NFL Playoffs Open Thread: Bengals at Texans

HOUSTON, TX - JANUARY 07: Houston Texans themed "Storm Troopers" pose for a photo outside the stadium prior to the Texans hosting the Cincinnati Bengals during their 2012 AFC Wild Card Playoff game at Reliant Stadium on January 7, 2012 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

It's the first time the Houston Texans have made it to the playoffs - ever. It took that expansion team quite a while to get going and they were close to getting into the playoffs for years before finally making it.

Meanwhile, they face a Cincinnati Bengals team that hasn't won a playoff game since 1991 - ironically, that win came against the Houston Oilers.

One of these teams will do something that hasn't happened in 20 years: win a playoff game for their respective cities. Which one will it be? Can Andy Dalton get A.J. Green behind the Texans' secondary? Can Arian Foster run wild? Can T.J. Yates be effective?

Discuss the game, the playoffs, the Bucs, coaching searches and whatever else here.

@Sander- What candidates on playoff teams should the Bucs be looking at for HC? Mike Zimmer is one but who else?

Scott Linehan for the Lions maybe

Pete Carmichael Jr. for the Saints and maaaaaaybe Gregg Williams there. Can’t think of anyone on the Texans – Wade Phillips?

With the Steelers I could see Bruce Arians. With the Broncos Mike McCoy (OC). With the Falcons Mike Mularkey, and with the Giants Kevin Gilbride and Perry Fewell.

That should cover Wild Card weekend.

I wouldnt mind wade phillips being considered.

He is a very good defensive guy!!!!

I don't like Wade.

Don’t know what it is. I know he turned the Texans’ D around but he always has that bewildered “deer in the headlights” look on his face. Like Ron Zook.

Maybe so.

But no many head coaches can or could be successful under the watchful eye of Jerry Jones though. I bet he could be successful here!!

Tom Hammond, the NBC announcer

looks like a corpse after the mortician got to him. They either need to tone down the makeup or just go full ret*rd and put him in a powdered wig.

Looks better than I expected

Better arm. Though I’d like to see him sustain that. We all know young QBs can look good for a season in a Gruden system.

I don't really care

I can’t bring myself to watch it anyway. It has diluted the importance, though, as it precludes any Super Bowl players from participating.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

I think they made a mistake moving it.

I don’t know if it’s affected the ratings, but you’re right about it diminishing the importance.

It used to be a great way to decompress after the season. One last bit of football before the long offseason.

by Landlubber on Jan 7, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

I try watching it every year

And then three plays in some receiver catches a 60-yard TD because the cornerback just didn’t bother, and I turn it off.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

I think they should turn it int a touch game

and have the players wear Hawaiian shirts and let them drink Mai Tais on the sideline. Now THAT I would watch.

Yeah, the pro bowl is a great individual honor.

But it is hard to watch. I usually don’t…

Gotta root for whoever wins this one

Love a good Cinderella story vs. the same-old, same-old contenders in the AFC. I’d be OK with the Ravens. But the Steelers or Patriots again? Yawn. And because I’m sane, I have to imagine the Broncos are one and done.

Houston fans have to be really excited

Took them a long time to get here.

My initial thinking in this game was that it would be an opportunity to assess Mike Zimmer as a HC candidate

But I have to say that it’s Wade Phillips who’s catching my eye here.

Wade is not a HC as we seen him with the Cowboys.

He is a 3-4 guy anyway which isn’t a fit for our d-line. I acttually wouldn’t mind seeing what Zimmer has to offer.

by Brian Ahmed on Jan 7, 2012 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

He's not really a 3-4 guy

He runs a 4-3 under with the defensive end having his hand off the ground. Everything else is exactly like a 4-3, responsibilities and all. In passing situations he has four defensive linemen, too.

by Sander on Jan 7, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying we shouldn't consider Zimmer

The fact that he helped get the Bengals to the playoffs after losing his best defensive player speaks volumes, as does how well Cincy’s defense played all year. But you have to be impressed with what Phillips has done with the Houston defense: worst to first is very impressive. And I think that a HC who failed with Dallas has to be given a Jerry Jones caveat: could they succeed with a different owner?

I do agree as long as Jerry Jones runs the team

he won’t bring in a real coach unless he feels desperate when he brought in Parcells. He likes to run the show so he hires yes men like Wade, Garret, Gailey, Campo guys like them.

What if Schaub didn't get hurt?

Do you guys think they would have been the favorites to come out the AFC? They were looking as complete of a team at 1 point.

by Brian Ahmed on Jan 7, 2012 6:50 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely

This team has really impressed me. With Schaub and a healthy AJ, they would be the hands-down favorite in the anyone’s game AFC.

I apologize to the Bengals. Their guys didn’t run into each other.

I'm thinking he ran out of bounds.

I seen the replays good awareness by him.

Was really nice footwork

and terrible tackling (or even pushing).

Stick a fork in Cincy

The crowd’s going nuts- good for them. A playoff victory has to feel good for Houston after all those years of frustration.
