NFL Playoffs Open Thread: Lions at Saints

The Houston Texans have just moved on after beating the Cincinnati Bengals in the first playoff game of 2012. They'll face the Baltimore Ravens next weekend. It's time for the second playoff game now, though.

This upcoming game is likely to be a shootout. Drew Brees and his receiving corps vs Matt Stafford and...well, Calvin Johnson. It helps that neither defense is all that impressive. Can the Saints start another Super Bowl run, or will the Detroit Lions win their first playoff game since 1991? Let's find out.

Talk about the game, the Bucs, football, the draft, coaching searches and whatever else here.

I know I'm a bucs fan.

But I want to be able to say we beat the Super Bowl champs. So go SAINTS.

It will sound more depressing

knowing our last win came against them.

You know what's weird?

I know I should be rooting against the Saints. But all year I’ve rooted for Brees to tear it up because he was my fantasy QB. I kinda started to like the guy for getting me so many wins. It’s hard to do an about-face and root against him. Especially in a year when we sucked so bad and it didn’t matter how much success they had.

I….I just can’t quit you Drew.

Was anyone else disturbed

by how intently Jim Schwartz stared into Michelle Tafoya’s eyes in that pregame interview? They were like a foot apart and he just looked dead in her face, never breaking eye contact, rarely blinking.

….he’s obviously a mad man.

So far there's been discussion about Collinsworth and Costas, but none about Al Michaels.

This guy (if I may borrow from Gruden) is an egomaniac. I always used to think he was the aw shucks, everyman, solid announcer. Which actually he is. But listen to him give an interview. You wanna hear a guy toot his own horn for an hour? Interview Al Michaels.

Ron Jaworski, on the other hand.

That’s a guy I want to get ripped on Tequila shots at MacDinton’s and watch him do his thing. “Ladies, haaaaave you met ‘The Polish Rifle’?”

Have you watch Dominik's press conference.

We won 10 games and there was not enough time to sign anybody for a lockout. Translation we already got a SB team ready we don’t need to sign anybody haha.

For all the people who don't think a team should lay down in order to get a better draft pick...

….I give you Calvin Johnson. Unless you still hold firm that Gaines Adams was worth that extra useless win.

Not to mention Suh versus McCoy.

by Landlubber on Jan 7, 2012 8:59 PM EST reply actions

Ehm

That’s a little insensitive.

Not that you don’t have a point that he was a bust, but still.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

Wow guys, my bad. I'll amend that.

How did Gaines Adams play any year compared to Megatron? My point is this argument that being 4-12 compared to 3-13 is ridiculous.

by Landlubber on Jan 7, 2012 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

3-13 gives you better draft position, hence access to a better player

Not much to argue about that.

But you can’t ask players to lay down or intentionally blow games and then ask them to play hard the next year. Doesn’t work. Shouldn’t work like that, either. Customers come to watch you play a good game, not to lay down.

This ten-game losing streak may have been good for draft position, but I would much rather have seen a couple of wins in there.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

And in retrospect, I wouldn't.

I’d of much rather lost a couple more games in ‘06 if it meant we’d of had Calvin Johnson this whole time. This year will be a forgotten season in a few years. If losing one more game meant gaining a franchise player and potential future hall of famer, don’t tell me you wouldn’t take that over a couple of useless wins.

And yeah, I totally get the argument that you can’t ask current players to lay down. It’s unrealistic for guys to slack when it’s their jobs that will be on the line because of it. I’m just saying all this chest pounding “I don’t EVER want my team to lay down” crap is just that, crap.

If anything, my argument is for the greater good while yours is an empty useless sentiment. Gaines Adams versus Calvin Johnson? You can’t defend that.

by Landlubber on Jan 7, 2012 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

no one brought up that arguement but you

And i find it ’’CRAP’’ to bring up a tragic loss of life over a game..and the was you brought it up by askin how the man this played this year was bigger crap.. get a clue

by 69her on Jan 7, 2012 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

I guess I would agree with you a bit more if your name wasn't "69 Her"

Grow up. I was making a point about the draft. It was a poor choice of words on my part and I admit to that.

Once again, my point was how did G. Adams play any year compared to Megatron?

And by the way, this argument has been going on for a long time, on this site and others. I didn’t bring it up out of the blue. It was a question we were discussing not too long ago right here. Come around more often before you tell me I’m the only person who brought this up.

by Landlubber on Jan 7, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Eh, I think you get a little caught up in the result

Gaines Adams was a bust, but if he’d been a success the difference would be much smaller. Say, Jake Long vs Chris Long in 2008. There’s a difference between a third and a fourth pick, but it’s not as big as you make it out to be.

I watch professional sports because I want to see my team win. When I’m watching a game, I want to see a win. I can’t root for a loss – I really can’t. I understand the argument, I just can’t do it. I can’t get excited about a better draft pick. I can get excited about a win.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

I would never root against my team if it counted.

But when you’re talking about the difference between 4 wins and 3, I’m taking 3 all day long.

And yes, it’s a lot easier to criticize in retrospect with 20/20 vision, but let’s be honest here. Back then, everyone on the planet knew that lading CJ was bigger than landing Gaines.

I’ll drop it now, I’m just saying guys.

Im so glad the Saints have so many free agents

Who do u think they keep. Out of Breez , Meachem, Colston , Porter and Nicks?

by 69her on Jan 7, 2012 10:14 PM EST reply actions

Brees, Colston, Nicks

Those three are key to their offense. Though I would be weary of investing much in Colston given his knee injuries.

Think they let Meachem &Porter walk. Porter isn’t great, Meachem is replaceable.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

They'll find a way

According to ESPN they’re at $106 million, which probably means something like $30 million in cap room if this year’s cap room rolls over.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

No way they let Brees walk

it will come in expense of not being able to keep other guys though.

by Brian Ahmed on Jan 7, 2012 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

He wont sign or play for that if they do..

Would you if you were him? and Nicks might walk,, He will have 2 rings , im sure the fact they put that 2.5 mil a year on him this year is not sitting to well with him

by 69her on Jan 7, 2012 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

There's no way Brees walks away or sits, none

That would look absolutely horrible. Saints will take care of him, but franchise tag is a placeholder while they work on a contract.

They’ll pay Nicks as much as they need to keep him. For that offense (and Brees) to function at top level, they need him. If he isn’t in there, they can’t run that offense.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

Oh i agree about Nciks. but

I think he is a gun for hire after this year. If they win it all he will have 2 rings .. The Saints will have to pay 8 or 9 Mil to keep him

by 69her on Jan 7, 2012 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

Which would be worse

Saints with 2 rings or Falcons with 1 ?

by bucfanlostiniowa on Jan 7, 2012 10:20 PM EST reply actions

We hate each other but overall we all losers somewhat history wise.

I feel like the division as a whole gets disrespected compered to the overrated NFC least. I found myself rooting for the Saints a couple yrs ago well I hav a good friend who is a Saint fan. The Falcons eh I don’t like them but their fans suffered worse than us, if they win 1 I can live with it.

After seeing how much C. Johnson is helping Stafford’s success. I am changing my hope at number 5 this year in the draft. From Morris Claibore to Justin Blackmon. To have a potential #1 receiver who can stretch the field and have incredible athleticism. Makes me feel Freeman’s number would go through the roof. I mean hell look was A.J. Green has done for Andy Dalton. and Justin Blackmon is considered a “SMART” Dez Bryant.

by BucIt4U on Jan 8, 2012 1:27 AM EST reply actions

Also LaMichael James, RB, Oregon

I really hope we can grab him too. If we Get Blackmon and James this offense would immediately become more explosive.

My wish list for the first 3 rounds:
1. Justin Blackmon WR/Morris Claiborne CB
2. Lavonte David OLB/Vontaze Burfict ILB
3. LeMichael James RB

Sprinkle in a FA Vet (LEADER type) LB, CB, and some Oline.

by BucIt4U on Jan 8, 2012 1:33 AM EST up reply actions

had no idea he was that far down as talent.

The way people are talking about him, he’s the next coming of an elite style receiver ie Dez, or A.J. Green. Never mind then my pick is back to Morris Claiborne =)

by BucIt4U on Jan 8, 2012 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Went back and did some research.

And IF Morris Claiborne is already off the board. I am comfortable with Blackmon. Dude catches just about EVERYTHING thrown his way..

The Dez Bryant comparison came from Warren Moon. I think he knows a thing or 2 about WR’s. Not saying he is the best of the decade, but has more potential to be an elite over anything we have right now. His ball skills are unmatched by anything in this years draft or F.A.

Plus a fun little clip i found on youtube (this is just for entertainment).
