Playoffs Open Thread: Giants at Packers
It's 2008 all over again. A New York Giants team that had been mediocre for the entire season travels to Green Bay in the playoffs to face a solid team and a star quarterback. Can the Giants repeat their success and beat the Green Bay Packers at an ice-cold Lambeau Field, or will Aaron Rodgers just slice up this Giants secondary?
I'm putting my money on Rodgers.

you like statistics right...
Here is a list put together by the ny times. http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/01/best-tight-ends-in-n-f-l-the-top-10-list/
Now I know grunt and hernadez aren’t in this list but even if you add both of them that’s 4 out of the top 12 te currently in the playoffs. YOU NEED MORE THAN JUST GOOD TEs!

look at these two things
One how many of them have rings…
Two how much has that list change from 2010 to now. Alot right. So if you draft someone in the top 5 they need to be good for several years. The te position’s top ten changes year to year. Why waste a pick on that. Look at qb I could give you the top ten from 2010 and it would similar to this one.

Kendall Wright isn’t going in the first two rounds, theres alot of talented WRs coming out of bigger schools/markets. Wright would make more sense for us than Blackmon would IMO.

Too many not so good ones do it
I’m just saying it’s probable we can draft a WR that can provide us with the speed and quickness we need later in the draft. Going D first will turn out working pretty well for us

The saints were putting up monster numbers against everyone. And the ravens d did more then beat a team without a qb it got them a low seed with a bye so did the niners
by Carlitin1988 on Jan 15, 2012 6:58 PM EST via Android app up reply actions
And both of them still needed a good offensive showing
Because, shock of all shocks, you need both offense and defense if you want to win consistently in the NFL.
DEF set up a lot of SF points,,,
giving them a short field. DEF matters still.
by Cracker Ball on Jan 15, 2012 7:01 PM EST up reply actions
The Niners had to drive the entire field twice late in the game
You can’t pretend that that was a defensive win. It was both offense and defense.
But if it isn't for that defense they don't beat the saints imo
But yeah I think 4 tds were scored in the last 4 minutes
by Carlitin1988 on Jan 15, 2012 7:04 PM EST via Android app up reply actions
I am pretending that DEF got SF into the playoffs...
likewise for BAL, TEX, and PIT. DEN won with good and late heroics by Tebow. Their D kept them close in those games however.
by Cracker Ball on Jan 15, 2012 7:05 PM EST up reply actions
And all those teams had competent offenses along with them to put up points
Because, yet again, you need both in the NFL. You can’t win it all with no defense just as you can’t win it all with no offense.
Don't want all DEF...
but only scoring points is not the way – as some here would argue.

It's played a few good games recently
But they’ve been a problem for years, and were a problem for most of the regular season too. Can’t ignore 2.5 years of regular season games because they’ve been hot recently.
That's fine, but statistically they are one of the worst in the league.
Here’s the thing. Without a good offence it doesn’t matter.
The idea that a team can win on just rushing the ball and defense is dead.

Pack it in. That was a Giant mistake.
Big Blue fans must be Raven. But in the end we’re all Patriots. Um…..49ers.
This weekend of games kind of reinforces what we've been saying, it aint all about the offense.
And look at the last 10 running backs of winning Super Bowl teams. Not a high pick that panned out or stud among them
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
It's all about the basics.
Dont turn it over, play defense, and things turn out alright, at least in the last 10 years or so.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Still have to be able to put up some points in situations, though
Have to be able to come back from deficits.
RIght, but best offense in league doesnt mean squat in weather and pressure
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
We averaged 17ish points a game (im guessing) and gave up like 28
We can win scoring 18, we cant win giving up 28
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
no, you can't win scoring 18. You need to average 24+

Seems that way. Look at playoff winners over last few years.
Look at this year’s playoffs. Minus the Pats, its been more defense than offense. 49ers won with offense late, but they also stymied Saints for 3+ quarters.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Saints and Packers have won since the rules changed.
Neither won with a stacked defense but a high powered offence backed by an turnover based defense.

Fundamentals
Dont turn the ball over, have some sort of run game, and play defense.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
What are you talking about?
Pass the ball, play enough defense to get turn overs and run the ball a few times a game to kill the clock.

Sure, put that in play. We'll be 3-4 years behind the best offenses and by the time we catch up, its over.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
You need both sides of the ball to win, no doubt.
But I’ll take the historic trend and play defense in the playoffs to win.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Since the new rules went into effect you need a top 10 passer to win in the playoffs and be able to score 30 plus.

Not as big of a change as the no chuck rule
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
'05, I think
And it wasn’t even an official rule change, it was an instruction to the refs to be more strict about enforcing those rules. That made a very big difference, though.
so how much statistics do you really have
If they changed in 2010 and defense are just now getting used to these new rules. Who’s to say that a defensive guru wont figure out a new way to slow down these high powered offenses.

Missing on an onside kick isn't that big of a problem in the NFL now that kickoffs have been moved up
If you miss, you spot the opponent thirty yards. Not a huge difference.

On a crappy defense.
You’re missing half the argument. You dont have to have a big offense to win, but you have to have defense.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
You want to point to the 37 points and call it a day.
The defense is what won it. They didnt need 37 because of the D.

Unless the running back is a once in lifetime running back I wouldn’t do it. You can get a pro bowl back in 4th or 5th round. Qbs wrs dt de cbs and offensive linemen. That’s all the positions that should be drafted in the first round.
