Sports Illustrated 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Morris Claiborne

Morris Claiborne, Trent Richardson. Morris Claiborne, Trent Richardson. Morris Claiborne, Trent Richardson. Mock drafts are getting a little one-sided for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. No tackles, no pass rushers, Justin Blackmon doesn't even pop in regularly. I need some diversity in my mock drafts, guys, this is boring.

But hey, Don Banks of Sports Illustrated just released his first mock draft of the year. He has the Bucs picking, of course, cornerback Morris Claiborne out of LSU. The pick makes sense: with Ronde Barber and Aqib Talib likely leaving this offseason, the Bucs need cornerbacks. A lot. Claiborne is the top rated cornerback, so the pick makes perfect sense. Let's see what Don Banks says:

The Bucs have plenty of options that make sense, but in a division where Drew Brees, Cam Newton and Matt Ryan come calling six times a season, landing the draft's top cornerback qualifies as a no-brainer, especially since Ronde Barber turns 47 any day now. Some mocks have Tampa Bay going for Alabama running back Trent Richardson, but a rusher in the top five sounds a little rich to me.

Don Banks seems to be a reasonable guy...

This division has some ball slingin’ QBs in it – and since we can’t outscore them, we had better learn how to slow them down a bit. Building a strong DEF as we improve offensively is our only real hope.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 27, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

You are so right,

Freeman isnt a guy who will score 30-40 a game, we have to slow them down with defense. Draft defense with early draft picks, then get some free agent weapons for Freeman. i just hope we remember that we couldnt stop a nose bleed

Because that is too much to ask for...

scoring 25 and holding the opponent to 17-20 is much easier to do. If you can score 35-40 points per game, no matter who you play, your team is an offensive juggernaught and cannot be stopped anyway.

I disagree with you because IF you are wrong about Freeman...

you have flushed several years of coddling and nurturing down the drain. Give him the weapons to score just 25 points consistantly (including a very strong running game and solid OL play) and slow the pace of the game down enough to limit the amount of times the opposing offenses get the ball. Improve your DEF with better quality CBs, S and LBs. Brees, Ryan and Newton can’t score points if they’re not on the field.

Fewer drive opportunities = fewer point given up = more wins for us.

Look, our more pressing needs are CB, LB, WR, and TE at the moment.

we can grab a serviceable RB in FA somewhere. But it’s not a pressing need.
Legarrette was shackled by playcalling, not his ability.

disagree...

….Blount had two years to pick up the playbook and couldnt….Now he has to learn a new system…DOH! Also, he doesnt block well…260 lbs…doesnt block. Let’s not even get to his hands as a receiver out of the backfield. IMO (and many others) Blount is not a feature back. He is a change of pace guy.

by akbrown15 on Jan 27, 2012 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

Random thought.

I wonder if Schiano would pursue Rice hard in FA? He is still relatively young for a back. From Rutgers. Not sure if Baltimore can pay him and Grubbs top dollar.

We could get Finnegan or LaRon Landry in FA, and then we could get a RB in the draft.

Jerome Bettis did pretty well after being signed as a F/A...

so I am not so sure about that theory. Especially since we need a RB to split time with Blount – not replace him entirely. Cutting somebodies carries in half should extend their careers, no?

We just need a 150 carry-per-year RB...

to tag-team with LGB. Should not be THAT difficult to find an effective one. I believe our main problem here was Greg Olson and the quality of our OL play.

The more I read about Konz, the more I think we should consider him Round 2. He can play C or G effectively, so we can dump Faine and his salary.

Superstar > Luke Stocker

by Cracker Ball on Jan 27, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not a big fan of trading up in the first round, because it can cost a lot.

But trading up on day 3 of the draft is fine by me. Especially if all you’re doing is pulling forward picks from next year’s draft. That’s the thing about future years’ picks, they’re always there. If there’s a player you want, go grab him. I admit, Stocker is no superstar after one season. But are there a lot of identifiable superstars in the 4th round?

Who needs normal sleep patterns?

by AcadianTraverse on Jan 27, 2012 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Not so much...

but if you give away your picks, how do you find an unidentifiable one?

by Cracker Ball on Jan 27, 2012 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

If I were drafting (ha!)

In the later rounds, if there’s a guy I want, I’ll go for him, maybe pulling a draft pick ahead from next year if he’s available in a spot I can justify.
If there’s no one I’m, I sit on my draft pick, try to trade it down and if no one wants it draft the BPA on my board.

Vincent Jackson would definitely solve our throwing deep problem...

he is fast enough, but more importsantly, he positions himself very well against a defender and uses his size advantage to come down with the ball. Body control and good hands trump rocket-like speed and bad hands.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 27, 2012 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Vincent Jackson would be

A perfect fit for Freeman, and hopefully will be 1 of our top priority’s.

by TerenceJ11 on Jan 27, 2012 4:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

They can't

They franchised him this year, and under the new CBA you’re not allowed to franchise a player more than once.

by Sander on Jan 27, 2012 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Then sign WR Malcom Floyd

he is equally as dangerous – and cheaper

by Cracker Ball on Jan 27, 2012 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

They may be allowed to tag him again,

But if I remember correctly he gets a sizable bump in pay if tagged two years in a row. I’m not sure if SD would want to pay the top 5 WR average pay and then a bonus on top of it for being tagged twice. Vincent Jackson is good, but he’s not a top 5 WR. Top 10 maybe, but definitely not top 5.

by KRoa on Jan 29, 2012 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

Either player would be a huge upgrade for us...

and give us the explosive playmaker we need outside. Both are excellent deep threats because of their size/speed and can adjust well to a ball in flight.

You had better stop the run...

or they don’t have to pass very much. I think running the ball is safer and eats up the clock. Control the clock and you control the other teams ability to score.

No time left on the clock is the friend of defense and the enemy of the offense. Have yet to see a great QB score points standing on the sidelines.

Would love to have Morris Claiborne at 5...

We don’t need Trent. Justa reminder guys Blount still hasn’t had a training camp with the Bucs; he’ll be fine. Find a complementary Back later. IMO we should trade back in the second round if possible in an effort to get more picks. Assuming Morris is in fact our guy in the 1st we should go LB in the 2nd, G in the 3rd round ( cut Faine, resign Zuttah and move him to Center. There will still be qood bax later; Pead from Cincinnati and Bolden from Ol’Miss are couple of my favorites that should be available in the 5th round.

Quote from Schiano's news conference today:
"Great defense, win the special teams battle, and be a physical offensive football team that takes shots down the field," Schiano said. "Physical, run the football physically and take shots down the field. That formula works."

Makes you wonder which way he’ll go in the draft. Also, it seems probable that we’ll go after a free agent that can stretch the field.

A deep threat would do wonders for our Offense.

Just imagine being able to line up with for a running play with Blount in the Backfield knowing the opposing team can’t put 8 or 9 men in the Box.

Would rather have a guy

Like Vincent Jackson than a guy like Desean Jackson, someone who can go deep, but also catch balls over the middle and who can adjust to balls!

by TerenceJ11 on Jan 27, 2012 4:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

^ here here ^

DeSean Jackson is too whiney for my tastes. If he doesn’t get the ball early, he pouts just like TO and Oucho-Stinko. Vincent Jackson catches plenty of deep balls, just like his partner in crime Malcolm Floyd (who I would also like to have).

Besides, DeSean is a little skinny guy, and if he ever gets rocked again (like the Dunta Robinson shot) his career will be over.

I think SF, BAL, HOU and PIT have the right formula to win consistantly...

Build an overpowering DEF combined with a solid run game and use play action passing. To be forced to outscore somebody every single week requires too many thing to go “just right” and things rarely go just right for us here – in case you haven’t noticed.

But apparently guys like Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady grow on trees.

It should be really easy to just pass, score, pass, score, pass, score…

I know Richardson is the sexy pick, big name, big school, glamour position.

But any way you slice it, RB is more than likely going to be a platooning player who may stick around past his rookie contract.

Drafting a CB is a player who should eventually be a full time starter. If you’re investing your 5th overall pick, I’ll side with the player who is going to be on the field more often.

Who needs normal sleep patterns?

but a monster showing at the combine would put him right back in the 1st Round.

Yeah

But him foster & black would be awesome .
Im hoping his character makes him get to our 2nd pick because he & talib are the type of players greg schiano is gonna drill/groom into the elite players they could be .

Quincy Black wouldn't be awesome...

if you paired him with Lawrence Taylor and Pepper Johnson. He would still be an overpaid bust.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 27, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

I Like Quincy Black Game

You gotta believe as the d-line get better he willl also .
When you gotta shed a block on every single play to make a tackle you are gonna wear out & down .
Linebackers need productive d-lineman to be sucessful .
Look at all the good linebackers they goot dt’s & nt’s eating it up so they can roam .
Geno hayes on the other hand is the one who needs work .

by RIP SEAN TAYLOR 21 on Jan 28, 2012 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

Geno Hayes is only a disappointment...

Quincy Black is an over-rated and over-paid bust. A workout warrior that can’t get it together. He will be the strongest and fastest guy working at the car wash.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 28, 2012 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

LOL look if Black seriously put his heart into being a monster

He has all the tools to do so. WE’re not going to get better DT’s than Gmac and Price anytime soon, so he better adjust. I believe in Black that he could be nasty, but he’s gotta come out swinging and make his presence known. Contrary to that, teams run on him and our D so idk what the solution is.. hopefully Shiano knows

by Titankillah on Jan 28, 2012 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

As crazy as this may sound

I couldn’t careless who we get 1st in the draft right now. Our number one goal has to be setting a standard and hiring people who can live by it and effectively teach it to players. A great coaching staff makes or breaks a team.

by Bongo Buc'n on Jan 28, 2012 12:15 AM EST via Android app reply actions

Im sorry but It makes NO sense to draft Claiborn

Since we passed on Asomugha and Joseph who are both man specialist that we need. What a stupid process of thinking on behalf of Dom; especially that Joseph and Aso are proven products and every draft pick is a gamble..

I would have loved to see Jonathan Joseph here...

but Asomugha would have taken too large a bite out of our cap space (I mean – if we actually used it). Would prefer Claiborne (and the rookie scale) and maybe a play for Asante Samuel (trade) or a signing of Cortland Finnegan/Eric Wright for the other CB slot.

We need 2 CBs desperately.

ALL ABOARD THE TRENT RICHARDSON TRAIN!!!

by dcbucsfan on Jan 28, 2012 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, another good choice...

My point was that building through the draft is great and all, but we have SO many holes in our team, it would take 3-4 years to fill them all. By that time, the good young players we happen to have now will be difficult to re-sign and keep. A vicious circle. Since our window is smaller that many here are considering, you basically HAVE to supplement your team with a few good young established F/A signings, or you become the Lions of 10 years ago.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 29, 2012 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

Aso, yes I can handle passing on him, but Joseph reminded me of Talib in the zone.

Well, he’s a free agent again so we could bag him thatd be awesome. That 1st round could used for Richardson. If we let him slip twice , im pretty much giving up on our pass defense improving, instantly.

But heck yeah, our offensive line needs work! Dude, we need a bigger, nastier and hungrier center. Faine doesn’t have the size for a 3-4 showdown w/ a nasty NT, and begs for double. Our LG is wishy-since Im on the fence for Zuttah.

by Titankillah on Jan 28, 2012 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Big nasty C/G... See WIS Peter Konz

like him the same way I liked OG John Moffitt last year

by Cracker Ball on Jan 28, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

Every free agency signing is a gamble, too

There’s no such thing as a ‘proven’ player. Regardless, this team wants to build through the draft. Drafting a cornerback makes perfect sense.

by Sander on Jan 28, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

My argument is...

at least a F/A has an active playing history at the professional level. To me, signing a Jonathan Joseph, Cortland Finnegan or Eric Wright has far less of a risk attached that drafting, say… a Joe Haden. The team can still build primarily through the draft – but supplement judiciously through the F/A market with select, battle-tested players. Me thinks this is Dom’s ego at play.

Yes there is always a risk, but the guaranteed failure is to do nothing (see Bucs 2009-2011).

by Cracker Ball on Jan 28, 2012 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sorry but I don't see a risk w/ Joseph.. him and his team made a heck of a run into the playoffs

And even though they didn’t make it to the AFC championship game or SB, as a Texans fan, they’re probably mad proud of their boys!

by Titankillah on Jan 28, 2012 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

They are crazy proud...

and now their biggest concern is signing Mario Williams (they have no cap space)

by Cracker Ball on Jan 28, 2012 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

williams is a FA right...

hmmmmm

ALL ABOARD THE TRENT RICHARDSON TRAIN!!!

by dcbucsfan on Jan 28, 2012 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

TEX can't franchise him...

because that would be a $22 million dollar hit to their salary cap. They are right there in the AFC, and need to sign a top WR and another top CB to become elite.

Mario Williams will be leaving TEX and is a Julius Peppers type of impact player. Somebody will have to drop A LOT of cash to get him however.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 29, 2012 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

Is signing an established F/A the real risk?

Or is paying the same exact kind of money to Quincy Black, Michael Clayton and Jeremy Trueblood, in hopes they will become better players because of it, the true risk?

Seems no brainer if you view it that way – thereby proving we have no brains.
