Tampa Bay Buccaneers release Rudy Carpenter, practice suggests other roster cuts
The Buccaneers have made their first official roster cut of the day, cutting backup quarterback Rudy Carpenter according to the Tampa Tribune. The NFL has eliminated the third-quarterback rule in favor of an extra active roster spot. The Bucs plan to take advantage of this roster spot by having Micheal Spurlock on the roster, who can act as an emergency quarterback in addition to contributing as a receiver and returner.
The Bucs have offered Carpenter a spot on the practice squad, but the third-year player will have to clear waivers before signing on.
In addition, Stephen Holder reports that a lot of players are missing from practice today, suggesting that cuts have been made. WR Ed Gant, RB Mossis Madu, TEs Nathan Overbay and Ryan Purvis were all missing from practice. I expected all four of those player to make the roster. In addition, LBs Derrell Smith and Simoni Lawrence were missing from practice.
S Devin Holland, DE George Johnson, CB Anthony Gaitor and WR Preston Parker were all present, which probably means they have made the roster. Devin Holland making the roster is a bit of a surprise. The undrafted rookie has made some really dumb plays on special teams, but does have the physical ability to succeed as a core special teamer.

Parker had a nice burst
But Gant took two tackles for a 96yard TD.
I definately didn’t see Holland making it, especially with the over abundance of safety talent.
I think Holland is the last man on the roster and mostly a special teamer
Still a little surprising.
Ahmad Black?
Really bummed that it appears he won’t make the team.
im not too surprised at Overbay and Purvis being cut.
Winslow, Hardy, and Stocker isnt too bad. yah the other 2 are rookies but hardy has promise as a receiving TE and stocker does as well with good blocking skills.
Derrell Smith was missing? umm...
so who is going to be the back up LBs? Watson, Hayward, and who else? i was really surprised when McKenzie was cut yesterday.
that scares me....
Hayward can easily go down because he plays special teams. i hope we sign up someone else on waivers for another linebacker.

I'm hoping Carpenter clears waivers
If JJ leaves next year, and there seems to be a good chance he will, having a backup with some experience in the system will been nice.
I imagine having Holland on the team signals they’re planning on brining back Tanard.
Parker over Gant and obviously cutting McKenzie seem to be the other big surprises.
Also I thought Moore’s versatility and experience would have lead to him making the roster. But I guess they’re realliy pushing hte talent over experience concept these days.
Who needs normal sleep patterns?
Tyrone McKenzie
Im glad he was cut. He really was bad. He was worse than Rudd as far as tackling. I really dont see Parker making it though. Nothing special to me about him at all, and he dropped alot of balls.
