Tampa Bay Buccaneers Player Contracts: Expiration Dates and Future Plans

NASHVILLE, TN - NOVEMBER 27: "Shiphead," a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, watches his team play against the Tennessee Titans at LP Field on November 27, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images)

As the Buccaneers have virtually eliminated themselves from playoff contention, it's time for us to start focusing on the future of this team. Will they improve themselves this offseason, and which needs need to be filled? And what about the longer term plans of the team?

All of that starts by seeing which contracts end when, and which needs will need to be filled. Conveniently, Rotoworld has an excellent contract database, allowing us to quickly ascertain the contract status of any one player. Collecting that data we get a good picture of each year's

As an example, the Bucs have 16 expiring player contracts this offseason. Four of those players will be either restricted (Lumpkin and Bennett) or exclusive rights (Blount and Parker) free agents, making it extremely unlikely they're going to move elsewhere.

While the Bucs have a lot of contracts to work out either this offseason (2012) or in 2014, 2013 is relatively quiet with just 9 expiring contracts. That's mostly the case because of the sparse 2009 draft, as the Bucs have just four players from that draft on their roster. With sixteen expiring contracts next year, the Bucs will be forced to overhaul a significant part of their roster again.

Hit the jump to see the full list of player contracts organized by years.

Regarding the players on the 2012 list, I think...

RB Kregg Blumpkin, QB Josh Johnson, OL James Lee, OL Demar Dotson, S Corey Lynch and CB Ronde Barber should all be shown the door.

Get K Connor Barth, RB Ernest Graham, OL Jeremy Zuttah , WRs Preston Parker re-signed and maybe S Sean Jones, WR Michael Spurlock and CB Elbert Mack (only if their salary demands are reasonable and commensurate with their skill level).

DE Michael Bennett and RB Legarrette Blount should both be tied up with long term deals to head off any unpleasant hold outs and/or bad feelings (see Donald Penn).

Dotson will at least be back

He looked very good in preseason (after an initially poor game) and has gotten a lot of playing time as the sixth lineman. He has the ability to challenge Trueblood for a starting position. Mostly because Trueblood sucks, but still. At the very least they won’t cut both Lee and Dotson. One of them will hang around for depth, and I’d bet it’s Dotson.

Spurlock won’t be re-signed. He hasn’t even been active the past three games, hasn’t returned kicks and has been thrown to all of three times or so (one of which resulted in a pick). He’s done. I can’t see the Bucs re-signing injured and old Earnest Graham either. They didn’t re-sign Caddy last year and he was younger and better.

I could also see the Bucs re-signing Corey Lynch for special teams/depth. And I think they re-sign Ronde if he’s still willing. He’s too big a part of what the Bucs do on defense, even though he’s clearly declining.

Maybe,

We can help Ronde Barber gradually become a secondary positions coach. While he loses his speed and probably some strength, he is still smart and has great instincts directing the secondary of a defense.

I do like the CB pick early on...

but like Morris Clayborn or Dre Kirkpatrick more than Dennard. I suspect the combine will put some space between them.

I bet we will end up selecting within the top 10, so we will see who is still there when we’re up.

Vontaze Burfict or Upshaw as a 2nd Round LB choice would be nice. SS Ray Ray Armstrong, FS Tim McDonald, RB Montee Ball, LB Alex Okafor and either ARK WRs Joe Adams or Jarius Wright would also be some good options for us later in the draft.

Good idea,

In the first round, I prefer a CB, with Barber retiring and Talib possibly in prison. Claiborne and Kirkpatrick seem like the best defensive backs in next year’s draft. Your other suggestions would also helps us improve.

I am also interested in LaMichael James and maybe a little later Darrell Scott, but I guess we will see what management decides to do with the running back position.

Quincy Black until 2016?

One... two... three... and cut!

I hope Quincy Black simply loses his job to a better player – but we have to look a little harder and open up the wallet in free agency. Camp competition between low round draft picks and undrafted F/As doesn’t necessarily raise the bar from a quality standpoint.

Then we will finally begin to take some steps forward.

I'd love it if we pursued Anthony Spencer to replace Hayes

and cut Black after using a high draft pick on his replacement.

A defense ranked #31 does not inspire confidence in one's defensive coordinator. Any head coach knows this: own up to it, Raheem- hire a full time DC and put your full focus on ONE of your jobs.

Great link, thanks

Keep Ronde Barber (if he’s willing to play another year), Connor Barth, Michael Bennett, LeGarrette Blount, Demar Dotson, Preston Parker, Elbert Mack, Jeremy Zuttah, and Josh Johnson. Possibly Earnest Graham, depending on his medical report- it’s harsh, but if he’s not capable of being a playmaker anymore we have to let him go.

Geno Hayes and Sean Jones are on the bubble- if we make moves to replace them in FA (with Anthony Spencer and LaRon Landry ideally), they should be shown the door. James Lee, Kregg Lumpkin, Corey Lynch, and Micheal Spurlock can all be let go without a second thought.
