Podcast #2 - Freeman, Ward, and a tiny bit of the game
Ask and you shall receive. UNFNole and I were able to record podcast #2 earlier today and cover a couple of the current discussion items surrounding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- Freeman's injury
- Derrick Ward and his chance to make the roster
- Huggins and his recent play
- The return specialist battle
- A quick look at what to expect from the defense.
Hopefully you guys enjoy this one. Please feel free to share any feedback, both on topics you want to hear discussed as well as structure. I will note that we tried a new way of recording it this time, so let us know if it's better, the same or worse. Enjoy!

I don't think Spurlock's a better returner than Peanut
He’s not a slouch, but he’s not really better or equal. The reason you name (he returned two for touchdowns) is a bit of a fallacy – his consistent production in terms of yardage is a lot lower than Peanut, and I don’t think those touchdown runs would not have happened had Peanut been there. To illustrate: Smith’s kick return average: 28 yards/return over 67 returns vs Spurlock’s 25/return over 27 returns. Spurlock does have a better punt return average, but only returned 7 punts so that’s much more likely to simply be variance rather than a skill difference.
I disagree Clayton’s going to be on the depth chart high. People who are locks: Williams, Benn, Brown, Stovall, Stroughter. So they’d have to keep Clayton over Spurlock, which given Clayton’s lack of special teams impact and Spurlock’s preseason performances is unlikely to happen.
I think it’s also much, much, much too soon to give up on Benn. Seriously. He’s 2 preseason games in. There were some rumours about learning disabilities pre-draft if I recall correctly, and it’s likely he’ll just take longer to adjust to the NFL – plenty of receivers take a few years to break out. Look at last year’s star receivers who barely produced before that: Miles Austin (4th year), Steve Smith Giants (3rd year), Sidney Rice(3rd year). Compared to Mike Williams he’s disappointing, but this stuff is not unexpected from rookie receivers. Look at Golden Tate, the first guy selected behind Bryant: he’s done jack-all too and looked pretty eh. That doesn’t mean he’s going to be bad or bust – just that he needs more time.
Not sure Stovall is a lock by any means.
Nobody has given up on Benn. Pretty sure we both said quite the opposite. All I said is that he hasn’t produced or seperated himself from anyone. We both mentioned that he had the talent to be a very good WR, just hasn’t hit his stride yet. I just don’t think he will be high, at all, on the depth chart.

Stovall has to be a lock
Unless his injury is a lot more serious than they’ve said so far. He’s a special teams ace, he was the starting flanker in the first preseason game, he’s had a good offseason and he looked decent at the end of last year with Freeman throwing to him. You can say none of those things about Clayton.
You’re probably right about what you said about Benn, but the tone of the conversation was pretty negative – though that may just be me. Anyway, the comment wasn’t aimed all that specifically at you guys, just more a general comment as I’ve seen people here and there appear down on Benn already.
I am "down" on Benn, but just because I thought he could be a reliable 3rd WR.
Again, it’s expectations vs the reality of the game.
I just can’t fathom cutting Spurlock at this point. Preseason hero, regular season zero? Maybe, but we have to go by what we have seen.

However, I still think Benn can be a solid player in the league for a long time....
He’s just further behind the curve than Williams is.

I really hope so...

I'm not concerned with Benn. I knew he was a project. I'd jus tlike to see him with a good QB throwing to him, let us see what he can do.
Peanut also has a concussion or two to deal with and if we’re looking at return ability, I don’t see where we lose much if anything with Spurlock.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
I think we lose something
But I don’t think it’ll be that disastrous. Spurlock and Stroughter can handle return duties well, though not as well as Peanut, but Peanut’s onesidedness makes him somewhat expendable if the team is short on roster spots. Which it appears to be in a few places, at FB and S for instance.
I cannot wait to hear Bruce's shrill voice!

Nice listen
I agree with you on rotating Huggins and Ward with the first and second teamers on Saturday to see what they have. Give Caddy either one series or just sit him out. Give Carlos Brown some late reps to spell the backs for the last quarter.
Spurlock also might have the ability to mix in some gimmick plays, as he started seven games at QB for Ole Miss in 2005. He also still holds the Mississippi High School record for passing yards and TD passes in one game…for whatever that’s worth. If he could utilize some kind of run/pass option, then I guess that’s something that might help him stick out, in addition to his well-established return abilities. Then again, if they could’ve utilized that, one might think they would have by now.
Disagree on Clayton making the squad. I don’t think name is going to mean that much when they’re looking to put their top 53 on the field. Clayton seems to be behind Williams, Stroughter, Stovall, Brown, and Benn. Clayton will be between a rock and a hard spot if it comes down to him and a guy like Spurlock for a 6th WR spot, who could be arguably just as effective as Clayton in the passing game (1 to 2 catches per game), while offering skills in the return game.
