Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coaching Search: First Round of Interviews to End by Weekend per Reports

According to Jason La Canfora, both Joe Philbin and Tom Clements have scheduled head coaching interviews with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. It appears that neither coach has turned down the Bucs, this time, as the Bucs continue to expand their coaching search.

Both Jason La Canfora and ESPN's Chris Mortensen report that the first round of interviews will come to an end this weekend, however, when the Bucs are expected to finalize a list of coaches they want to interview a second time. In that schedule those second-round interviews would happen next week, allowing the Bucs to sign a head right around the Senior Bowl.

The Bucs have brought in Jerry Gray, Mike Zimmer, Rob Chudzinski, Mike Sherman, Marty Schottenheimer and Brad Childress for interviews. With Joe Philbin and Tom Clements expected to come for interviews this week, the total comes to eight interviews so far. The Bucs could add even more interviews to this list before the weekend. The coaching search is certainly extensive now.

I think everyone has Chilly last

Question why do you have sherman so high on your list?

by gusjackson on Jan 17, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Why not?

Head coaching experience, was successful as a head coach, seems like a good guy to be the head of a team and bring in good assistant coaches.

by Sander on Jan 17, 2012 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Im not down on him

I just want to know why him. And I’ve also heard the argument that chud might be the right guy only because his success with cam could be more cam then it was his coaching. I don’t know details so I cant argue either way.

by gusjackson on Jan 17, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah his job in cleaveland is even more impressive then what he did in Carolina

That team pretty much had very little offensive talent and still won. If you told me I had to have Derek Anderson at QB and competed against two of the best defenses in the league twice a year and for the browns to put up consistent scoring is incredible. He may have moved up my list after research.

by gusjackson on Jan 17, 2012 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Chud also has the additional advantage of screwing over Cam

Make him switch coordinators in his sophmore year? Yes please. That’s not enough to be an argument for giving him the job, just a nice cherry on top.

by aakks on Jan 17, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Not Unless

Chud is named Assistant Headcoach. Teams can use the title to get around the lateral move as a promotion.

isn’t that already basically allowing him to leave?

by Cracker Ball on Jan 18, 2012 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

They can only stop a promotion with a promotion.

In which if the Bucs tried making him an OC and slapping the “assistant HC” on him, all the Panthers would have to do is the same and it’s blocked. I seriously doubt the guy packs up his family and moves to do the same thing elsewhere.

I don't think they even need to that, honestly

As far as I know the only time they’re forced to let someone out of their contract is if they’re offered a head coaching position.

Solid.

If thats the case he deserves to be right where you put him. We need great assist coaches not just a good HC

My top 2 candidates are Marty & Zimmer

The more I think about Zimmer, the more I’m intrigued. I believe he possesses the necessary intangibles that make successful coordinators, successful coaches.

by J_B on Jan 17, 2012 1:31 PM EST reply actions

Only problem is

The bucs have had a young head coaches for the past decade (remember Gruden was young when he first came here) I dont see them going young anymore. This puts Marty and Sherman as the front runners. But for my money give me Zimmer(who we wont get cuz he is going to miami) or Chud.

Sander, I know it would be taking a shot in the dark

but based on the candidates and your knowledge of the org. which way do you think they go?

Formerly UNFNole

by MNeilson on Jan 17, 2012 2:43 PM EST reply actions

Serious answer

I think it will be Sherman. I think they’re going to go for a retread, and I think they take Sherman over Marty because they want more offense than Martyball.

by aakks on Jan 17, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

So tough to say

I would think Marty Schottenheimer or Mike Sherman, honestly. It feels like they want to get away from what they did with Raheem Morris and then that’s who you end up with. But I also think the fact that they’re still interviewing new candidates means they haven’t been blown away by any of the interviews so far and if someone comes in and interviews really well, he could be the guy.

by Sander on Jan 17, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

They always said they were going to do a lot of interviews

Even if they think they have their guy it wouldn’t surprise me to see them still interviewing.

by aakks on Jan 17, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

They said they'd do a comprehensive search

But they also said that they’d take as long as it took to find the “right guy”. The fact that they’re still working tells me they don’t think they’ve found that right guy yet.

by Sander on Jan 17, 2012 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure the ideal candidate is out there

Not that I know the in’s and outs of how the coordinators being interviewed will run a team as a HC, but the ideal candidate probably has experience in disciplining teams, running an offense but also young, energetic and able to relate to players. Obviously, if the candidate was out there, he would have the job by now. The things they loved about Morris were the latter, now they need to combine that with the former.

I thought Philbin was GBs QB coach - my bad.

That said, I’m not sure why they’d interview young guys with no HC/Coordinator experience – been there done that, got burned. I think there is little chance they choose someone without at least extensive Coordinator experience.

was obviously the Rooney Rule interview. You have to wonder just how ‘constructive’ that rule is. Seems insulting to be called in with the notion that you are probably just being arbitrarily interviewed because your a minority.

Some coaches

Have wowed in interviews and got the job because of it.

Rooney

to this day contends that the Tomlin hiring had nothing to do with the Rooney Rule.

by J_B on Jan 17, 2012 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

Mike Tomlin was the Rooney Rule candidate in that interviewing process

They interviewed no other minority coaches. He wowed them in an interview, and that’s why he got the job. Would they have brought him in had he not been a minority coach? Maybe. Impossible to say. But he was a Rooney Rule candidate and he got the job despite being seen as a massive underdog to Russ Grimm.

by Sander on Jan 17, 2012 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

That's not true

The Rooney Rule interview in that process was Ron Rivera. Tomlin was brought in after the Rooney Rule had already been satisfied.

by J_B on Jan 17, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Huh, really?

Kewl, never knew that. Well, that’d make me misinformed.

In any case, I’ve only heard positives about the Rooney Rule from coaches who have actually been seen as Rooney Rule candidates. I don’t get why you’d be upset about it being insulting when none of them apparently experience as such.

I don’t get why anyone’s upset by that rule at all, anyway. All it says is that one minority coach has to be interviewed. Where’s the harm in that?

by Sander on Jan 17, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Well I'm not debating the effectiveness in which that rule has

broken the mold of ‘we can’t hire african american coaches’, I’m just a bit skeptical of it’s practicality nowadays since that mold no longer exists. There’s no harm in it, but I wouldn’t want to interview for a position if I knew that the only reason I was receiving that interview was because I was white.

by J_B on Jan 17, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

You would right if

If they interviewed me (a black guy with absolutely no experience in the position) then went out and got the coach they want. Then thats the rule not working lol.

by gusjackson on Jan 17, 2012 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

You can't make people hire somebody...

if they don’t really want to. Rule seems silly. Billionaires do what they want, when they want to. It’s a perk of being one (I suspect).

That thinking is all but past nowadays – plenty of evidence to show this too.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 17, 2012 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

Again... if a candidate is worth examining to them

he will be. Don’t need some unenforcable rule to make it happen. Still makes no sense – even in theory.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 17, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Any wasted time... is still wasted time.

It is just one of those “politically correct” things that slows down the works. Archaic and unecessary as the best man will get the job no matter his lineage.
That is a subjective decision left to the guy with all the money. The owner.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 17, 2012 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Even if they know they will not get the job, it can still be productive

Minority HC candidates interviewed only because of the Rooney rule with no chance of getting the job would still gain the experience of interviewing for a HC job. There is a lot you can learn in interviews even if you do not get the job. The experience itself can be productive.

True

that certainly makes sense, but with or without the Rule eventually the NFL was going to realize that African Americans could and would make great head coaches. You could definitely argue that the Rooney Rule was the impetus which sped up that realization.

by J_B on Jan 17, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

How can you definitively say these 2 men got the job because of the Rooney

Rule? I’m not picking on you or anything, I just think it’s easy to point to the fact that both men are black and since they got hired then it was the Rooney Rule at play. Both men were very qualified and have been successful coaches. I could easily make the argument that the hire had nothing to do with their race and everything to do with their skill set (which I’m guessing is the truth).

You can't put the Win

on just the defense, or just the offense. If the Defense doesn’t force NO into several turnovers (including a fumble at the 1), then the 49ers lose. If the offense doesn’t drive the length of the field and score at the last second, then the 49ers lose. It takes competency on both sides of the ball to win consistently.

It's essentially a Sum game

your offense contributes so much, your defense contributes so much, your special teams contributes so much, etc etc

Whatever team gets the largest contributions, wins. Those contributions can come in any sort of balance, but there is no 1 specific formula for winning in the NFL. 3 of the 4 teams left in the post season have great defenses.

by J_B on Jan 17, 2012 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

You talk in circles...

trying to make your point, but you first say things like “defense doesn’t matter anymore” and now try to sound rational with your brand new “balanced teams are best” theory.

Make up your damn mind… jeez.

it certainly seems that way

If there was a sure fire method for success, I’m sure the guys that have spent their entire lives studying and analyzing football would have figured it out by now.

I'm not trying to call you out,

But it seems like A LOT of your posts start out with something like “you can’t be that ignorant” or “you obviously know nothing about football.” Cant you disagree with someone without being rude? I definately dont agree with a lot of your opinions but I dont call you ignorant just for having them. One of the reasons I like this site is because of differing opinions so I’m glad you post a lot, I just dont really like how you do it sometimes. I could be off base because I’m new here but I just wanted to put that out there.

Haynesworth was lazy and took plays off

With a young team, Dont you think that has an effect.. The losing streak started when he arived? The taking plays off by players. The lack of gap control. HE was horrible for this young team

lol wut? The losing streak started well before he arrived

and he arrived because every DT on the team was broken.

It has simply morphed into what we have now...

as the amazing GB attack is based on timing. Disrupt it (as the NYG did) and it can be defeated.

Defense is still as relevant as it has ever been – the NFL is just cyclical and the offenses may just have the upper hand for now.

by Cracker Ball on Jan 17, 2012 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

There are multiple ways to win in the NFL

There isn’t just one winning formula. If there was, everyone would be emulating it.

Eli had infinitely more time

than Rodgers had. The same can be said for Alex smith in comparison to Brees.

I live in NY, and you can’t find one Giants fan who doesn’t attribute this run to BOTH Eli and a vastly improved defense, especially the defensive line.

Agree

Raheem was set up to fail by the organization (specifically the Glaziers) but he also set himself up for that when he willingly lead the charge to fire Gruden, so my sympathy is lost on him. If your going to make the claims that you can handle the job and be successful, and then you don’t, well then your obviously going to get canned, and that pretty much applies in any field of life.

by J_B on Jan 17, 2012 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

He lost control.

Even if his defense was horrid, he probably could have escaped by hiring a DC. He just completely lost all authority and influence on the team. The “Youngry” wore off

It's a hell of a pickup for the Skins.

He’s not a bad coach, but as said earlier in this thread, it wasn’t the right time and he was fully equipped for the position as a Head Coach. Completely different ball game.

and was incapable of achieving success with fairly weak roster. I actually thought it was a great hire for the Skins. Eventually I see him getting a HC gig again and succeeding.

Couple of draft nuggets

Kirkpatrick got busted last night for pot. He’ll slide.

Also, one of the ESPN folks analyzed QB performance and progression over the first several seasons. They found that QB’s who were good in year 1 and who generally regressed in year 2 were often good again in yr 3. And QBs who are not great in year 1 and are good in year 2 then generally regress in year 3. They found (gulp) that after year 3, QB’s are statistically about as good as they are going to get. One of his points was that the Buc fans should be a bit frightened about Freeman.

They also found that the really great quarterbacks were better in yr 1 than yr 2, better in year 3 than year 2, and then they began to plateau.

This is all statistics, so any 1 person can turn out different, but ….

Whatever it is called

it still causes players to slide. Whether the teams actually care about pot or just getting caught, phrases like “undisciplined” and “character issues” will be attributed to him. Right or wrong, he will slide down draft boards, the reason is really unimportant.

Good, we should draft Kirkpatrick, he and Talib can have a Big BONG in their lockers and toke away prior to every game.

Seriously, that is a good thing. He may have slid out of the first round now and can get him for cheap….

The longer they take to hire a coach

the good assistants will become less available. The Glazers cleaned out the whole staff, finding and a good OC, DC, and position coaches will be hard to put together, I’m hoping they make a decision soon.
