Greg Schiano interested in Butch Davis as defensive coordinator per report
While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers must find a good offensive coordinator to succeed, finding the right defensive coordinator is imperative as well. According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated the Bucs may find that person in the form of former Miami, Cleveland Browns and North Carolina head coach Butch Davis.
Butch Davis was the head coach at the University of Miami when Greg Schiano acted as its defensive coordinator in 1999 and 2000, explaining the connection between the two coaches. Davis is best known as ahead coach, acting as the Cleveland Browns' head coach from 2001 through 2004 and North Carolina's head coach from 2007 through 2010. While his college teams were renowned for tough defenses, his Cleveland defense was pretty awful throughout his tenure.
He does have experience as a defensive coordinator at the NFL level, however, coaching the Dallas Cowboys' defense in 1993 and 1994 after being the defensive line coach in Dallas from 1989 to 1992. Those defenses were some of the best in the NFL, so he does know how to put together a good NFL defense. In addition his experience as a head coach at the NFL level should help Schiano at his new job.

He had experience, thats for sure.
Not an overwhelming choice for me. Not sure how I feel about him as DC… The options out their are very slim.

North Carolina has produced some very good NFL prospects...
during his tenure, and he does have previous NFL experience. I remember his time at The U. Not a bad choice considering what is left out there. We are now feeling the effects of being the last team to solidify our HC position. Slim pickings for coordinators and assistants.
Maybe McNulty not being able to come to us may be a blessing in disguise. Fate often lends a hand in things. Schiano being familiar with him doesn’t necessarily make him the best man for the job. Hope we look toward Todd Haley, or perhaps another with OC experience at the NFL level.

I guess they have officially reached the bottom of the barrel. I figured with this drawn out coaching search we’d end up with slim pickings.

As a 'Nole fan....
I have seen A LOT of Butch Davis over the years, and I would have zero problem with him as the DC. As Sander said, Davis’ defenses were always known for being tough (besides Cleveland, but let’s be honest, it was Cleveland). He has put a lot of NFL quality talent into the NFL, even in recent years from UNC. He has experience, and may know that his HC time in the NFL is probably behind him. Those types of asst coaches are invaluable to new head coaches.
It's funny how cyclical coaching is.
Butch Davis was HC with Schiano and Pagano as DC and DB coach respectively at Miami. Now the tables have turned, both guys have developed into head coaches and Butch Davis is now a DC candidate.
Must sting a little for Butch.

I don't think it's much of an issue for Butch.
He just got his chance earlier than the others. Coaches know how the business works, and I’m sure he’ll just be happy to be coaching somewhere. What happened at UNC wasn’t necessarily his fault, but someone had to take the fall for it. Good coach, and I’ll be happy to have him here to help Schiano and this team.
I agree he's a good coach
and I would be happy to have him. I could care less about the UNC ordeal. However, if the man has any pride, going from being a successful head coach to on of your former assistants coordinators HAS to be a shot of humility. I still think he would operate well within the staff, and I doubt it would be a problem, just making an observation.

I don't think being a DC for an NFL team is THAT humiliating...
I mean, there are only 32 in the entire world. Pretty good company me thinks.

I would absolutely love to have Butch Davis as our DC.
He can get our D back up to par.

As of right now, still more concerned who is going to be the OC
because if we get a lousy one, there goes developing a franchise QB out of Freeman…
Time to shamelessly plug my book and short story!
Having OCs and DCs with NFL experience that buy in are critical
So the past connection is a fairly big deal.
Don't mind this hire
As far as DC is concerned, I am fine with this hire. Based on the previous combination of the two, or defense should be much tougher, and as @mvermulm pointed out, he might just be one o those guys that realized and is ok with just being a quality coordinator at the next level, knowing that his better years as a head coach on the pro level is passed him (a la Dick Lebeau).
Now as far as OC is concerned, when I heard Schiano talking about having an offense that “…runs the ball well and takes shots down the field” I immediately thought of Hue Jackson. Thats exactly what they do over there in Oakland and their offense has been pretty good under Hue. Jason Campbell was doing well before getting injured. Hopefully his debacle at the end of the season in Oakland either humbled him enough to know that when he has a good thing going for him, just stick with it, or scared away other teams from trying to make him a HC again (what I like to call the : Josh McDaniels Syndrome)
Hue Jackson can't find a job
I think stories made it around the league him undermining the HC (see, Tom Cable, Marvin Lewis…etc.)
Not a lot of viable options out there...
perhaps a nice sit down and “none of that crap” conversation with him clears the air.
by Cracker Ball on Jan 30, 2012 12:56 PM EST up reply actions
I'm starting to think Hue Jackson has character issues.
I’m all for Butch Davis for DC, and was pro Hue for OC but not after reading this article. I’ve also read elsewhere Hue isn’t a good play caller.
by Poundtherok on Jan 30, 2012 1:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
He was a pretty good play caller in Oakland this year
Still, I’m sure there’s some truth to that, and he goes through teams ridiculously quickly. But, he’s also good at what he does.
That is an interesting column...
and its a shame things have to be done in a “certain” way to avoid whipping up some kind of racial stink. Remember, it IS in Oakland. Anyone that can read a newspaper knows the make-up, and temperment, in that area of the country.
Sad commentary on our modern “card-pulling” society…
by Cracker Ball on Jan 30, 2012 1:18 PM EST up reply actions
It is sad really because I like Hue Jackson's skills.
I just don’t see Jackson as Schiano’s guy in the Buc’s new TBA system.
by Poundtherok on Jan 30, 2012 1:52 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Had a feeling he'd go after Butch
Which is definitely a good thing for us. Davis would bring pro know-how to the staff and get this defense looking better than ’11. My only concern would be how long could we keep Butch around, especially if he comes in and makes a positive difference.

DC- Butch Davis; OC- Hue Jackson
Yes, please!
Make this happen, Glazers. Time to bring some experience in on this staff.
Love both of those coachse too.
I like it
With that style of defense these guys play, I say we draft richardson first right, then use most of the rest of the picks on drafting guys in the back 7 who can play in this defense, the rest of the problems address through free agency
by keysersoze19 on Jan 30, 2012 11:26 AM EST via Android app reply actions
why would we draft a running back in the top 5
when we need to draft an entire secondary.

We don't have to draft them all...
in fact, I’d prefer we didn’t. Need some experience at the S positions.
by Cracker Ball on Jan 30, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions
I think he was mainly pointing out the rediculousness
Of taking a RB with the 5th overall selection when we have so many holes in our back 7 that we could spend every pick on them and STILL not fill them all.
We couldn't fill them with 2 drafts full of pick...
which is wht the F/A market is so important to us. Wish Dom felt the same way.
by Cracker Ball on Jan 30, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions
Well....
Being as I live in NC, and UNC is shoved down everyones throat here, I guess i have to comment. I hate UNC, but a lot of my colleagues either went to school there or rooted for them since birth so I asked for some insight. From all their indications, this is a good move by Schiano.
He did wonders for the defenses at UNC and brought them back to respectability. He developed a nasty D-line at Carolina before it all went south, and had guys go to the NFL under and his recruits are still flourishing without him. Needless to say what he accomplished with the recruits at the U before he left. He is defense.
All in all, I voted no, then after talking with a few people. I am all for it. Go Duke though!
I'd definitely be on board with this.
Not the most exciting guy in the world, but he knows what he is doing defensively and we could do a whole lot worse at this point.

Let's hope the Glazers are as smart as we think we are...

Not a flashy name, but effective
I wouldn’t be mad at this hire at all, considering what our defense has looked like over the last few years. Dom better earn his money & help court in these coordinators, or his ass needs to go after this year.

Butch Davis was almost a garuntee
The people who said no obviously don’t know who butch davis is….Butch coaching status is legendary..THinking about what greg schiano did at Rutgers times 5 butch actually got the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs..And that year there where tops in the NFL in takeaways and Interceptions…Back in the 90’s he helped turn the cowboys into a defensive juggernaut,he also was the head coach at the University of Miami when they where actually the U and was in BCS contention every year…And he actually made UNC football relevant because no one who knew they were as a football team before he got there..All in All he fits what the BUCS need..He’s turned every program he’s been apart of around…He was once a D-Line coach which is our biggest strength.Plenty of Experience in College and Pro’s..And he coached under the great Jimmy Johnson lets go for it BUCS….
I don't know much about him.
But a experienced cordinator who builds tough defenses and is a former defensive line coach sounds good to me.

He has has success wherever he has been...
and could really help us here. Miss the old days when people got “alligator arms” running across the middle here. John Lynch could lay some wood – No?

What scares me
is he hasnt been a DC since the mid 90s. The game has changed alot in that time. What I do like is the fact he has worked with Schiano. I think a few years together we may have a good thing
I thing generating pressure on a QB...
never goes out of fashion. It forces mistakes because they have to react so quickly. That is our Achilles Heel. Even average CBs look good when there is enough pressure up front (see NYG). Need a fast blitzing OLB too (what Quincy Black was supposed to be).
by Cracker Ball on Jan 31, 2012 12:05 AM EST up reply actions
I Agree W/ Most Comments
Bring in Davis and Hue Jackson it would be a great combination to go with Schiano. It’s not like there is much left for hire at this point anyhow. After both positions are filled shouldn’t be to hard to find OL, DL. DB, WR, QB, LB, HB coaches and our ST coordinator. Hopefully Schiano does look at Hue Jackson as a possible candidate cause we’d all love to see him in Tampa
I Maybe Wrong But I Doubt It
We wouldn't all love to see Hue Jackson in Tampa.
I’ve been pretty consistent with my belief that he would work to undermine Schiano to make himself look good, and try and take the top spot for himself. If it weren’t for his ego and personality, Hue would be a great choice, but he doesn’t allow himself to stay anywhere for long and he is always plotting for his next move up.
Don't forget Billick
B. Billick would be a better choice than hue jackson to me, just look at his resume. Remember what he did with the vikings offense when they broke all those records. Now I would bring him in as a qb coach. Jackson that is

I said the same thing the other day
on the surface this seems like a good idea, but for some reason this guy just can’t get a job, must be a reason.
by bucfanlostiniowa on Jan 30, 2012 4:41 PM EST up reply actions
I doubt Cristobal would leave FIU
but I would like to see him get a position on the staff. Maybe not as OC, but as an OL coach. Though, that’s certainly a step down for a college head coach who will get bigger opportunities in the next 5 years.
