I really hope he comes back strong.

And with a HUGE chip on his shoulder. I think next year a lot of the focus is gonna be on Clayborn and Bowers. McCoy may be a little forgotten by opposing teams next year. That could help him get the stats everyone is wanting from him to not be called a bust. I don’t think he is a bust, or has been one to this point.

by flash_kiley on Dec 14, 2011 11:09 AM EST via mobile reply actions

He has been a disappointment not a bust imo

Before the injuries he was not playing like a #3 pick should imo, but he wasn’t playing like a bust either. He was making steady improvements though. Really hope he can stay on the field all next year.

This year, he was by far our best player on defense.

Just because you don’t see big sack numbers, doesn’t mean you can discredit his impact. Dude was a beast, he was double teamed almost every play and still managed to create disruption in both the run and pass game. Suh has struggled this year, and doesn’t nearly have the impact in the run game as GMC does. He has had a hard time with injuries, but when he is in there, he definitely looks like a top three pick.

He was definitely more disruptive this year than last year

I’m not sure about best player on our defense, but there isn’t a ton of competition. I think Price has been a little better than McCoy this year, and I would definitely say Clayborn is having a better year. I do not think he has been playing up to a 33 slot though.

In any case, he has been making huge strides since a slow start. If it weren’t for the injuries he’d be further along. I’d only call him a disappointment compared to his draft position. If he comes back healthy (probable) I’m pretty happy with him moving forward.

McCoy was light years better than Price when he was in there this year

Price doesn’t have the base strength to hold up well in run defense this year (probably because of his injuries), and while he’s had a few splash plays, his pass rush also frequently disappears.

by Sander on Dec 14, 2011 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

Eh

I’m not sure I agree with that, but I’m not about to go back and watch every play and take notes.

by aakks on Dec 14, 2011 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

Let me put it like this

When I watched this defense the first five games, McCoy jumped off the screen. I had to pay attention to Price to notice him.

by Sander on Dec 14, 2011 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't have the same impression

Price looked good to me and was showing more improvement as the season went on imo.

I’m not saying McCoy was bad or anything like that. I think the bust talk about him is ridiculous, but I don’t think he’s quite the force you guys think he is.

Yugly.

by aakks on Dec 14, 2011 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

Being a #3 pick.....

You say he isn’t a bust; therefore, he is a force because if you’re a #3 pick you can’t be labeled anything other than a bust if you don’t have a huge impact on the game.

by jBen05 on Dec 14, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

No, sorry I don't buy that

There is a huge amount of space between bust and force.

by aakks on Dec 14, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

When I think of someone worthy of a top 3 pick, I think of a future hall of famer.

I don’t want some guy who will take three years to develop into a decent player who is solid yet unspectacular. I want a Cam Newton type of player who is a game changer, not Robert Gallery who turned out to be a decent guard.

Price looked relatively good

Considering the offseason surgery etc. But I only noticed him on a few splash plays. McCoy jumped out to me on a regular basis.

This is not an indictment of Price as much as it is praise of McCoy.

by Sander on Dec 14, 2011 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

It just seems to me that you see QB sacks as a barometer of the quality of DL play.

GMC has been much better overall than any other defensive player. Sure Clayborn had more sacks, but he doesn’t have an impact in the run game like GMC had. Also, it’s hard to have as many sacks when your double teamed every play, leaving guys like Clayborn 1 on 1.

Oderint dum metuant

by jBen05 on Dec 14, 2011 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

No that isn't true

I’ve said many times that McCoy is a much bigger force than his sack totals indicate. I still think Clayborn has had a better year, and I still think there is an argument that Price has been better.

Yugly.

by aakks on Dec 14, 2011 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Sure they are better just for the fact that they played more.

But when they were all playing at the same time, just look at the tape, GMC looked much better. I’m no d line expert, but I can tell just from the disruption, that GMC had a bigger impact on the game.

My favorite part about this is no one is talking about Bowers. :)

If we can get our entire dline healthy and through an entire offseason, training camp, and preaseason next year I think we will see some of the expectations we have for them. Bowers, potentially the best of the four, hasn’t had a lot of buzz to this point. I understand he hasn’t put up a lot of stats to this point, but the sky is the limit for this line if it can gel. Heal up GMac.

by flash_kiley on Dec 14, 2011 12:38 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Bowers looks awesome, but he really had only the one game where he was dominant.

Just not a large enough sample size yet to say he’s better than GMC or Clayborn.

Where are the tackles then?

This huge impact on the run game doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. At all. The only game the run defense was above average with McCoy in the lineup was against Atlanta. You can say he got penetration, and changed the direction of the plays, but he isn’t getting to the ball carrier.

The total yardage vs. Detroit and Indy were good.

But those teams are almost never successful running the ball anyway. Can’t hang our hat on those two games in my opinion.

Ya at some point on here I posted the run totals

and didn’t see the connection to McCoy in the overall stats. However, if you watch the games you can see him getting the disruption. I think (speculating) that the problem is disruption isn’t enough when your linebackers can’t tackle and other players on the dline aren’t filling their gaps.

Yugly.

by aakks on Dec 14, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

The fact that he was able to create disruption even though he was double teamed almost the entire game is pretty impressive.

He shouldn’t be blamed because his teammates aren’t able to capitalize on the opportunities that GMC gave them. His style of play won’t rack up big numbers like Suh, but is a guy that creates disruption that his teammates should capitalize on. For example, he regularly gets in the backfield before the RB gets the ball, the running back then has to alter his path to get around him. This is when someone else on the D should tackle him, but that is the part we have trouble with.

I think McCoy played pretty well, but he is a top ten defensive tackle in this league yet and I'm not sure he'll ever be one.

His injuries are concerning. I want to see him play a whole season before I cast judgement. I would definitely say McCoy is above average and that’s something we don’t have a lot of on this defense.

*isn't a top ten

As of right now, I can agree with that.

With less injuries and more reps, I think he will be a top 10 DT.

Tackles are a terrible way to measure players, for numerous reasons

Don’t look at the stat sheet, just look at the game film. If you can look at the film of Gerald McCoy in the first five weeks of this season and not come away impressed, I don’t know what you’re looking at.

by Sander on Dec 14, 2011 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

If he isn't getting to the ball carrier and the run defense isn't improved

I don’t really see how he is having a great effect on the run game. He has a great first step. We knew that when we drafted him. That’s why he got drafted so high. He needs to close and make more splash plays.

Yeah mccoy is the motor of this defense

He was blowing up plays on almost every snap the first half of the season. My biggest concern are the injuries but the quality of play is top 3 for sure

by Carlitin1988 on Dec 14, 2011 11:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Nonsense

McCoy set things up and other players made the tackles because of that.

Look, just watch the tape. It’s obvious when you just watch it.

by Sander on Dec 15, 2011 7:15 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, not gonna watch hours of tape just so my opinion of McCoy changes.

We’ll see if he is dominant next year. I hope he is, and I hope our defense isn’t a sieve.

Rogers, Porter, Grimes, Finnegan

Get ONE! And draft a corner in the first or second round.

by flash_kiley on Dec 14, 2011 2:06 PM EST via mobile reply actions

We should have the best dline in the nfl in a couple of years

Now all those guys are young if we invest high draft picks in the secondary the next couple of years well be a top 5 defense
