Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday Practice Notes
A little late as I wasn't around during practice, but here are the notes for today's padded practice.
- Arrelious Benn was out at practice, and looked good, but wasn't doing any work with contact. He's being held out of some practices and playing in others as the coaches see fit, and he may not see much action in preseason games. But he should be ready for the regular season.
- Backup QB Mike Coughlin looks pretty bad. No surprise, he only had a handful of passes in his college career.
- Erik Lorig is out with an Achilles strain. Stocker and Lorig are the only players to have suffered injuries during practice so far. That's pretty good for the Bucs, given the limited offseason so far.
- Rookie linebacker Nick Reveiz out of Tennessee is working out as a fullback. That's the kind of thing these bottom-of-the-roster players need to make the rosters: make themselves valuable, and make an impact on special teams.
- Raymond Webber is making an impact on special teams as a gunner. As I've said before, I have high hopes for this player. The fact that he's looking good as a special teamer is a good sign for him, and gives him a chance to make the roster.
- Mike Williams continues to look stellar. Not a drop so far, according to Anwar Richardson. Last year, that was the one big weakness in his game.
- Kyle Moore continues to flash, according to Raheem Morris. I've heard good things about him from others as well. That's good for the Bucs, but it's also something Moore needed to do right now. He will be cut if he does not improve significantly this preseason.
- Luke Stocker seems to be healing relatively quickly. Hopefully he can play in a couple of preseason games. The Bucs were planning on making him a big part of the offense before his injury.

Is it safe to say that Olson likes physical run after the catch recievers?

Also, as a roster bonus- They love versatile OL.
Hardman is now trying LT too.

Is it possible that someone takes Rejus's place as the starter?
I would imagine that if it was possible for Briscoe or another wideout to take his spot that maybe they wouldnt hold him out of practices and preaseason games.
Kinda putting him at a disadvantage if the second starter spot is really up for grabs.
Josh Freeman will be better than Matt Ryan, Cam Newton cant compete with FreeFive. Not so sure about Drew Brees.
They'll give Benn every opportunity to succeed.
He’s young enough that he won’t lose his job to injury this year. Briscoe will likely make hay and nab a spot on the roster but unless Benn is more limited than the team is letting on, he’ll be out there for the regular season.
I think the risk of him losing his job
is a better risk to take than pushing him and blowing out his knee again.
We want the ball, and we're gonna score!
Good to hear that Luke is getting better
Hopefully Lorig heals quickly to.

I've been re-watching last seasons games
and , of course, following the preseason training camp news. A couple things…
Benn started making an impact a lot earlier in the season than I thought. He made some clutch catches in the Bengals game. He also had a miscue with Freeman, not picking up a hot read. But he obviously improved as the season went on. I hope he is truly recovered and ready to continue to grow this year. He has great burst after the catch and really ran the smoke routes, bubble screens and end arounds very well.
Mike Williams did have a case of the dropsies, especially early on. He also had a case of fumblitis. Again, they seemed to both get better as the year went on. It sounds like he hasn’t dropped anything that’s come close to him so far in practice this year. Looks like he may be even better this year.
Blount has a wicked quick side-step to avoid first contact, but it got him in trouble a lot as well, as he should have just hit the hole instead of dance around or cut outside. And I’m not just talking about the 4th down play. I hope they’re working on that with him as well as his pass reads and routes and blitz pickups.
Earnest Graham still has it. Whenever he touched the ball, he performed well. I’m not worried at all about our 3rd down back so long as it’s Graham. Still sad to see Caddy go. And there’s no way (based on last years limited time) that Lumpkin should be considered a viable 2nd RB or 3rd down back. He had zero success last year on any of his attempts.
Quincy Black may not be the best blitzing LB, even though that’s the way they were scheming the defense. But he does have an uncanny ability to jump at just the right time to knock down passes on his way to the QB.
Gerald McCoy looked like he had a great first step, but watching him run after QBs, it looked like he couldn’t catch Brad Johnson in a 40 yard dash. Maybe him slimming down this year will help his top end speed as well. Brian Price in his limited time last year was always pushing the line toward the QB unless he was double teamed. Hope he recovers, guys a beast.
EJ Biggers doesn’t tackle, he dives at feet, they need to work on that, but in coverage he’s on the receivers hip almost every time. Even against Calvin Johnson he had decent coverage, but Megatron knows how to block out well (wonder if he played basketball?) It also looked like he was starting to get better jumps on the pass as the season went on. Could lead to more INTs for him. Here’s hoping.
Ronde is ageless. I stopped counting at about 6, but Talib got beat deep quite a bit (although one of those I think he was expecting Sabby to be helping over the top…. what was he thinking???). Ronde? I’ve yet to see him really get burned by a WR in last year’s games. He’s ridiculous in the run game, making tackles in the backfield from the backside…. Keep it going Ronde!
Anyway. The point of this is that I think there’s a real reason to be optimistic this season. We didn’t get FAs to improve, but looking at how certain players improved from week 1 to week 17 during the season, it’s hard to think they can’t continue to improve through camp and pre-season and be a better team this year…
Good post, I agree with a lot of things you said
Ronde got burned quite a bit, though. He jumps a lot of routes on pump fakes, which is great in Tampa 2 but can get him in trouble when it’s, say, Cover 3 and he has deep responsibilities. Matt Ryan took advantage a couple of times at least.
Stephen Holder (I think) said that Penn has been pushed to work harder (by himself) against Clayborn.
Stylez G. White- You are now useless.

What's the word on Bowers right now?
I have heard the knee is looking good, but how is he doing? Is he looking like the once possible No. 1 pick, or is he looking like he still recovering a bit?
Why is Will Barker in the starting lineup?
We may be better off with Kenyatta Walker 8-x
Formerly UNFNole
Because Joseph, Trueblood, Lee and Dotson are all waiting for the CBA ratification
He won’t be on the field next year unless we see a rash of injuries again
I have a lot of stuff going on so I haven't delved too much into the camp recaps
Just kind getting the general feel of how this are going from the headlines.
How has pass pro been? Only thing I’ve seen is that Clayborn is making Penn work, but no real synopsis of passpro
Formerly UNFNole
Pass pro has been bad
But that’s no surprise with all of those guys out.
Faine, Larsen and Penn have all looked good, and Zuttah has looked decent. The right side is supposedly a disaster, but they have no one there right now who will actually play.
