3-4 Defense?
As I watch the Ravens Texans game, I like the idea of a 3-4 defense more and more. The Texans went from a 4-3 defense last year, and one of the worst at that, to one of the best defenses and a 3-4 this year. I think any team can make the switch, and the time has come for us to do the same. What does everybody think. Obviously we would have to pick up a few more players, mostly some bigger guys, but we could run a system similar to the cowboys.

You'd have to scrap the entire defensive line to do that
What a waste of talent.
Unless you’re talking about a Phillips style 3-4, which could work: http://www.bucsnation.com/2011/2/19/1996704/could-the-bucs-move-to-a-3-4
It’s essentially just a 4-3 Under with a defensive end having his hand off the ground.
The Bucs spent four first and second-round draft picks on the defensive line in the past two years
All those players showed plenty of potential. Of those, only Bowers would fit a two-gap 3-4 – maybe.
You can build a defense around that defensive line
If you don’t, you’re back to another two or three years of rebuilding the front seven.
There's a good chance we'll be changing to the 3-4 anyways.
If QB’s can learn new offenses every year or two, then D-linemen can learn how to line up in a different gap. It’s not that big of a deal.
Where the heck is Keyser?
It's not about lining up, it's what they're asked to do
In a traditional 3-4, they’re asked to hold up the linemen and be stout. In a 4-3, they’re asked to shoot the gaps. It’s an entirely different style of playing.
I understand that.
But the guys we have are still 300 pounders and are capable of doing the same job. We don’t need 400 lbs D-lineman, the heat would kill them for starters. Either way, it comes down to teaching and learning.

Our DEs are not 300 pounders...
just the interior DL players. I have always preferred the 4-3, even though the 3-4 is everybodys fashion pick now. Seems harder to move 2 big guys than just one big guy in the middle.

I'm against 3-4 this year, because...
I don’t think our LB corp is even close to consider them a strength that 3-4 need. Straight up. Yeah Hayes is usually a fan fav but this year was pretty much terrible for Geno, Black ofcourse and Foster.

It is Doms fault for not signing better DBs and LBs...
he just re-signed our own “meh” defensive players. Need some new blood on the D.

yes to phillips
that is the type I was referring to, I think it could work.
Hopefully mccoy can play the whole year in 2012

Im with Sanders..
Absolutely not, you would have to completely get rid of a D Line full of talent to basically do a “fad”. The 3-4 isnt for everyone and everyone doesnt need to run it. It would take longer than 3 to 4 years to form it as well because you would have to COMPLETELY rebuild our D Line and LB core, starters as well as reserves..
Talent
We just need better talent and better players on both sides of the ball… we basically need to spend money n get players n not get lazy n high school guys

Top 5 Defenses
Ran a 3-4 this past season. I just feel it is easier to blitz and get more creative/exotic with a 3-4 defense. How can you say that the players we have wouldn’t fit a 3-4, the texans switched and they did not overhaul their front 7 one bit. It is not like the players we have now do a great job in the 4-3 anyway. I just think it would be a nice change to see something different in Tampa that is all.
Change is always good
I’m not saying it can’t be done but it will take a vet long time to install to a point where its effective. Houston players were pretty much “bigger” bodies already and like noted earlier its not a true 3-4and since we aren’t getting wade Phillips a would go the full Monty and be a true 3-4 defense and that takes time getting rid of the players who didn’t translate to it and bring in players who do and the back ups have to translate. That’s atleast 4-5 drafts and about the same in free agencies, at minimum.

I think you can be a little more creative in the way you blitz but that's about it. We can still be successful in our 4-3. Plus where does mccoy go in a 3-4 that was as 3rd overall pick

You can have a great D using a 4-3...
as it is about tailoring it to your personnel.

Mccoy at DE... though Fat Albert will be mad to be running the 3-4, remember Titans to Redskins/Pats debacle?

What proof is behind that assumption?
As a 4-3 NT he was an absolute BEAST in Tennessee. I’ll be the first to say, that that $100m contract is out of control stupid, but with McCoy / FatAl/Price/Bowers/Clayborn; atleast we’ll have some decent depth at the dline?
His salary is $7 million
And he was a beast in Tennessee for one year, since then he has been anything but a beast.
DN have been having this exact debate.
The 3-4 may sound all flashy but with more and more teams changing to the 3-4 there will be less and less players to draft or pickup for each team to fit the 3-4. I for one prefer the Vikings to stay 4-3.

3-4 is working
Monkey see monkey do. Nothing can replace talent, if you don’t have talent, it doesn’t matter what system you play.

How can one really be superior to another?
It should be based on using the talent you have in the best way possible – we have been building a 4-3 for 3 years now and finally have some talent, albeit young and inexperienced. Hope we stay on our current path and just add better LBS and DBs. Need to do that anyway.

We need GMC to stay healthy
Then a switch to a 3-4 wouldn’t even be a question.
