NFL Playoffs Open Thread: Giants at Falcons

Two flawed teams face off in a few minutes. The Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants will do battle in the Wild Card round of the 2012 NFL Playoffs. Can Matt Ryan and company win their first playoff game, or will the New York Giants take the first step toward repeating their 2007 performance?

My money's on the New York Giants to face the Green Bay Packers next week.

Talk about the game, the playoffs, the Bucs, the draft, coaching searches and whatever else here.

If I were an outside observer I would say the G-Men.

They have more punchable faces. Eli Manning? Tom Coughlin? But I hate the Falcons just a bit more being a Buc fan.

Disagree, Mike Smith has a very punchable face.

Manning pulled a Bret Favre there.

Love when that happens. Even though it only netted them, well negative one yard.

I hate the Falcons!

Genuinely. They get all this hype, and have no heart.

They were overrated coming into this season

I honestly think the Bucs were better talent wise it showed in the 1st game against them when we actually looked like an NFL team then.

hey Sander

what is up with the O coordinator for the Giants, the Giants have had an above average effective offense for a long time.

Any word on his credentials and availability?

Kevin Gilbride

Love his offenses. I’ve heard his name maybe once. Was a Chargers head coach from ‘97-’98 and didn’t have a lot of success (then again, Ryan Leaf was drafted in ‘98). At 60 he’s pretty old, too. I’d be intrigued, but don’t think the’s a real candidate.

He is good probably the only reason the Falcons are playing today despite average talent in most areas.

Consider how much pressure he had to win over the Vick lovers down there he handled it well. For Falcons standards historically he is the best qb they had, never had back to back winning season til he came there let alone 3 playoff appearence in 4 yrs.

by Brian Ahmed on Jan 8, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Third overall?

I think you want a star quarterback with that draft position, and he’s not that. But he’s an above-average quarterback and a lot of teams would give up more than a third overall pick for one.

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I did

And I’ll continue saying it. I’m still underwhelmed with him. And he hasn’t exactly changed their offense, either. Looks exactly like it looked last year.

by Sander on Jan 8, 2012 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

he's made some huge plays for them...

…whether they are better as an offensive hole or not should point at the regression of someone other than Julio. You and I hardly agree on any football related subject..so it doesn’t surprise me. How is Holland today? nice this time of year?

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

Cold

Julio Jones has made some plays, but the principle of the offense is exactly the same: run, run, pass. They can’t lean on the pass and that’s holding them back. Julio is not a game-breaking WR.

And they gave up a ton for him, while they have a run-first offense and still have significant holes. I don’t get it.

by Sander on Jan 8, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

hahaa!

Julio is not a game-breaking WR.

ok dude….ok….lol. How’s the weed over there in Holland…pretty good?

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Julio Jones has had big games

That doesn’t mean he broke open those games. I don’t think there are many games they don’t win if he doesn’t play.

He’s a good player. He’s not a game-breaking player. He’s not, say, A.J. Green.

by Sander on Jan 8, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

You damn right he aint AJ Green...

Julio is better. Bigger, faster, stronger… They’re goth great though.

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Julio has better measurables

But he’s nowhere near the football player A.J. Green is. Not even close.

by Sander on Jan 8, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree completely

….I am not trying to compare two young WRs in their first year, but if you are hell bent on going down that road…Julio is better…and has proven it.

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I will always go in circles with you...

where did you play football? What is your background in football?

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

But if you want to go that route

The Bengals certainly thought A.J. Green was the beter player. So does Greg Cosell. In fact, so does every football analyst I’ve heard comment on either receiver this season.

by Sander on Jan 8, 2012 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I am not going any route..

…there are many football minds of people who played/coached (not watch and write about it) that will tell you Julio is a game breaker. Somethings you have to DO to know about. I could read all the books about Holland I could gather, but until I actually visit/live there…I really don’t know. :)

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not disputing that there are people who believe that

I don’t agree with it, and I don’t think it’s been “proven”, and I know your opinion is not a consensus opinion among football experts, coaches, and players either.

by Sander on Jan 8, 2012 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

I think he wanted you to ask him what his background in football was.

But he’ll probably tell you even if you don’t ask. I’ll give you a hint. He went to the same school as Julio Jones.

by Landlubber on Jan 8, 2012 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

not at all...just like to know where certain

opinions arise…and how they got to that conclusion. I respect everyone’s opinion.

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

A.J. Green is the #1 receiver on his team

He consistently wins down the field. He consistently makes really tough catches in coverage. He plays faster than Julio Jones (i know Jones ran a faster 40, Green plays faster). He’s a better route runner. And he does all that with a worse QB.

Julio Jones is better with the ball in his hands. That’s it, if you ask me.

by Sander on Jan 8, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

It's all good.

I just think it’s a logical fallacy to say someone’s opinion on football is only valid if they played the sport.

Especially since lots of people who played/coached football disagree with your opinion.

by Landlubber on Jan 8, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

haha...its like the old saying...

“…opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one” I am sure you could ask anyone about the comparison between Julio and AJ and get different opinions split down the middle. Personally, I wasn’t trying to compare them, they are both great.

…but it wouldn’t surprise me coming from this blog. We’ll see. He’s a rook. Personally, he will be a perennial pro bowler and a top NFL WR for a long time. Hard worker, smart, freak physical tools. 10 years from now…we’ll see.

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Randy Moss was a gamebreaking rookie WR

by GoBuxGo on Jan 8, 2012 2:56 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

I've always wondered why the Pats don't make those kind of trades.

Some of those years the built up all these draft picks in trades, then traded back, then wound up cutting all the people they did draft. I would think a Julio Jones would be a pretty good addition to their team. Not to meantion a whole list of players they could’ve got on Defense over the years.

What playmakers they have on defense besides Abraham. For an offense that has Ryan, Turner, Roddy, Julio, Gonzo they sure can look stagnent some games unless they play bad teams.

The Giants pass rush is too potent

For the Falcons. I’ve counted 1 blitz since the half started so now with this lead the best chances the Falcons have at winning this is an offensive/defensive collapse by NY. Max Protect and don’t get beat deep. Go Blue!

I dont think anyone is angry, but there are those who see a few nationally televised games or Youtube clips

and think that hes the only RB in the universe. Focusing on the hot name or known commodity instead of the team is shortsighted.

As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.

by Buc Wild on Jan 8, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

well, thinking the Bucs RB is a position of strength

is short sighted as well, if we’re going there. But I think most rational people will tell you the Bucs need secondary and linebacker help more than other positions. BTW, personally, I saw TR play twice last year…not TV. …and yes, he is (in my opinion) the best RB to come into the NFL in quite some time. TR > Jim Brown :)

by Buc Wild on Jan 8, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

I have a feeling we'll be using this bullet point all off season long

One player (i.e. Julio Jones) was not the solution. They took an incremental upgrade over a large upgrade. THey had other holes to fill (not as big as what we have) but chose the one player approach. You have to look at the overall TEAM, not one player.

As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.

An "explosive" offense built on the run game with an aging back.

THey thought offense was their problem. Unless you think you can outscore the top 4 teams (not likely), you are better off maintaining a top 12 offense and strengthening your defense. Slow them down and grind it out ala 07 Giants, dont try to outscore them

As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.

thats what I am thinking...

….last night a guys hand “touched” the helmet of a WR when making a tackle…and a personal foul was called. Tebow vs. KC the last week…a KC defender was on the ground and reached up and hit Tebow in the ankle…and they called a personal foul (contact to the lower body of a QB) I understand the safety precautions, but this is football. Its suppose to be tough.

by akbrown15 on Jan 8, 2012 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

it like they weren't even on the field

If ATL can only score 2 vs NYG then you know the Buc’s have some serious defensive restructuring to do. Even John Lynch himself said on TV that he didn’t recognize what was out there.

Beware!!

by Creamsicle Power on Jan 8, 2012 3:52 PM EST reply actions

Interesting trend I just thought of (maybe someone else has before)

The top teams in each conference all have tight ends that can stretch the field. Graham, Finley, Gronk/Hernandez and Pitta. Couple that with Davis, Ballard, Gresham, and Daniels, may be something there.

As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
