Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Why not move Ronde Barber to safety to replace Tanard Jackson

Why not move Ronde Barber to Free Safety and Elbert Mack to right corner or E.J. Biggers. With Ronde Barber's  extremely fast  reaction and quick reaction ability, he would do a great job at free safety he might also intercept a lot of balls. He's  the first corner back in the history of the NFL to record at least 500 tackles and 20 sacks in his career. He also has 39 career interceptions, and one of the original members of Tony Dungy's Tampa 2 Defense.I think there should be a poll to see what everyone else thinks.

Ronde is pretty undersized.

And slow at that. Let’s see what Grimm can do. Ronde is doing a fantastic job at the nickel position.

Lol, sorry for shooting down the idea ;-)

Ronde is not playing Nickel. Still starting.

Not that I don't think Ronde can't tackle, but...

I say we just let Ronde finish his last season breaking up passes and hopefully getting the occasional pick.

If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Occasional pick?

He has 2 picks in 2 games.

ummm….This is not pop warner football, you don’t just switch a guy after season starts after he has played 14 Hall of Fame like years. We kept 5 safeties and we are only down 1, lets give the other 3 a chance or 2 (grimm and lynch, please no Sabby). The safeties haveto cover alot of territory and be able to be strong against the run. I think that ronde is fine where he is and Grimm is ready to play. The guy is smart and is a student of the game. Atleast give him a chance if we gave sabby a WHOLE SEASON. After this week, if things don’t go well . We can search the Free Agent Market.

Last guy we tried to switch was Jermaine phillips to LB and he is out of the NFL now. There is to many players out there to start converting players to things that they aren’t .

I agree

Unless we can make McCoy our QB, Talib our Center and Penn our Kick Returner. Then I’m all for it.

If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

You're absolutely right...

… and QB Heinz Ward would make a terrible WR.

What's the point of these pics?

so basically you pointed out that Barber had trouble covering T.O in his prime, Burress in his prime, and had trouble tackling AP 1 on 1 and Deangelo Williams 1 on 1. Guess what, most CB or safeties in this league would have the same problem against T.O(6-4) Burress(6-6) AP( best and most physical RB in the league) and DWill( Pro-Bowler with dynamite speed) So what’s your point? Because against the other 99% of the league i think he’d be a great safety. Even TJax got help against great wideouts. If he started at FS he’d get help from Talib, Biggers, or Lewis when needed against big physical beasts. Thats common sense.

Moving Ronde is not a bad idea...

assuming somebody is ready to step into his CB spot. It certainly couldn’t be any worse, based on what I watched last Sunday.

by Cracker Ball on Sep 28, 2010 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

that's a big assumption. who would that be exactly?

and why would you not think to put that person back as a safety?

If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

by Kilgore on Sep 28, 2010 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

FS is generally involved more in passing situations...

and the SS in run support, no? Ronde can still cover fairly well, and since we are clearly grasping at straws to fill that position – why not? It could extend his career a couple of years if he takes to it. He might enjoy the challenge of a new position.

FS are near the LOS more often than not.

The point of these pictures was to draw out random viewers who would see them, become annoyed, join Bucs Nation, make one or two comments and then disappear never to be heard from again.

Safeties are a bigger part of run defense than CB’s. Some corner backs are more physical than others, but Ronde isn’t exactly that type of player. Yes he can blitz the QB well but that’s usually because he isn’t blocked when he does so. Yes he can tackle well but those are usually outside runs, screens and short passes. He’s better at breaking up plays and limiting damage from his “corner” of the field. He’s one of the best at what he does and he’s been doing it for years upon years. If we move him to the center of the field we’ll be seeing lots more situations like the ones above, and doing a franchise veteran a huge disservice.

If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I think this is a great idea

For next year. Let him spend a preseason preparing for the position.

by jrscott on Sep 27, 2010 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

Still so opposed to the idea?

Ronde can tackle despite the above pictures. From the FS spot, he could direct the back end of defense much more effectively. After seeing how Grimm looked against the Steelers, I’m having doubts.

5 picks out of the first 100 in a draft saturated with talent. Yes, I'm optimistic.
