Mark Sanchise vs. Josh Freeman.

I have seen dozens of articles and interviews about how great Mark Sanchez is going to be this year and in the future. The Jets had the number one defense in the NFL and the number one running game last year while Freeman... well lets just say he had a lot less to work with. Now if you compare their stat lines from last year, Freeman had 10 TD's, 18 INT, 1855 yards, with a 59.8 rating; Sanchez had 12 TD's, 20 INT's, 2,444 yards, and a 63.0 rating.

Mark Sanchez did slightly better, but again he had a much better team around him, and he started the entire year.  If everyone is gushing about Sanchez, we should be doing back flips at what Freeman will be able to do with an improved WR corp and a year of experience. I think when all is said and done we came away with the best QB in the 09 draft.

So much Homerism.

Quite a bit

No offense, every fan/team/blog is going to have their share of homerism.

My vote was for Matthew Stafford. Not because I hate the Jets and think Snatchez is a tool, and not because I have any sort of anti-Florida-teams-not-named-the-Dolphins bias (which in all honesty, I don’t; hell, I don’t even live within 1,000 miles of Miami).

I think Sanchez will, in all honesty, be a cusp-of-the-Super-Bowl-type quarterback in his career. I don’t know that I see him winning one, though I won’t deny that he may at least make a SB in his career. But, even more honestly, I think Stafford may take the Lions farther than Sanchez will the Jets, in Matt’s prime and the apex of Detroit’s run with Schwartz in Motown. I think the Jets will just always have that something extra while Rex and Mark are there. Fortunately, that extra something will conveniently stop them from winning it.

Freeman? Well, I haven’t seen enough of him. He could be a solid quarterback. He could be what Flacco will be within the next couple of seasons. I don’t know yet. I also don’t know that I necessarily see Super Bowl aspirations for the Buccs any time soon, and again, no offense.

Stafford seems to have that extra extra something, and the Lions are a team that are quickly growing on me. I think he will be the most productive of this group, and may tie with (if not best) Sanchez in the category of winning on the most important stage. Sanchez may flirt with the playoffs every year now, but give Stafford just a bit more to work with, and I think they start to surprise people in a year or two.

Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

I understand what you're saying about the Lions, but you left out probably the biggest factor:

The Fords. They find ways to screw everything up.

Hey

so long as Matt Millen is miles away from that organization, they’re better off.

Linking to Jets?

Is there a way to post it on the Jets site? I’d just like a debate to kill time before the season.

Its gonna be fun

watching Freeman grow up with his receivers… Benn, Williams, Stroughter along with Freeman are all young, athletic guys will tons of potential. If the defense can keep the other offense of the field, this will be a much improved passing game.

You should have mentioned # of games played as well.

Sanchez played the entire season where Freeman played only half and still matched his numbers. I hope that doesn’t mean 40 int’s though.

Sanchez's stats may have been better

But let’s not forget that he also played in 5 more games (started 6 more) than Freeman. So Freeman’s INT’s would have been higher but his yardage, TD’s and possibly QB Rating would have been higher with less targets.

Didn't we have this exact discussion/poll last week?

In any case, you’re looking at entirely the wrong stats. Aggregation is a very poor way of looking at these stats. It should be obvious from the fact that Freeman only started 9 games that he’s going to have lower total numbers in all categories. Instead, you want to look at rate stats that rate on a per-game or preferably on a per-play basis. QB Rating is largely a worthless and entirely arbitrary stat that is composed of several other stats but actually tells you less about a QB than those individual stats would.

By most of those measures (except interceptions per attempt) Freeman had slightly better numbers, and Stafford had the worst numbers of the three, but the difference was functionally negligible.

I think that Schottenheimer does a great job of playing to Sanchez’s strengths, but I also think that the offense he runs is very simplified. Compared to the support he got he also performed the worst of the three QBs.
Friend of mine is convinced Sanchez is going to buckle under the pressure of being a Jets QB. I don’t know about that, but I think it won’t take long for the Jets fans to turn against Sanchez again if he has an early bad outing. Everyone seems to have forgotten that the Jets fans were calling for Sanchez’s head on a platter by midseason.

we did but the poster is a new guy

and i am kinda glad that he put it up again cause i switched my vote to Freeman
i was a little weary about choosing him over stafford before but after the game against miami i have a feeling Freeman will be able to put up similar numbers to Stafford
I don’t thik Sanchez can hang with either one of them

Without the hype of New York

It really seems like the feeling is it’s more of a comparison between Stafford and Freeman. It’ll be fun to compare the 3 this season.

Detroit and Tampa are both rebuilding, but it seems that Detroit is trying to use more free agents and the Buc’s are almost strictly through the draft. It’ll be interesting to see which method produces faster results.

Free agency

It’ll be more interesting to see which method produces more lasting results.

Though it’s hardly going to be a fair comparison. The Lions started with far less talent than the Bucs did.

Need a combination of the two. It's not how much you spend, it's how you spend it.

True

Glad we lost the bidding war with Haynesworth, but Vincent looks to be a good addition.

by Pirate25 on Aug 18, 2010 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually

we offered the most money but Haynesworth chose the washington market over ours. And I hope Vincent gets to start this upcoming game with the 1st team

I thought it was guaranteed vs total.

I thought I read we offered more total, but Washington gave more guaranteed money. Either way we dodged a bullet. Every team needs some luck to turn around.

Good Morning Fans

Hope you are all doing well. Just to start things out, I want to officially introduce myself on your blog. Just so you know, I am a contractor in Iraq supporting the troops. I chose this post as a way to better break myself into your site. I commented on another post, but nothing too major.

To get back to the subject here, I think that Sanchez will have a better year. I am not OVERLY impressed with Sanchez, but I still think he is surrounded by better talent than Freeman. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that Freeman has a lot of potential, but he is basically working with a brand new team with only one year in service. The Bucs are still coming together, and I think in a year or two they will look a lot better than last year. I see moderate improvement from them this year, but I still feel like the Jets have more unity and better receivers. Their running game took a hit, but I think it is still pretty strong with the additions that they made. I think Freeman will have a better year than last year, and I have heard he is making strides at improving every aspect of his game. Barring injury though, Sanchez’s numbers will probably look better than Freemans until next year or the year after.
