Keep in mind that the team will likely make a few moves on the waiver wire tomorrow that will change the makeup of the roster.

The final cuts were:
CB Brandon Anderson
S Vince Anderson
RB Carlos Brown
WR Michael Clayton
C Jonathan Compas (waived/injured)
G Marc Dile
T Xavier Fulton
DE George Johnson
TE Jeron Mastrud
LB Rico McCoy
DT Dre Moore
DT Carlton Powell
TE Ryan Purvis
C Donovan Raiola
CB Derrick Roberson
LB Lee Robinson
DE James Ruffin
QB Jevan Snead
FB Rendrick Taylor
CB Trae Williams

Surprisingly, this means they keep both RB/returner Clifton Smith and FB Chris Pressley as well as both Michael Spurlock and Preston Parker.

Sadly, Demar Dotson has ended up on injured reserve. They only kept 8 O-linemen, with James Lee and Derek Hardman being the bubble players on that list.

Demar Dotson ending op on IR is a shame

I really liked the kid, heard a lot of positives about him.

Glad to see Preston Parker sticking around.

I am not sure he can get touches on offense. As a special teams player I think his impact will be felt.

Does anyone have an update 53 man roster and/or Depth Chart?

With Clifton Smith and Spurlock around, I don't see how he gets a chance on special teams

I think he’s going to be cut after game one, once Talib comes back, or if they see someone they like on the waiver wire. Probably move to the practice squad then.

Don’t have a 53-man roster anywhere, the one on the Bucs site hasn’t been updated yet.

by Sander on Sep 4, 2010 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought for sure Clifton Smith was gonna be cut

After Rah said he was looking for versatile players. Spurlock showed that he could catch and produce YAC, while C. Smith showed he was not an effective run. Why keep three return specialists? Hell I woulda kept one and if he went down put Stroughter on KR/PR, he small stature makes him hard to tackle and his quick feet is impressive!

by Titankillah on Sep 5, 2010 5:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I think last game really helped him

He showed he could function well as a third-down block in pass protection and as an outlet receiver

No Surprises here except dotson

I am doing a song and dance now that we have released mr clayton. THANK YOU. I think preston parker will def be on Practice squad but he was to good of a talent to put on the waiver wire for 24 hours. He will get called up if smith can’t control gout or spurlock starts opposite of Williams.

Morris cutting ward and clayton showed alot of gusto because he could have easily kept theses overpaid veterans around but he wants to become explosive, something the bucs have never had at the skill positions. Im excited.

Purvis

Isn’t anyone else the slightest big put out by the fact that Purvis is an outstanding young tight end who catches pretty much everything thrown near him and yet we’re keeping John Gilmore around instead? I mean I have nothing against Gilmore it’s just what has he done…. like at all… ever? Sure he’s a good blocking tight end however that’s just about all he’s good at. He’s not a red zone threat, he doesn’t create matchup problems for the defense, and on a team that’s getting younger faster and more talented I would have loved to have seen Purvis get a shot. He may not be the most athletically gifted guy but he’s got heart. He’s the kind of guy New England loves and they have had the kind of decade that I want for our boys in the pewter and gold!

by T-Jack on Sep 4, 2010 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with the sentiment.

I have a tough time believing Purvis won’t be the first signed to the practice squad. That said, if that happens — as we expect it will and should as long as the Bucs played this on the down-low as they should have — he’ll be given an opportunity like other young guys to make his way up the ladder and hopefully come into next offseason ready to compete for legit playing time. “Soldier’s” knees won’t hold up forever…

by jMagic09 on Sep 4, 2010 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah sadly, our TE depth is heavy

Otherwise I could of seen Purvis begin to make impact this year. As stated before, K2 is on his sixth knee injury. We’ll see his quick steps slowly deteriorate but I think he has 2-3 more years if that knee isn’t anymore harsh impacts (which probably will happen). Gilmore is maybe our best blocking TE, with Stevens beening the most rounded TE.

Purvis needs to stay positive and continue his work this season. Continue to hit the weights, keeping his hands soft and run more YAC drills. I see him making the cut next year.

by Titankillah on Sep 5, 2010 5:03 AM EDT up reply actions

New England loves blocking tight ends

They don’t do much else than block for them.

I don’t think Purvis showed all that much this preseason, though. He was a decent blocker and a decent pass catcher, but I don’t know if I could say he excelled at either – and John Gilmore does excel at blocking as a tight end.

As a redzone threat, we have Jerramy Stevens.

That said, I think he gets placed on practice squad and we’ll see him again next year.

by Sander on Sep 4, 2010 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Completely agree

Hope he’s the 1st one signed to the practice squad. Good hands and can run straight through defenders. Thought he might make the 53. Haven’t watched the Houston game yet, but didn’t blot his copy book in the 1st 3 games.

No physical talent is nonsense

His problem last year was that he took the wrong angles – that’s football intelligence. He has plenty of physical talent.

by Sander on Sep 4, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Physical Talent? pfftt...

I think the only talent that man really has is being in shape. He has no incredible tangibles, he’s not a freakish athletic. He isn’t the very strong, he isn’t very fast, he isn’t a sure tackler (watch last year), he isn’t a soft-handed defender. He isn’t in great position most of the time(maybe he if studied more). I thought he was a sure cut… I hope pitipyourdukes is right, Sabby being cut when Talib returns because he is just slack on this team… IMO though lol.

by Titankillah on Sep 5, 2010 5:09 AM EDT up reply actions

He's big and he's fast

That’s physical talent. And while he was terrible last year, he does seem to be a hard worker.

The team hopes they can coach him up and push him to be better. He’s still young and it wouldn’t be the first time a young safety looks terrible one year then great the next (Jermaine Phillips).

Besides, he’s a very good special teams player, too.

I disagree

I believe Sabby could be better this year… last year was the struggle of learning a new system

The Problem with J. Phillips was the retarded act of switching him to LB!!

I remember when WR’s were terrified to go up against T-Jack and Phillips, even though I think that tandem was shortlived. Besides Phillips weak forearms and his wife beating behavior, I thought he was very effective. I don’t think he is even in the NFL anymore.

by Titankillah on Sep 5, 2010 5:05 AM EDT up reply actions

He was very effective

And no, he isn’t in the NFL right now.

But do remember that Phillips had a terrible year starting (I think it was ’05) before he was a great starter.

There should not be that much concern

about Sabby and his role. I am pretty sure he will play the same role as Will Allen. Before Sabby became a starter, he was money coming off the bench and making splash plays I think in this upcoming season we will see the Sabby that made plays before he became a starter

Pretty Certain that Parker is the first to get moved to practice squad pending we sign another player or

when Talib comes back. Dominik repeatedly emphasized “For now” when referring to 7 WR and Parker with their roster position. No point in carrying 7 WR into the season.

We are playing keep away with parker

He is a good player and he will be moved to the practice squad because only 45 will be used on game day. Another guy who dominik hinted at being inactive on game day was Reggie brown because he said if you aren’t one of the top 3 recievers, you better be able to excel on special teams . Brown is strickly a WR.

1 Question i am waiting for the answer to is who is starting next to Williams at WR?

Sammie – Morris said he will play the slot even if he gets the start so Its kinda pointless to get excited about him starting. It just means he will play alot more snaps than usual. Will be hard to keep him fresh if he plays every snap.

Stovall – Was the starter but he has missed the last 2 weeks or so but Didn’t really see anyone step up infront of him. He holds consideration because of last years performance when he played solid

Benn – Came on strong in 4th game but only 1 catch the first 3 . Was that enough to give him the start? He shows the potential and that game may be the motivation he needed to have a great week of practice.

Brown – Veteran presence who is solid but doesn’t really look great. OK hands (better than CCC) but thats not saying much. He is just solid IMO . I think Morris is lookin for dynamic playmakers and Im not sold on his playmaking skill but could he get the start to just keep the seat warm for Stovall or Benn

Spurlock – Don’t rule this guy out, he has done nothing but make the most out of his opportunities. He shows speed, hands, versatility and he has been around for a few years in the NFL so he knows what it takes. I would not be surprised if he gets the start. He has shown the most improvement and has shown a ability to make plays as a WR.

Who do you have claiming the spot???

by tbbuc4 on Sep 5, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd say that, in 2 WR sets,

Sammie would get the nod right now as starting flanker opposite Mike Williams.

Bucs Claim C Ted Larsen from Patriots Waiver Wire

Bucs will need to release 1 player in order to make room, Who will it be? The bucs are WR Heavy with 7 and Safety heavy with 5. Could this be the end of Reggie Brown. I think he is the 1 WR that is expendable .

Here is the article of the signing of the 6’2 , 305 pound Center out of NC State. Many believed that the bucs would add to the OL because they only kept 8 linemen. Could OL Derek Hardman be released instead ?

by tbbuc4 on Sep 5, 2010 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree

with you there, Parker is a promising talent that the bucs obviously want to see more of or they would have cut him yesterday. Parker will be the best WR on the Practice squad. Brown has done little to prove his worth. Do you honestly see Brown helping this team with the emergence of Benn, sammie and Stovall? I can’t see it but I think that Dereck Hardman may be the one to get cut because Lee can backup T, Zuttah can back up G and Larsen can backup C. I think that this is the way it will playout.

I really think that it is to early to make a decision on the WR position without any practices since the final preseason game. I think these guys will get a chance to battle it out for the top 6 and if brown is in the top 6, parker goes Practice squad. Now if Brown doesn’t make top 6, he gets cut. I highly doubt the bucs will just outright cut Parker after keeping him when he has gotten rave reviews all offseason .

by tbbuc4 on Sep 5, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Parker has done less than Brown

Yes, he’s returned decently. But currently there’s no place for him in the return game with Clifton Smith, Stroughter and Spurlock.

Dominik explicitly said Parker earned the “53rd spot”. If we sign anyone, he’ll be the first one to be cut. He’ll then be placed on the practice squad – but to get to the practice squad, he first needs to be cut and clear waivers.

by Sander on Sep 5, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt the bucs go crazy in waiver wire pickups

I am willing to bet that spurlock wont be released for a waiver wire guy. This guy has been hanging around for years and he has been a great contributor in the preseason and has EARNED a spot. If anyone is released , it won’t be Spurlock. No WAY!

Now if you say parker or Brown , i say maybe but not spurlock. When Talib comes back, i think it may be mack who gets cut.

Also Parker has not been getting rave reviews all offseason

He’s looked decent but Brown has gotten much better reviews during the offseason.

by Sander on Sep 5, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This is true

There is no doubt that the bucs will put parker on the Practice squad. Im not sure how that works but I know they aren’t going to cut him for a Center. In all of the press conferences morris had , he brought up parkers playmaking ability.

In Dominik press conference yesterday he mentioned Brown as a guy who is in jeopardy of not being active if he can’t claim one of the top 3 WR spots. Parker IMO prob won’t see much time if any on the active roster this year but I think they want to keep him around. Much like they have done with Spurlock.

by tbbuc4 on Sep 5, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Practice Squad works as follows

It’s a group of 8 players that you can’t use on gameday but can practice, and don’t count against the 53-man roster. To sign someone to practice squad he has to be a free agent, so to move someone to practice squad they need to cut him first and then sign him to practice squad – and hope another team doesn’t pick him up off waivers. Which is why Parker needs to be cut for him to be moved to practice squad.

Brown may be in risk of not being active but he’s in no danger of being moved to the practice squad, because he isn’t eligible for the practice squad having accrued several active seasons in the NFL. Being inactive on gameday is something entirely different from being on the practice squad.

To add someone to your practice squad they have to be off your roster first. Claiming someone off waivers means you’re signing him to our active roster, because otherwise why would any team need to have their player clear waivers before getting them to the PS?

Also, news just came out that they signed both Larsen and Lumpkin to the roster and released Peanut and Hardman.

Titans released RB LeGarrette Blount

Yeah sure, he comes with a tad bit of baggage, but at 6ft 240lbs, he’s a pretty big guy. I thought he was pretty decent, but lost out to the second string spot to Javon Ringer behind Chris Johnson.

by rjblitz02 on Sep 5, 2010 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

the problem with Ruud is that he works well in pass coverage but not run plays

as far as I can tell with my limited understanding of sports. When we had a defensive line like a sieve, having a LB play that far back caused problems. Hopefully if our D-line improves against the run it’ll give Ruud and the other LBs more time to gang-tackle the running back.

Witty's 2010 Draft review is full of meaty goodness. What you mean, you're vegan?! Sigh. Just read it.

by witty on Sep 5, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

The problem is also that people only see "tackle behind line, he can't play!"

And they don’t understand that often the reason he’s that far back is that he’s covering assignments he has to cover.
See: http://passingonthegame.blogspot.com/2010/08/quick-note.html

Now he’s never going to be a very aggressive MLB, but people criticise him way too much for what he does.

"That's fine, he can cover assignments somewhere else after the season. Because the writing is on the wall, dude's getting replaced."

Reading comprehension.

Yes

I explained why he tackles where he does – because he often has no choice because of the assignments he has. You say you don’t care and hate him anyway – why?

And I don’t see the writing on the wall at all. He’s the starting MLB.

I see you haven't actually read the link I posted

http://passingonthegame.blogspot.com/2010/08/quick-note.html

He also has more responsibilities, including coverage responsibilities, than just that.

Also, I still don’t see how “the writing is on the wall”.

Yes, I read the shit Steve White wrote. And in the article he's talking about how it's Ruud's responsibilities to play paddy cake with the FB while the other players on the field make the stop. Of course there are cover responsibilities...

but all of that is out the window when you pick up the run.

And the writing is on the wall because he would have gotten his contract by now since he started bitching about it a few years ago. They'll upgrade his position in the off-season.

P.S. He makes too many tackles 10 yards down the field.

Maybe they will

But you can’t read anything into “he didn’t get a contract”. Neither did Penn until he started holding out.

Maybe they didn't like Ruud's poker face?

Yes, he explains what Ruud is supposed to be doing

Then he explains that Ruud is doing his job properly.

So…what is your problem with him then?

Porn stache, unsanitary.

Doug, I can't stand Rudd either and I've voiced it many times.

But as of right now, there’s really nothing we can do about it unless we make some kind of super mega-deal to pick up another MLB, and that ain’t happening.

If an optimist had his left arm chewed off by an alligator, he might say in a pleasant and hopeful voice, "Well this isn't to bad, I don't have a left arm anymore but at least nobody will ever ask me if I'm left-handed or right-handed" but most of us would say something more along the lines of "Aaaaaa! My arm! My arm!" DANIEL HANDLER (as Lemony Snicket)

he's gone after this year.

and he isn’t hating on quincy black, so he can’t be hating on our best LB.

We’d get so many kids off every game it was great.

CLIFTON SMITH JUST RELEASED

In order to make room for C Larsen and RB Lumpkin. Clifton made a decent showing in the last game but it wasn’t enough. The bucs are going to use Lumpkin as a power back and Huggins as the change of pace. Guess the bucs didn’t want to wait and see if clifton can stay healthy. Guess return game is going to be placed on spurlock and parker (maybe) . Don’t see sammie doing this if he claims the starting position. Huggins will see some time back there returning also.
