Which Head Coach do you want the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to sign?

"Hire Mike Mularkey? I'm about to kick your butt for that."

We've seen a lot of names come by since Raheem Morris was fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Most of those names are similar: "retreads". Coaches who have experience, but haven't won it all. Coaches who have shown they can win, but who also have some clear flaws. There doesn't appear to be a perfect candidate among the current crop of interviewed coaches.

So, I ask you: which coach would you prefer? There's some healthy momentum for Marty Schottenheimer, the 68-year old who has won a lot of regular season games but hasn't won in the playoffs. There's Mike Sherman, the guy who won three division titles but was fired by Texas A&M and didn't do much in the playoffs, either. Brad Childress and Wade Phillips have gotten looks, too. And there's Jerry Gray, a Rooney Rule candidate or a valid choice as a head coach?

So, who do you want to see as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' next coach?

No way on rest or I find a new team to root for. If they hire Shotty I would like them to hire an aggressive OC that runs a spread or fast tempo style. Freeman seems to do better in that type of tempo (hence, his only scoring in last drive of half or game). Why not play to his strength? I never got why Raheem or Olson never did that?

It really is telling who they HAVEN'T pursued yet

Kelly, Chud, Zimmer…

Pretty much anyone who is a potential up-and-comer.

That doesn’t sound like they’re keeping their options open.

Marty

will bring in better qualified coordinators. He is very well respected and you know if your a coordinator under him you will have a job as a head coach potentially

by gusjackson on Jan 12, 2012 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

This

It seems like the biggest downside people have to Marty is his age. But if he brings great coordinators with him so that he can retire in 3-4 years with a succession plan, what’s the problem?

by bmsimons on Jan 12, 2012 11:24 AM EST reply actions

Think about it seriously

Marty is the best coach we can get without reaching and overpaying for an “up and coming” coach that may or may not succeed. Why not go with a guy who has won almost as many games as this ENTIRE FRANCHISE!

by gusjackson on Jan 12, 2012 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Why worry about that?

I’m worried about turning the team around and building a solid, well coached core. Most coaches don’t stick around that long anyway.

by aakks on Jan 12, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Bngo

If we get 4-5 good years from a proven winner with a good succession plan IMO, it’s the best thing for this organization. Why take a chance with someone wo proven success? We need a sold turnaround and Marty can do that

by gmaz1 on Jan 12, 2012 11:34 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

It is a long term solution

He will bring in a coordinator that will take over after he leaves. It will give this franchise continuity which it has never had. This is not a very attractive job at the moment. Schotty will make this a more attractive job for the future “up in coming” coaches. There is a reason they are not interviewing them. They want experience and they want to regain a franchise identity. This is the best start.

by gusjackson on Jan 12, 2012 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

I think I would rather have someone who has a long term plan than just a quick band aid.

We have a whole roster of young players who would benefit from a guy who could stick around longer than 2-3 years.

by Bucs on Jan 12, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

If the offense or defense performs well and we start winning, I would think that the head coach would stick around longer.

Which is another reason why a good coordinator would skip the Tampa job. “Head coach in waiting” sometimes works in college and rarely in the pros.

by midnite on Jan 12, 2012 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

This is not a band aide

Its more like physical therapy. Setting a mindset for this team. They want to go the Steelers Baltimore route to making a team. They want the bucs to associated with the words discipline and smart. When Dungy came in here he established a mindset that carried on LONG after he left the organization. This is what this team needs.

by gusjackson on Jan 12, 2012 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

But Dungy wasn't hired as a quick fix. He was hired as a long term guy. Same with Gruden.

Honest question: Has there ever been a successful hire of a “has-been” coach to come in and change the philosophy of a team?

If we’re going to gamble on our team’s future, why not do it with someone that is a promising coordinator? Don’t let the Raheem situation scare us away from going that route.

by Bucs on Jan 12, 2012 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

And look how long they lasted.

There is no such things as “long term” in the nfl. You can count on one hand how many coaches that have coached for more than 10 years in this current NFL. If we get a great coach for 5 years and make a natural transition to an up and coming coach that has already been in the organization is the best direction for the future. Its about establishing a franchise identity. This is asking alot from an up and coming coach, when most of the guys who could pull that off dont want to be here.

by gusjackson on Jan 12, 2012 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

But a long term coach is what every franchise aims for.

They want a guy who can build a successful team over a course of 7-10 years. Nobody wants a few years of winning, followed by a down period, then a firing period, then a rebuild. Look at the Saints. They hired a coordinator (basically) who became a great coach for them.

68 year old transition coaches are just delaying the inevitable.

by Bucs on Jan 12, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Or training the next

I see it as Marty teaching teachers. He shows a good young coordinator how to coach in the NFL. Then they step in with principles and confidence right away. No learning period. Look who Sean Payton learned from Bill Parcels. He learned what it takes to win from one of the best.

I'm all for going green..

But why this list of recycled coaches? Yes they’ve all had some level of success, but clearly it didnt work for them with their franchise. I’m all for bringing in Shottenheimer assay a team consultant-but at 68 how can he really be a valid long term fix? Nothing against the older generation, but has it worked before? Ask Joe Gibbs when he tried it… I think we target Shottenheimer from the angle as as a VP or something along that line-for bringing us back in the right direction to establish respect for our franchise again-then grab the best available up and comers. I’ve been big on Pete Carmichael Jr.,He’s on everyone’s radar now and Peyton is letting him call the plays. Maybe even take a look at bringing in Kirby Smart for DC. or someone along those lines.

by bmsimons on Jan 12, 2012 11:45 AM EST reply actions

Also

The only two coaches in the nfl that have coached for 10 or more years right now is Andy Reid(who was almost fired this year) and Bill Belichick. The next two on this list are Lovie Smith (2004) and Marvin Lewis (2003). Its a WIN NOW league.Lets get a guy who can WIN NOW!

by gusjackson on Jan 12, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Comparing Marty to Gibbs....NO

Gibbs coached in an entirely different era. There have been a few changes but it was only 2006 when he last coached not 1992 when Gibbs stopped. Plus Marty hasnt taken a break from coaching even though it wasnt at the NFL level. His mind has still been in coaching. And most of all Marty WANTS TO BE HERE! How many coaches are jumping up and down at this job. We get a hall of fame coach that set the tempo for the entire franchise and we act like thats not moving in the right direction. This is exactly why most great coaches don’t want to be here: Poor fan base and cheap owners.

by gusjackson on Jan 12, 2012 11:52 AM EST reply actions

I get what you're saying...

But a lot has changed in even 5 years that he’s been gone. He wants here-b/c he wants anywhere. No one else is trying to interview him. The comparison is there. He’s an old guy that wants to get back in, which I respect and I’m not arguing his ability to win…but I don’t see him as being the fix of the franchise. He in fact did take a 5 year break from coaching-only to come back for the 2011 UFL season-which yes they won the championship, but it’s not the NFL. Their record was 3-1 on the season. You can’t gauge coaching after only 4 games.. I mean Raheem went 4-2. His resume is impressive, but he lacked the big game winning. I think he need to target big name help, not big name coaching. Give him power-but power of personnel not power of coaching. Look at the lthe list of the teams in the playoffs. With the exception of Belichick, Coughlin, and Fox… They were all new prospect coaches who were hired in the past few years. The teams who are winning didn’t recycle to get there.

by bmsimons on Jan 12, 2012 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

True

(Actually the Redskins BEGGED Gibbs to come back. It was pretty pathetic lol.) The fact he hasnt won it yet is one reason why I want him. He will be hungry to prove doubters wrong. When the Bucs went 10-6. That was their mentality, proving doubters wrong. Plus the losses that he had in big games were not due to coaching but pretty much bad luck.

Why would he make a parallel move?

He’s already a DC. Unless he doesn’t like Cincy (possible) and wants to go somewhere with a better chance to move up to HC.

First off, where is the proof of “weak tackling”. Second, let’s say he is a weak tackler. What does he do well? He covers extremely well, has great instincts, great height for a CB, good leaping ability, above average speed, great ball skills, and also excels in zone coverage. I think that is enough for me …

Marty Schottenheimer Is The Coach To Get! Please Hire Marty!

If Marty Schottenheimer gets the job I become an immediate Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. Why Marty is not a GM/coach in the NFL is a mystery. The man is a great coach, teacher, developer of talent and makes losers into winners. Give me Marty ball anytime. I have been waiting since 2007 for an owner in the NFL to see the value in Marty Schottenheimer.

I love when the fans dump on Marty Schottenheimer. Can someone tell me when was the last time KC was in AFC title game? Oh yeah that was Marty Schottenheimer. All these franchises have gotten rid of Marty because he couldn’t get them over the hump they claimed. He lost in the playoffs. Well who has gotten these franchises over the hump since Marty was fired? The answer is NO ONE. Did two time Super Bowl coach Dick Vermeil one win, one lose in Super Bowls get KC there? Did he get KC to the AFC title game? Marty got KC to 10 playoff games in 9 years. KC has been to 3 in the last 11 years since firing Marty and lost all 3. So I guess those coaches including Vermeil could not win in the playoffs at KC either. Vermiel got them to one playoff game in 4 years.

Maybe someone can tell me when the last time Cleveland was in an AFC championship game was that Belichick who got them there? Oh yeah it was Marty ball that got them there last. Marty had Cleveland in 6 payoffs games and two AFC Championship games in 4 years. His record was 44 – 27. Belicheck was 36 – 44 in fours years at Cleveland. The Browns have been to 5 playoff games since letting Marty go 22 years ago. One less than Marty had them in.

How has Washington done since dumping Marty after one season? Did Spurrier, Gibbs, Zorn get them over the hump? Did Shanahan get them over the hump yet? How has SD done with the team Marty built after that genius Spanos backed the other genius Smith and dumped Marty after a 14 – 2 season? After Marty took a big losing football organization and turned them into a winner. Looks like the team has gone downhill with each preceding year since Norv Turner was handed Marty’s team. Even in a woeful West division and the cupcake schedules SD has had the last two seasons.

Yeah people love to bash Marty but Marty’s legacy is he made winners out of complete losers. Clevleand, KC and SD where floundering when Marty took over. Washington was no better than mediocre when Marty stepped in and after one season had them moving in the right direction.

Yes he lost in the playoffs more than he won but he got his teams there and to date none of his replacements at these franchises have done better even after they came into a winning situation built by Marty and this includes Super Bowl coaches who evenutally coached at these franchises. With a break or two Marty would’ve been to two or three Super Bowls but tell me who has taken these franchises to Super Bowls since Marty ball was dumped? The answer is NO ONE. Maybe it’s the franchises and Marty is better than people give him credit for. Maybe he does more with less.

Please Tampa Bay hire Marty!

well said Sparticus

great stats…i am totally on this Marty train. A proven winner vs a “we think this guy could do a good job”. Sorry, the latter does not work. We need a winner with good leadership that can turn this franchise around quickly. We know we likely wont get more than 5 years out of Marty. I’m oK with that. He does such a great job developing talent that with a good transition plan from Day 1…his successor will do great. What is the average length of time of a head coach in the NFL with one team? Anyone know? I’d be willing to bet its under 5 years. Give me some Marty Ball…PLEASE

My whole issue is what is the main problem on defense?

Tackling. Hands down. Its not like we are getting torched deep on defense all the time. They either run it down our throats or a short pass turns into a big gain because of missed tackling. I just dont see how our defense is going to improve drastically because we draft him. Now if it was a safety or linebacker i understand. But i strongly fear that him developing into a great player may take quite some time… (that we dont have). If we draft him and nothing but other rookies to come in and start our defense will still stink. But i have a feeling our next coach wont be playing that stuff with this all rookie defense. I dont think we will get Claiborne.. we will get richardson and get good CB prospects in the 2nd round and or a linebacker in the 3rd. And we will be very aggressive in FA.

Makes the most sense

This is all im saying. Tackling and youth are the major issues not coverage. I would rather but weapons around freeman and go from there. Trent Richardsons ability to block in the backfield will help Freeman grow and develop into the qb we all want him to be,

I’m sort of weary about his kid coming in as O.C. but how can you critique his recent body of work with Mark Sanchez as his QB. Marty will bring peace and restore in TB. Hopefully he can be the guy to tell K2 to quit whining and get his Shannon Sharpe on.

I choose

Marty after hearing an interview from an ex player on what the buc. I was convinced that he may the right guy. He can lay down the law and at the same time be gentle and connect with his players. I was a little curious if the Bucs went with an all out disciplinarian it could ter the locker room apart big time. Because not everyone like to be yell at. Plus, sometime yelling make a person worse. According to his ex player it seem he has that perfect balance.

My second wish is Wade Phillip. I think we do have the pieces to at least startup the phillips 3-4 if that change occurred. Wade had overrated Romo which lead to his firing. Good in the regular season… suck in the post season. More of it is on Romo.
