would play end, and either Clayborn/Bowers the other end, whichever doesn’t get moved to OLB.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 10:13 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

You have a 1-tech, 3-tech, 5-tech, 7-tech

Bucs play that right now with McCoy, Price, Bennett/Bowers, Clayborn respectively. Could switch around Clayborn & Bennett/Bowers depending on weak side.

On passing downs the Phillips 3-4 goes into a 4-2-5 anyway.

by Sander on Jan 9, 2012 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

What 3-4 LBs are available in free agency?

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

Dan Connor, Curtis Lofton, and EJ Henderson could also play inside with Foster.

Anthony Spencer could play outside. And I would like to see how Dakota Watson would play in a 3-4 scheme.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 10:25 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

Bucs need to replace one or two linebackers anyway

In terms of skillset they’re no worse off in a 4-3 than they are in a Phillips 3-4.

Foster could easily play inside. Shouldn’t be an issue.

by Sander on Jan 9, 2012 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

Right

but I’m saying are the linebackers in free agency more suited for Phillips system or a standard 4-3 or do you think it doesn’t make a difference at all? Any 4-3 LB can play in Phillips system with no drop off in production?

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

So, you're thinking that Phillips will take over head coaching and defensive coordinating?

I would think they would have learned their lesson with that. Otherwise, Phillips would have to hire a DC that agreed to run the exact system he wanted. How many guys out there would be willing to do that? Are any other teams running that defense right now?

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

He did an okay job calling the defense while at Dallas.

It’s enhanced with how Dallas’ defense played this year. A lot of Phillips’ problems was the high profile job that being the head coach of the Cowboys is. Tampa a lot more tame team.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 10:42 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

All the same things that were said about Morris were said about Phillips

Too friendly with players etc. I really hope we don’t hire him.

I don't think Phillips will win the head coaching job

But if he does, I don’t see how he would do anything but implement his system.

He had defensive coordinators before 2009, too. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t have a good network of former assistants to choose from.

by Sander on Jan 9, 2012 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

Yuck.

"Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example." ~ Mark Twain

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

I know

Doesn’t mean that Bowers or Clayborn would be successful as LBs or that McCoy could play the nose. Price and maybe Miller could play the ends, but we would need Foster to really step it up, land a veteran 3-4 backer in free agency, and draft someone fairly high to add depth to that linebacking corp. All that and hoping Clayborn, Bennett, and Bowers can make the transition seamlessly.

It’s a lot to ask. We definitely don’t have the talent like Houston does. Lots and lots of high draft picks comprise that defense. Our transition to Phillips’ 3-4 would be much uglier I think.

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

Dang you type fast. :)

And a lot of high draft picks make up our defense. I understand the transition could be hard, but the risk could be worth it. The Texans defense, with all that talent, was historically bad last year. This year they were arguably the best, even after their best defender got hurt. I would like to see what good coaching could do to this defense, regardless of scheme.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 9:43 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

Word.

I think the main difference between them and us is that they already had an outstanding linebacking corp. Two first round draft picks and three second round picks or something like that. Ridiculous talent was already there. Our LBs. Not so much. Although I agree that Clayborn could probably succeed.

"Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example." ~ Mark Twain

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

Haha yeah our linebackers our bad.

Foster may play well at 3-4 ILB, and Clayborn would play OLB. So we need another ILB and OLB, which is still what we need if we stay at 4-3.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 9:50 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

And I realize that Phillips' version of 3-4 is different

but I think if we shift all those defensive line picks around it could be ugly. What a waste of the last three drafts.

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

Not really.

The line is still focusing on getting to the quarterback, just from a different look.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 9:39 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

Our line focused on getting to the QB?

Because they weren’t successful in the system they were drafted for. Not really sure how you think they would be more successful in a scheme they aren’t ideally suited for and have never played in.

Why not give the Broncos OC an interview?

I really like how quickly he molded the playbook to fit Tebow. And I like his playcalling.

Throw the ball ten yards and hope the receiver takes it to the house?

I’m kidding, kinda.

by LeeCaz on Jan 9, 2012 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

That is the playbook for Tebow, yes. :)

But I don’t see us running the spread option, either. I was meaning that he did a good job of adapting his offense to match his players, instead of trying to force his players to match his offense(which never works). He got Tebow to pass for more yards than any other quarterback had against Pittsburgh this year. He could do wonders with Freeman.

by flash_kiley on Jan 9, 2012 9:31 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

Schottenheimer might make a lot of sense for us

I agree, however, that I’d only want to see Childress here as an OC.

With the 5th pick of the 2012 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select....

I'm really worried and scared about who they will bring in.

I’m not generally worried about having a retread, but there are certain retreads I would like to see come in and certain retreads I never want to see here. I think the lack of interviews or even mention of some college coaches bothers me too. Chip Kelly deserves a look, so does Brian Billick. But then again, how do we know they haven’t spoken to those guys? We don’t know, but I will worry until I know who the new boss is.

Where the heck is Keyser?

by bucnut1 on Jan 9, 2012 10:17 AM EST reply actions

brian billick deserves an extensive look. find out if he wants to coach, if he does open up the checkbook

man, the more i think of it Dom deserves more or the same amount of blame that Morris does

by Carlitin1988 on Jan 9, 2012 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, Dom should have been let go.

It seems like he has had more to do with the lack of spending and bringing in the cheap players than anybody.

Dom dodged a bullet for sure...

but it may only buy him 1 more year. I think he sucks.
