Bucs offseason Must-Do's
Management: First off, give Rah and Dom long extensions. I've believed in both of them from day one despite all the haters, and they havent let me down yet. They've been dealt krap for cards when they both showed up here and now just look at what they have assembled for the 2011 season which will be greatness. Not to mention being a KSU student myself, I couldnt be happier with seeing Freeman develop into the youngest/best QB in the league was a great move by Rah and Dom. Also get a new DL coach (which i hear may actually be underway) because we were horrendous on that line.
To the should we resign the players or not discussion.
DO NOT Re-sign: Barrett Ruud, Tim Crowder, Mo Stovall, and Jeremy Trueblood. Barrett is the not the type of MLB we need and hes gonna have a high asking price. This tyrone kid that we have could be another great find by Dominik and put him in there and see what he can do, if hes a fail then put one of our young lbs in there and see what they can do. I think we have plenty of talented LBs so i dont see the need to draft one unless its a stud to replace ruud. Crowder didn't do jack for us on the line kinda like every other DE. Mo underproduced despite his prototypical size, and Trueblood never really improved despite having the reins on the T position a couple years, plus James Lee was a great find and he did great in my mind.
RE-SIGN: Caddy, Ronde, Black, Joseph, Gilmore, Hayward, Niko, Spurlock, Stylez, Barth, Lee, Okam, and Lynch I believe we should have caddy as the #3 back for one or two more years. Blount will learn the pass protection coverages and Huggy will be the younger scar back we need so theres no need to overpay for an old no knee'd caddy either. If he resigns somewhere else, then go out and sign a veteran RB. Ronde was above average and has just one more year in him tops. Joseph has pro bowl talent and needs to dominate more but hes a beast so you gotta resign him. Gilmore is the blocking TE we need behind K2. Hayward is one of those talented young LB's i believe we have. Niko will be used as ST only. Spurlock showed hes an actual WR and not just a KR. Stylez is the only DE to produce (which aint saying much but still) so resign him if not for competition only. Barth is a young talented kicker we found and believes we found a guy for the next 10 years. Lee was a great plugin for the season and should start in front of JT. Okam impressed me during the short time he had to pickup the D, and same goes with lynch while his fill in time for our slew of Safetys. Also give Blount at least a 5 year deal if hes continiuing his greatness midway through the season, because he could be the steal of year out-stealing (not a word) Mike Williams.
Draft: I dont care if we have to reach for a DE with our first pick, but our first round pick better be a D end or no playoffs for us again. That position killed us every pass play! we need a major upgrade at both ends position. Heck i wouldn't even mind doing what we did last year with out first two picks and draft DE's with the 1st and 2nd round. It will provide divedends just like our two young DTs will. With the third round i wouldnt mind grabing a young O linemen somewhere along the line, any position will help our depth. 4th round if we can find a steal with a ball hawk cornerback, we only had 2 or 3 cbs that were really solid during the year. After that i believe we draft a young MLB or jsut draft at the best talent available no matter the position.
Free Agency: The only positions I would approve a sign in the FA pool would be: Oline, DE, MLB, CB, or P
Do not sign Nmanda or however you spell it, he will be asking for bookoo money and even though we have the money, go sign somewhere else. The only players i would look at would be young players who still have upside left in them. I believe in singing the younger players who have more potential than signing a player who may be a little more better but is old. I just wouldnt wanna see much activity in Free agency unless we can find young players or we have to replace some players who we could not resign.

Man, you really jump right into things.
Zero comments, one post. Welcome to Bucs Nation.
I voted 50/50, but probably more like 75/25 (agree/disagree). I’m with you on most of the do not signs, but might differ on Stovall. Not that I’ll be heart-broken if he’s gone next year, but I think he’s good to keep around for depth/competition. Let’s say Benn doesn’t come back healthy, or two or more receivers go down with injuries next year… If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it as they say and our receiving corps ain’t broke. If Benn comes back healthy and Briscoe lights it up maybe Stovall will be expendable, until then…
I’m also down with taking two DE with the first two picks, but I think we should also take a look at LB’s earlier rather than later. You seem to think we have a bunch of talented guys but if we lose Ruud or Black we’re gonna be hurting for depth. Hayward played well and Watson may improve, but we’re gonna need some more depth there IMO. My preferred order for the draft would be along the lines of DE, DE, LB, CB, OL, ?, ?. That would change of course depending on our activity in Free Agency.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
If someone like Quinn were to drop a bit
I would love for us to trade up for him. There are a lot of talented DE’s in the draft and we should come out of the draft with 2.
This year could be very weird as the Draft may happen before Free Agency so I really see us filling needs through the draft then seeing who’s available for depth upgrades after.
good post
I dont really agree with you when it comes to the LB position. I think we have a lackluster LB corps and its been a while since we had STUDs playing the position. I like Ruud as the starter. Regardless on peoples ideas about the guy, he would be a big loss to our defense. I still would rank him as our best LB. Geno Hayes makes alot of splash plays but he needs to step it up in the consistency dept. and i’m not sold on Black at all at being a starter. I think we could definitely upgrade at the outside spots in rounds 2-4. I like McKenzie based on what I saw of him at USF, but he is still an unproven, untested commodity so I will reserve judgement on him.
Re-Sign RUUD
I don’t know how people can say get rid of Ruud!?! MLB in a 4-3 system needs to be very smart rather than very productive. They are the QB of the Defense and need to put players where they need to be and counter the offensive calls. Ruud is very smart in the Bucs system. Just watch his checks and counters. Any real Buc fan would see this and to say that Ruud is expendable is crazy. We don’t have any other real smart LBs that could do what he does. Think about it – Give him his $$.
My fakeness has finally been exposed...
and all the while I thought you needed a productive MLB. I say we sign Stephen Hawking for MLB. He’s pretty smart.
I feel so dumb…

i rather play with 10 guys on defense then to resign Ruud, guy plays with no passion, he plays on the field as calm as i am at my office job! ridiculous... do not sign ruud !!!
good first post man i agree with almost everything except for resigning Niko, and i believe we should go DE, OT, and third round either DE or LB

Niko is a valuable S/T guy when he doesn't commit stupid penalties.

I think Ruud is playing so subpar
And I don’t want to dog on our linebackers but I think Black & Hayes should lead more too.

Ruud is underrated.
Everyone liked to hate on Quarles when he was in the middle b/c his stat sheet looked so bland. In fact, I’d bet he and Ruud would have pretty similar numbers across the board. Quarles was invaluable to our defense and we took a major hit when he retired until Ruud matured. Yes haters, he could be more physical but it’s rare to find someone both cerebrally gifted and physically gifted like Ray Lewis or Urlacher. Ruud won’t be a hall of famer but he will continue to make sound, form tackles, recognize plays, and direct the defense and I hope he stays.

Wow
That has got to be the first time anyone ever called Ray Lewis “cerebrally gifted.”
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
This
I don’t find his pre-game speeches very motivating because of the grammar. Did he just coast through college or what. Impressive illumni for U of Miami.
I like it when he stops talking and just plays…

lol
I didn’t mean in the books just on the field. He is really amazing at diagnosing plays though I wouldn’t want him designing bridges.

I knew what you meant, and I wouldn't argue that.
Just an amusing phrase in relation to Ray Lewis. I saw an interview of his recently, some young, clean-cut sports reporter sitting across from him in what looked like the foyer of his mansion. That guy (Lewis) is almost Gary Busey-esque in his intensity. As in, he scares me, and I wouldn’t want him in the same room as my children. And yes, his grammar is deplorable.
Great player though.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
Also,
really agree with you on Okam. He really seemed to have that push ability to shed blocks that we lacked all year on the D-line.

Resign White? Raheem had his beef earlier in the year, I bet White doesn't return or is sunk in depth.
Number #1 priority is to sign a premiere DE, so he match with the upcoming top draft pick we all know is coming. Seriously, White shouldn’t be a factor on this team.
Priority #2 would be gathering available T’s and G’s, if we are to resume a 7th-ranked run game next season. Huggy’s ACL is probably healed by now.
White isn't a factor on this team...
and has proven it with many seasons of “meh” playing. I hope he is removed from the equation. A big F/A signing and a draft pick will render him useless – more so.

+1
I’ve grown very tired of watching White’s below average play. And even more tired of hearing his overconfident expectations.

He would be my first target in free agency
I think he will be tops on a lot of wish lists for teams needing oline help.
What about Jason Babin at DE?
Heading to the Pro Bowl and would fill a desperate need…
by Cracker Ball on Jan 17, 2011 2:56 PM EST up reply actions
Yep, him and Ray Edwards would fill needs.
However, I don’t know if Babin is a one year wonder or how much money he would want?

while you're out not re-signing B. Rudd....
your leading tackler this year, you also might want to consider releasing Tanard Jackson, and Geno Hayes. Those guys are just more trouble than they’re worth.
Mr. Talib also has issues and you just might be able to swap him for Ed Reed.
Definitely re-sign Ronde Barber, and also try to con Derrick Brooks out of retirement.
The return of a Mike Alstott to the backfield will really make our run game look mean and scary and work as an excellent analgesic to continue your Super Bowl narcosis. (ie. the must-do suggestions on this blog are about as sensible.)
Give it a rest already!
