Our first pick - A top 5 scenario - With a poll!

We've been debating this in Rook's superb mock draft, but I thought it would be interesting to toss up a poll and see who we'd take if a bad scenario plays out in the first 4 picks. At least bad for those of us who, like me, want Claiborne as the first pick.

So here's the scenario. The first four picks go Luck, Kalil, Claiborne, RG3. We can't find a trading partner. Who do you take?

I've tried to put in all the top possibilities, but if you want one I missed vote Other and tell me who you wanted in the comments. I also added a special vote for the Richardson fans to distinguish between those who would take him as a backup pick and those who just want us to take him no matter what!

I thought you were Blackmon on this a couple weeks ago

but I understand things are so fluid right now. My opinions are changing daily on these guys as I keep looking.

by aakks on Jan 3, 2012 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

Ya I agree

A trade here would be ideal.

by aakks on Jan 3, 2012 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

But as we've both pointed out before

Who do we trade with and who is our trade partner aiming to get?

The only slim scenario I can imagine is if a team is totally enamored with Richardson or Blackmon and decides we’re likely to take them if they don’t trade up for our pick. But I don’t see who would be THAT enamored with either one of those guys. Besides dcbucsfan, of course. ;)

I could also see someone who really wants their choice of tackle

but these all seem like longshots to me, or trades where the compensation isn’t all that great.

by aakks on Jan 3, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

I dont see anyone trading up except for RG3

If RG3 is somehow on the board than I can see us trading. If he is gone which i believe he will be then no trade. TB needs to take the best player available and in this situation is Justin Blackmon. My wish list would be #1 Claiborne #2 Kalil #3 Blackmon #4 Richardson.

by Stormin Monkee on Jan 3, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Blackmon?

Do we really need another average size, slow receiver? He has good hands, but we already have 3 Blackmons on this team. He is not
number 5 worthy for Tampa

by Kerryad on Jan 28, 2012 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Don't worry about it

I’m sure people will give the “other” in the comments if they have one. Thanks for the compliment, btw!

It was a nice mock

Not buying the running back free fall though!

by aakks on Jan 3, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

I went a little bit outside the box here

and voted for Jonathan Martin. I know, #5 overall is far too high to pick a right tackle (even if he’s capable of performing as a LT as well, if Penn goes down with an injury), but I had visions of no more Trueblood filling my head.

I would love us to land Kuechly, but right now I can’t justify using a #5 overall pick on him. Kirkpatrick as well. And the Richardson train will flay me for it, but I can’t see using the pick on a RB as well. Martin, possibly Reiff are the only value choices in this scenario. But hey, it’s early January- the process has barely begun.

by RookTakesYou on Jan 3, 2012 12:36 PM EST reply actions

Martin is pretty special

I can’t do it because we need RT not LT, but I could see it. Trueblood’s pass blocking is terrible.

by aakks on Jan 3, 2012 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

That would have the making of a great OL...

because I don’t think Donald Penis all that, and RT would be perfect if Jonathan Martin could handle the LT position. Shove Trueblood inside, or sign somebody better (Carl Nicks), and there it is – all fixed with a minimum of fuss.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 4, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Donald Penis?

Am I going MAD, or did the word "think" escape your lips?

by Kilgore on Jan 7, 2012 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Penn would make a very good RT

Doesn’t really have the physique for it. I can’t give you concrete reasons, but I can’t see him there.

by Sander on Jan 4, 2012 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Why not trade back if Blackmon-Richardson-Claibourne are not there?

and draft the best available player with the latter pick?

We have a lot of holes, and this team has some dire needs, but can definitely use an upgrade of talent across the board.

We also need to rid ourselves of the slackers, no excuses for that all. collecting a smooth $1 million and not even hustling.

Should of sent Hayneswurf back to WAS with RAH as a throw in.

by BUCSwillDOMINATE on Jan 12, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Line again?

We need scorers people. The offensive line will be fine if receivers can get open and a running back keeps the defense honest. I like Richardson to provide at least speed and a solid 1-2 punch at RB. That opens up the passing game and a speedy downfield guy like desean jackson completely changes this team to an offense that demands respect. Any opinions on this?

by Kerryad on Jan 3, 2012 2:41 PM EST reply actions

I'm not sold on Jackson

but I’d really like us to make a huge play at a WR in free agency if we aren’t going to draft one (which we shouldn’t unless it is obvious BPA).

by aakks on Jan 3, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Call me Crazy

But I wouldnt mind bringing in Reggie Wayne. I know i might get jumped on for this but this is my thinking. Our current Wrs are Mike Williams, Regis Benn, Desmond Briscoe, and Parker (Tb will probably let go of spurlock and strougher). Desean Jackson may have speed but he comes with an attitude and I doubt he will teach our wrs anything. Reggie Wayne is a veteran that knows how to play and offers a few good years of production and teaching our young wrs.

by Stormin Monkee on Jan 3, 2012 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Bowe would be my first pick

Garcon my second. Not sure if we can get either of those guys though.

by aakks on Jan 3, 2012 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

I like desean jackson.. He just needs to get paid

But he was a force to be reckoned with in 2010

by Carlitin1988 on Jan 3, 2012 9:27 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

He definitely could...

Think Cris Carter. Not the fastest…not the strongest. But had knowledge of the game and preparation. He help guide a young raw talent in Randy Moss into becoming a damn good player…now his antics off the field were questionable, but on the field there were very few distractions to the team.

by Pinnacl3 on Jan 4, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Love

Kuechly = Superman. He has to be a top three option on this list.

by BucsWarrior on Jan 5, 2012 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

I keep looking at Blackmon and saying

Is he going to be an avg rec that you could pick up later. Or am i looking at the next Micheal Irvin. He has the same type size and speed. Then if you look what he has done against top opps , he always seems to have big games. Against Nebraska last year he went for over 150 yards and 2 TDS , Nebraska had 2 corners that are first round talent.

by 69her on Jan 3, 2012 4:43 PM EST reply actions

I voted Kirpatrick

but I definitely think 5 is too high for him.

The other choice I see is Richardson, but I went defense because Barber’s on his way out and Talib is a huge question mark. Richardson would be very nice, but it seems like a luxury that we can’t really afford at this point.

We’re basically starting over and we need to get more defensive pieces in place. We need to address CB and LB early in this draft. Spending our first round pick on a RB really paints us into a corner for our 2nd and 3rd picks.

Not having a 4th really sucks (thanks Dom!), but at least we have a powerhouse superstar like Stocker on our roster.

Am I going MAD, or did the word "think" escape your lips?

by Kilgore on Jan 3, 2012 10:40 PM EST reply actions

I mean, KirKpatrick. Your poll threw me off...

Am I going MAD, or did the word "think" escape your lips?

by Kilgore on Jan 3, 2012 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

The Situation!

Ok, lets look at the whole situation here one of two things can happen here. 1. Browns take RG3 leaving us with not much to trade down for but still possiblities. Yes we could get Claiborn or try and pass him up for Dre Kirpatrick and maybe another second rounder or more. There are a lot of teams that would love to get their hands on a top WR the phins are one of them. I say we try and trade down no matter who falls in our laps at that moment. We need way too many peices to try and home in on one individual. First lets look at FA. Tons and tons of great WR’s this year possibly Dwayne Bowe, Reggie Wayne, or Desean Jackson are all great WR’s that could help our talented young WR’s. S is another aspect we have to look at. I think jackson can get back to his old self with a good off season to train with the team and or back him up with other S’s like Tyvon Branch or possibly Laron Landry. LB there is almost nothing but when i look at 2 very replacably people on the bucks team is Quincy Black and Jeremy Trueblood. I say we try and trade down to around pick 8-17 to pick up Dre Kirpatrick in the 1st. 2nd round is where the fun begins you still have some of the better CB but if Kuechly falls into our laps at round 2 we should pounce and it is a possibilty of this happening with the QB,WR,OT,CB, and RB stuggle thats going on in the 1st round but if we cant get him there are other CB’s that we can pick up even here such as Janaris Jenkins or Chase Minnifield but the there is also a possible chance to draft OG Kelechi Osemele for LG or get him to RT. Our second draft pick for the second round could go to either LB Audie Cole or CB Coryell Judie depending on how the the first pick of the second round goes. 3rd round we can address OT a lot and if they don’t show that they are as talented or more talented than trueblood they would be solid back-ups, they would be OT Bobby Massie or OT Andrew Datko. Also just in case we don’t get enough depth at LB we could draft LB Emmanuel Acho or OLB Sean Spence. Right now this is all up in the air. FA will truly determine where we stand. If RG3 somehow does land in our laps there are multiple teams right behind us that would pay big for him and in return give the Bucs much needed space to work with and give us a chance to fill the much needed CB, LB, RT, and LG positions we need filled. If all else fails i believe we should draft Richardson. Like i said we can get great WR’s from FA we will let Blackmon go by.

by Kildace on Jan 4, 2012 4:00 AM EST reply actions

Just my thought

I think we get Claiborne first priority. If not him, then Richardson. I see these as the two “can’t pass up” guys in the first round. If we miss out on Claiborne, the next best DB is a bit of a fall off. If we miss Richardson, we can always take a David Wilson or a LaMichael James in the 2nd Round. As far as WRs, there needs to a Veteran. Someone that brings some fire and knowledge to the rest of the guys. I think we do well to get a BIG target guy. Someone that’s a true #1 WR. I like our guys already. Plus: Ed Gant, Raymond Webber(look out for this guy…SERIOUSLY)

by Pinnacl3 on Jan 4, 2012 11:35 AM EST reply actions

Could you imagine drafting Morris Claiborne...

and signing Cortland Finnegan? Man, that would be sweet in a pass-happy division like ours.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 4, 2012 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

While taking Blackmon is kinda a no-brainer as he'll be the best WR taken and BPA at the same time

I’d be surprised the Bucs won’t find a team in the mid-rounds desperate for WR they can trade with to a better spot for getting CB Kirpatrick at the right value while snagging extra picks to fill major gaps.

Time to shamelessly plug my book and short story!

by witty on Jan 4, 2012 4:49 PM EST reply actions

I would go with an OT in that scenario.

I’m almost certai nwe’ll be able to trade back though. In fact I think that’s what we’ll end up doing.

by Brooklyn Buc on Jan 4, 2012 4:55 PM EST reply actions

Kalil won't make it to us

I don’t see any scenario where he makes it to us short of an injury or an arrest or totally blowing his workouts. None of that is likely.

by aakks on Jan 5, 2012 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

I think at no. 5 we have to pick someone that will be reliable

Alot of the sexy picks are hit or super miss. We need someone that we know well get production out of.

by Carlitin1988 on Jan 5, 2012 1:23 PM EST via Android app reply actions

Players like that don't exist

There are always questions. In 2009 Aaron Curry was considered a safe, can’t miss prospect at linebacker. Seahawks traded him away for a sixth-rounder this year.

by Sander on Jan 5, 2012 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

well they do exist just not at our pick

i mean luck and kalil are as cant miss as they come. but i agree at no. 5 there wont be a “sure” pick so i think we should trade it away for a later pick IF claiborne isnt there.

by Carlitin1988 on Jan 5, 2012 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

OTs Jonathan Martin or Reilly Reiff...

are both exceptional players and fill a big need. OL players are not sexy picks however. I say we each send a fake e-mail, pretending to be Mike Shanahan, to MIN begging to trade us the #3 selection. Then send another e-mail to WAS with a video clip of RG3.

Foolproof – and the perfect crime.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 5, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

lol

i think we have a chance to come up with a couple of solid corners in this draft

maybe claiborne in the first if hes there then no brainer
maybe chase minnifield will fall to the early second or maybe a guy like stephen gilmore in the early third. that would be awesome. 1. claiborne 2. lavonte david 3. stephen gilmore then cough up some money get laron landry over here even if you gotta overpay him and sign cortland finnegan and its a whole new defense

by Carlitin1988 on Jan 5, 2012 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

Minnifield had some minor knee surgery

Not a big deal, but maybe it drops him just a little bit. I honestly would have no problem double dipping at corner, especially if we can’t (or won’t) land a solid free agent corner.

by aakks on Jan 5, 2012 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

I see claiborne not there in a lot of mock drafts when we pick

so if this were the case, i think we should definately trade the pick away but lets say we Claiborne isnt there and we dont trade with anyone, who then do we take at no. 5 ? i Love Kirkpatrick but i think he might be a reach at number 5 and I love richardson but i dont think we need him so bad to spend a top 5 pick on him. If i had to choose right now i’d probably go with Richardson. Him and Blount automatically become one of the best one two punches in the league, a scary duo for any defense to gameplan for and that might let the lackluster set of receivers breathe a little better. Not only that but if we were to choose a CB in the second round then the talent level might not be that big of a difference since this a corner heavy class imo. But there is no other RB that compares to Richardson. Im sure DCbucsfan will have an erection when he reads this.

by Carlitin1988 on Jan 12, 2012 4:25 PM EST reply actions

If Claiborne is gone, and we can't find a 6-12 trading partner...

I think we should consider RB Trent Richardson. That would be quite a tag-team at RB, no?

by Cracker Ball on Jan 12, 2012 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

the upside to a rb is that they can instantly be an impact on offense

What if we trade the pick to that 6-12 range and he’s still there, would you then take him over kirkpatrick?

by Carlitin1988 on Jan 12, 2012 10:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

That is a tough one...

I think Richardson make more of a “splash” impact than Claiborne or Kirkpatrick, but all the uncertainty at CB, and the slugs that remain, makes filling the CB position a dire need. I do hate reaching for a player under any circumstance but we really need somebody in place.

Now ff we are able to sign a Cortland Finnegan BEFORE the draft happens, this changes the whole dynamic and gives us some flexibility. No, I have never heard anything negative about any of those 3 particular players involved in any off-the-field shenanigans. That is a good question though.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 13, 2012 7:06 AM EST up reply actions

If blackmon and claiborne are gone...

yall should trade down i think, its a pretty WR heavy draft. so there will be talent in the later 1st or 2nd at that position. maybe even if yall manage to trade down just a couple spots yall could take kirkpatrick and still have another pick or so to play with.
