I mostly agree with that Romano piece
but I think it is a mistake to not have grabbed an upgrade or two beyond the punter in this year’s FA class considering how much under the cap we are and how broad the FA class was. Good plan but a bit too fanatic about it is I think the right description.
Even the teams that people point to...
as the “model” of what Dom says he is supposedly emulating (PIT, GB, IND) are signing people. It does appear that the grinchy handling of the F/A checkbook has swung too conservative. Moot point now because all of the great young “splash” players are long gone.

Green Bay and Pittsburgh are signing no one now
And Green Bay hasn’t signed a free agent (other than undrafted & a few backups) since Woodson. I’m not sure Pittsburgh has either.
When did Pittsburgh last sign a free agent other than a special teamer/backup?
I know the answer for the Packers: Woodson, ’06
From the "Real battle" piece
On Wednesday, the only players who missed all or part of practice due to physical concerns were tight end Luke Stocker, fullback Erik Lorig, defensive tackle Brian Price and defensive end Da’Quan Bowers.
Anyone know what was wrong with Bowers? I thought he was looking good and healthy, but then I read that AND read that Moore is challenging him for the starting spot? Really?
Nothing is wrong with Bowers
He’s been held out of several practices so far. It’s just a precaution as he’s coming off an injury and they’re figuring out how to manage his knee. They’re doing the same thing with Benn.
Kyle Moore has supposedly looked very, very good in practice. We’ll see if he can keep it up into the preseason, but he looks much improved – and that was necessary. He’s always had the talent to be good, so maybe he finally got it this offseason. We’ll see in preseason, I guess.
Ok that's all good news
I’m glad Moore is challenging because he’s improved and not because Bowers is having problems.
Happy for Moore
Even with the emergence of Bowers, it is nice to have a rotation of guys.
I am just happy we don’t have Stylez back. I heard his work ethic in practice was lackluster.

Maybe a bit off topic...
But has anyone seen the info on the Trueblood contract? According to what I am reading it is to the tune of 2 years 10MILLION!!! DOesn’t that seem to be a bit much?
That is what I was thinking too. Sounds like "Starter money" to me

Epic "re-sign" fail...
Signing Trueblood to appease Davin Joseph means that Joseph has actually cost $39 mil instead of $29 mil – and we get a free Trueblood.
by Cracker Ball on Aug 4, 2011 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions
Yup...
What really stings is either A: Trueblood will start (which is fine if he gets better at pass blocking..long shot at this point) or B: we are paying him 5million a year to ride the bench.

I don't know if that's why they signed Trueblood
That’s a horrible reason to re-sign a player anyway
I like the Trueblood re-signing
It was better than overpaying for Doug Free. Plus you get to give him another chance with a new line coach.
Plus, we made Dallas spend a lil more on Free, it is a win.

It's not necessarily dumb, because it just adds competition
It’s not an optimal use of money, but it’s not like that’s a concern for the Bucs right now
Shouldn't compare the attempt at OT Doug Free...
who is a very good OT, to the signing of Trueblood who is not. We could have had very good bookend tackles for the next 5 years. Now we are still looking for a RT and $5 mil lighter.
I say we draft our guy in the 1st or 2nd round this upcoming year
The other pick should def be a CB.

We don't want to reach for a player...
just because we need a CB, RT or whatever.
