On December 4 2011, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will make TE Jimmie Giles the third inductee in the Ring of Honor. As usual, the game that day will be a throwback game, where the Buccaneers wear their old creamsicles. In the first such throwback game, the Buccaneers beat the Green Bay Packers 38-28 as Josh Freeman earned his first start. Last season, the Bucs lost 28-24 in a heartbreaking game to the Atlanta Falcons. In 2011, the Buccaneers will play this throwback game at home against the Carolina Panthers in week 13 of the season.
The Bucs could also have chosen to hold this game in week 1 against former division opponent the Detroit Lions, in week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football, or in week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday Night Football.
In his speech at the press conference announcing his induction today, Jimmie Giles talked about the goal of the early Tampa Bay Buccaneers: to earn the respect of the league. They didn't feel like they got that respect until 1979, when they made it to the NFC Championship game. And, as all players do, he thanked his parents, coaches, family and his wife.
Holding this throwback game against the Carolina Panthers means the Bucs will have held a throwback game against a current or former division rival each of the three times they've held those games. The Bucs will likely get a chance to play against first overall pick Cam Newton as they honor Jimmie Giles.
