Sunday NFL Open Thread
It's Sunday, and that means it's time for some NFL football. Some good football, unlike the schlock we were forced to watch yesterday night.
Plus, fantasy football playoffs are happening. So if you're in a playoff match, this will all be interesting.
Early Games:
Cincinnati Bengals @ St. Louis Rams
Okay, so, this game is still going to suck. The Bengals aren't the greatest team, but they've been pretty solid. The Rams have been absolutely horrible, and they will be forced to miss Sam Bradford in this game, too.
New Orleans Saints @ Minnesota Vikings
Can you say blowout? I can. But it'll be fun to see if Jared Allen can break Michael Strahan's somewhat fake sack record.
Green Bay Packers @ Kansas City Chiefs
Can the Chiefs beat the unbeaten Packers? No.
Seattle Seahawks @ Chicago Bears
This should actually be a good and evenly matched game. Both teams have good defenses, a solid running game, and an incompetent passing game. And they're both fighting for playoff spots.
Tennessee Titans @ Indianapolis Colts
Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
Washington Redskins @ New York Giants
The Redskins suck, the Giants need to win to be in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Carolina Panthers @ Houston Texans
Cam Newton is exciting, but the Texans' running game is going to kill this Carolina defense.
Miami Dolphins @ Buffalo Bills
Blargh.

Miami's got a shot
After all they’re playing Buffalo- the only team that’s had nearly as big a meltdown as we have.

We're very anti-Foster and anti-Benson.
Need some help after Romo and Austin last night.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Wow.
Drew Brees is checking out of a play in the shotgun, looks to his right to call the check to his receivers, and the center snaps the ball to nobody 15 yards back. Vikings recover. What a sh*t show that was.
Makes me feel better about Faine

Meanwhile in Buffalo....
Reggie Bush seems to have forgotten the purpose of the running game is to GAIN yardage. And just in time for the Fantasy playoffs. Shaking my mother f’ing head.
Despite the 'Skins ineptness
They’re up 10-0 against the Giants, and just got the ball back after an Eli interception.

Quick question for Sander, Buc Wild, or anyone
Hello Guys I am new here but I have been reading your blogs for a while now and today I just decided to sign up. So my question is what do you guys think of the offensive coordinator from Carolina as a head coaching candidate for Tampa Bay I look at the things that he is doing with Cam Newton and I think that he could do amazing things with Josh Freeman, what are your thoughts
Eh, it depends, how involved with the offense would he be as HC? My guess is not as much as he wants.
Also, not sure Freeman can do things Newton can do.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Not as a runner, no
But he’s had success as OC before with some pretty bad players. Still pretty young. Would be a good candidate to look at, at least.
He's not very experienced
Aside from this year he only had two years as an OC previously, and was demoted to a positional coach in his next job. I think we’d be better off with a more experienced coach after the “youngry” debacle of Morris’ tenure.

Maddon's Mission

by Jonah Keri on Jun 19, 2010 10:31 PM EDT
There's a difference between being OC and playcaller
Although OC/HC combinations work more often than DC/HC combos.
And I doubt he’d turn down a head coaching job if he couldn’t call the plays. That would be pretty random.
I doubt he would turn down the HC only position, that wasn't what I was implying.
I want him to call the plays for our offense. How much would he be able to do that as just the HC and undermine his OC? He won’t take a lateral move to be our OC, which would be ideal, so if you want him to call the plays too, make him HC/OC.
Maddon's Mission
Make you want to kill him, then make you want to love him. Sly.
by Jonah Keri on Jun 19, 2010 10:31 PM EDT
Why not, we don't know how any unproven HC will do. Might as well and make sure he's good at something.
Other than what he shows you on the field, the only thing a HC candidate can show you is how good of a salesman he is in the interview room. It’s a coin flip at that point.
Maddon's Mission
Make you want to kill him, then make you want to love him. Sly.
by Jonah Keri on Jun 19, 2010 10:31 PM EDT
If your interview process is any good, you can find out a lot of things about candidates
Their philosophy on building a team, how they would run the team, what kind of discipline they’d administer, what they do about locker room incidents, what their philosophy on managing a game is etc etc
Playcalling isn’t all that relevant compared to all taht.
Questions someone selling you shit could probably answer with conviction.

by Jonah Keri on Jun 19, 2010 10:31 PM EDT
To me, I think the success of an OC/DC is a no nonsense way of showing how he got all of his guys on 1 page and had them working as a unit.
That speaks louder than words to me.

damn i need nicks to catch a td for me!!!
three missed chances today ughhhhhhhhhhhhh

I had a theory about Safety next year. Did anybody consider if we dont draft one like a Mark Barron, we move Cody Grimm to SS? I mean the guy if anything is a HITTER…I can see a Grimm and Jackson duo back there.
Thoughts?

i was saying that from the beginning
i hate sean jones. i like jackson and grimm

jackson ll be better next year with that rust off and hopefully grimm can stay healthy
id keep jones as safety depth.
Get it to Winslow. He's open!!!!
Understood, Sander. And if we draft one or sign one even better. But everybody appreciates Grimm’s blue collar work
by Marlon The Okayplayer on Dec 18, 2011 3:35 PM EST up reply actions
size not really a big issue.
however they do have to play fast. alot of undersized safetys that do pretty good. i think grimm would do good at ss. he dont have alot of range but he can hit and hecan cover better than jones
Get it to Winslow. He's open!!!!
True…and we can still draft or sign one for depth
by Marlon The Okayplayer on Dec 18, 2011 3:38 PM EST up reply actions
Problem if you don't have size is that having an eighth man in the box is a lot less effective
And it’s harder to stop tight ends.
Agreed….im all about whatever pick we have taking the best player available..be it CB, DE, LB, WR, RB or OL
by Marlon The Okayplayer on Dec 18, 2011 3:40 PM EST up reply actions
Eh, I wouldn't draft a DT there
But it doesn’t really matter, there’s no DT worth a high pick anyway.
im really leaning towards going hard in free agency on defense.
i dont want to go high rounds on defense
Get it to Winslow. He's open!!!!
Agreed on that as well. We can definitely get some playmakers at back and shore up the secondary
by Marlon The Okayplayer on Dec 18, 2011 3:47 PM EST up reply actions
The only 2 people worth our pick on O are Kalil and Blackmon
I think they’re both gone by the time we pick. I think we should trade down from one of the teams that wants a QB. Lots of good prospects in the first half of the first round and we need some extra picks.
Assuming we lose out.
Yugly.
I think we've got to do both
Ideally, I’d want us to grab Stephen Tulloch and Carlos Rogers in FA.

not neccessarily true.
grant it it would be nice to be a big safety. but you can still play the eighth man in the box if you are a undersized guy with speed. etc…..Troy Polamalu..

Right now for me
It’s Claiborne, Kuechly, or I’m disapointted. Though the draft is very far off and things could change.

I can think of 6 players I'd love

I think we’re picking a little high for the last 3, and am not sure any of the first 3 will be available.

by Marlon The Okayplayer on Dec 18, 2011 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

and Blackmon falling to us. I think I’d take him with Kalil and Claiborne gone if I couldn’t trade down.

as teams possibly ahead of us that may take Claiborne. If we draft Blackmon, do you maybe try and trade away Benn for a late draft pick or not?

Don't forget that JAX plays IND in week 17
and now that the Colts don’t have the stigma of a winless season hanging over them, they’re less likely to want to play themselves out of the number one pick.

Definitely a strong candidate
Seattle might also make a play, but they’d have to give up a lot more. If Orton keeps playing like he’s been playing today, the Chiefs might not be on the market for a new QB- -they could just let Orton and Cassel compete for the job.
