Bucs Biggest Rival?
The Bucs once had great rivalries with the Green Bay Packers, St. Louis Rams, and Philadelphia Eagles. The faces have changed and we no longer play these teams ever year. These days I ask, who do you feel is the Bucs biggest rival. The Atlanta Falcons, our closest NFC foe have been a problem recently with the development of Matt Ryan and Mike Smith's defense. The New Orleans Saints, defending Super Bowl Champions have always given us trouble, especially in 2002. The Carolina Panthers started a mini-rivalry in the early 2000's, and have re intensified it in recent years including Dante Wesley's hit on Clifton Smith last season.
Back when Brett Favre was a Packer we would always have fierce battles in the old NFC Central. We all remember Sapp, and his hit on Chad Clifton. The past two seasons we have beaten Green Bay in Tampa, but is this enough to still consider them a main rival?
Philadelphia used to own us in the playoffs. Well at least until Ronde Barber picked Donovan McNabb and tore down th Vet sending the Bucs to Super Bowl XXXVII. Recent games included Matt Bryant's 62 yd FG to beat the Eagles in 2006. This season the Eagles destroyed us 33-14 at the Linc.
However, to this day my most hated team, and the rivalry I loved the most was the old Rams-Bucs rivalry in the late 90's-early 2000's. The 1999 NFC Championship game crushed me. I thought we had it, and out of nowhere comes Ricky Proehl with a TD catch to take the lead, and eventual 11-6 win. The ensuing drive with the Bert Emmaunuel (no)catch killed me. I was 11 years old and my life was Bucs football. After that game it seemed as though we had the Rams number. The 2000 MNF game, which may still rank as the most exciting game in Bucs history with Warrick Dunn and Shaun King willing us to a 38-35 victory. in 2001 another MNF game, this time in St. Louis, but the Bucs prevailed 24-17. In 2002, the last of the Monday night battles with the Rams, the Bucs once again won 26-14, and would go on to win the Super Bowl that had eluded them for so many years.
So Buc fans I ask you, who do you feel as the Bucs biggest rival?

Carolina
I say the Panthers. We always have good games against them. They are always tough no matter what the respective records of each teams. Saints are good competition but I dont feel that rivalry vibe when we play them. Its usually feast or famine when we play NO.
Panthers it is.
I also believe the Panthers are our foes. It always seems that it’s us or them, especially after the 2008 season, when we were almost there and they got the first place and atlanta second. I had no passing game last year and they still beat us so I DON’T LIKE THEM.
Plus, SAINTS are like the "no contest" team. I mean they have been through so much that I can't hate them.
Every team has a bunch of johnny-come-lately fans
It really comes with the territory of success. Just wait until they start losing and all of those people with zero ties to the New Orleans area switch to the next team.
I feel you
1 guy I know claimed to be a Saint fan for a long time but when asked could not tell me, the name of their head coach or their QB before Brees

I have seen the Saints play in Tampa many times over the past 17 years
and all the Saints fans from those 17 years wouldn’t add up to all of them that showed up this past season, when they still hadn’t lost a game. The Superdome was a very empty and hollow building on Sundays, until now. Just watch, when the Saints start to fade away, it will go back to the way it was.
Stay thirsty my friends.
I hate their guts
My prayers go out for the city, but I hate the Saints guts

I'm trying to bite my tongue over stuff like this.
Yeah, it was unfortunate that it happened, and I wish it had never did. But my sympathy died out YEARS ago.
Stay thirsty my friends.
Panthers
I can’t stand any team wearing Carolina blue. Not to mention the injuries those guys have laid on our team over the past few seasons. Spleen anyone, or how about the Clifton Smith punt return early hit. The embarrassment of getting absolutely run over in the past two years. We need payback!!
Cadillac's knee, too. That was against Carolina.
Broke Booger McFarland’s hand back in ’02, as well. Lots of tough games between these two teams.

carolina
they have embarassed us too many times. and let’s face it they really aren’t that good. If this was a most hated poll I would have to vote a tie for the eagles and rams as no. 1.

Clearly Carolina is our biggest rival.
However, if you are asking for teams I hate the most it is far and away Filthy.

Carolina
They’ve been difficult to beat, which always spikes the dislike and frustration that drives a good rivalry.
They aren’t the team I dislike the most though.
Cannons... fire them.

I went with the Eagles
I hate their fans more than anything else. I guess Carolina is the logical choice but I don’t hate them. Whereas, I hate the Eagles.
It’s tough to hate the Saints considering that their history mirrors Tampa’s (minus Katrina).
Because of the NFL divisional realignment...
it would now have to be Carolina. GB is still up there too. Who could ever forget Chris Bermans “Bay of Pigs” label. Pretty funny. We don’t really play PHI, STL or the Raiders often enough to consider that a rivalry, but those that have good memories, there is certainly no love lost. Just a long time ago.

I remember my hate for Philly everytime I go to a sports bar on Sundays.
E – A – G – L – E – S
EAGLES!
VOMIT
Rams, Green Bay, and Philly could of all been made officially our rivals at one point.
But the league and other circumstances have all but neutralized those, though we still have an interesting history with GB which includes last year’s Orange Game and the bad blood still exists between the fans Tampa and Philly. Especially after cross-sports meetings such as Lightning – Flyers games during the Lightning’s run and the Rays – Phillies games during the World Series, and of course the Bucs and Eagles games in the cold over the years. Doesn’t hurt that we won in the last football game in Veterans Stadium and the first in Licoln Financial Field.
But as it stands right now, it’d definitely be the Carolina in this specific sport. Our team needs to rise back up before we can start duking it out with the Eagles again.
i'd say
the cats…i hate them….everything down 2 their lame colors and shitty city…oh and lets not 4get oakland…..i hate them even more
Panthers by far
I would say that is or most traditional rival dating back to the new NFC south would be the Cats, we usually own the Falcons and Saints .
I was ecstatic to hear about the Rams game in 2000, I was on the edge of my seat during that game. Two plays I want to mention is, 1 at the beginning Faulk was running dancing doing what he do, he got to the second level of the D and made a cut, Lynch came from out of nowhere and popped the mess out of Faulk he went flying in the air. The next is 1 of the key plays when we needed a big play, King went real deep to Jacquez Green but Green had to wait for the pass on the sideline, he caught the pass and payed for it, while he was waiting on the pass some DB read the play and came over and put a crucial hit on Green, he took 1 for the team . That whole game was an adrenaline rush 1 I would never forget about. Good article Nick Shepro, you refreshed some good memories .
I miss playing the NFC Central.
If we would have stayed in the Central, GB would be the logical choice, but it has to be the kittens of Charlotte.
Stay thirsty my friends.
Green Bay
It was when we were in the3 same division in the 90’s. Now I also said Carolina.
It SHOULD be a division opponent
The Falcons and Saints have their own long-standing rivalry with each other, and each considers their games with the other to be far bigger games than they do their games with you.
As for your ‘rivalry’ with the Rams, it goes all the way back to the Los Angeles Rams of 1979. LmAo. :)
-
The glass is more than half-full.
Completely agree - has to be a divisional opponent.
NFC South been going long enough to generate rivalries. I too get more worked up about Carolina than the Saints or Falcons. Must be the powder blue uniforms.
Eagles won’t even think of Bucs as a rivalry when they have Dallas, Washington & Big Blue.
Likewise, GB still have Chicago and the Vikes, what was there will be diluted for them by now.
Good point.
A rivalry has to be two sided. While I don’t think thY the filthy eagles would consider us a rival, I am certain that there they don’t care for us much. Again, it isclear that Carolina is a traditional rivalry, though it hasn’t had much relevence in several years.

The last big game between us and the Panthers
was in Grudens last season, it was the beginning of the end for us,coming into that game we were 1 of the best teams in the league and they exploited our weakness and every team after that used the same formula to beat us, even the sorry Raiders . The panthers have took a lot from Tampa, Chris Sims Career, and they set back Cadillac career. The tides are turning though, we are rebuilding our team through a youth movement, they are taking a different approach which in the long run I feel we will be better
How are we taking a different approach?
I know you probably don’t follow Panthers football that much, just like I don’t follow Bucs football that much but we just had a huge veteren purge and our strategy is all about rebuilding through the draft, young blood and all that. I do agree that Tampa will be a great team in the next couple of years. I also believe you will see strides and Improvements this year. I know this is only my opinion but I think it was a huge mistake to get rid of Gruden, then again I’m sure you guys have your reasons, but I will make a bold prediction-Morris tenure will be short lived. I don’t think he’s the answer!
When I die, I want to go peacefully Like mt Grandfather did, in his sleep--not screaming like the passenger in his car
I agree with you about Morris and I catch a lot of flack for it.
Some think because he’s employed by the Bucs he’s the greatest ever, which of course is not true. They should have kept Gruden and got rid of Allen, but they should have sat down with Gruden and tell him how it is too. The Glazers are very snakelike and behind the scenes kind of owners and they don’t work like that.
Stay thirsty my friends.
Right now the rivalry is with Carolina
Overall history of the team? I agree that when we were back in the NFC Central the big rivalry was with Green Bay (mostly fighting for the bottom of the division). The big games in the mid-80s were of course against Chicago, but victories against them pretty few.
Philly and St. Louis (post-LA) Rams were occasional opponents but mostly just for the postseasons.
Now that we’re in the NFC South, when it was formed in 2002 I figured our big rivalry would be with the New Orleans Saints. Both of us teams with long histories of bad years who by the 2000s were fighting for the playoffs every year. But all the tough nasty games have turned out to be against the Carolina Panthers. The signature moment is now that blatant early hit on Clifton Smith by Dante (BURN IN HELL!) Wesley.
Based on the team history, this is how I’d have it:
Current Rivalry: Carolina Panthers
Rival 2003-1999: St. Louis Rams
Rival 2002-1996: Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles
Rival 1995-1985: Would anyone want to be our rival? Ahem.
Rival 1989-1979: Chicago Bears
Teams of note:
Current division rivals not yet mentioned: New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons
Former division rivals not yet mentioned: Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings
Teams we could beat (ha-ha!): Buffalo Bills, Saints, Cardinals (both St. Louis and Arizona)
Teams that could beat us (d’oh!) like a pinata: Dallas Cowboys, any team on the West Coast we had to visit for away games
Intrastate teams that never developed as rivals: Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Orlando Predators (well, they played in a whole different football league!)
Witty's 2010 Draft review is full of meaty goodness. What you mean, you're vegan?! Sigh. Just read it.
We just don't have the true rivalry atmosphere with NO, especially since our really competitive years where when they were really bad.
Also, our Eagles rivalry extends further then 2002. Can’t forget the first game in Lincoln Financial game and the Matt Bryant game.
Going by the division
you usually compile the win and lost total, to find out who has been the most dominate in the division. I do not know where Tampa stands in the NFC south, but we haft to have 1 of the better total records. Tampa is in a position right now to build on what they have already established in the NFC South or, fall to the bottom of the ranks.
back in the day....
It was the Bears for me. Mostly because some of my cousins lived in Chicago and there was a lot of trash talking going on.
Then came the late 90’s early 00’s and it seemed to me (I’m probably wrong) that Philly was knocking us out of the playoffs every year. So a strong case can be made for Philly.
However, I voted the Panthers because since the division change they’ve been our biggest rival. In my mind, Atlanta and New Orleans have only recently started doing well.
Also, not much to do with rivalry, I don’t like teams that don’t have a home city. Carolina Panthers? Which Carolina? New England Patriots? Minnesota Vikings? Just a pick a damn city already!
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
I hate to point out....
But your showing your ignorance since your team doesn’t truly have a home city either. Tampa Bay is not a city it is technically a body of water. The city is Tampa Florida.
I hate the Panthers
I hate them like, pouring some spoiled milk in a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch I hate it I hate them. But down the line Clausen is going to hate playing us Bucs.
Interesting.

Don't get us wrong, I'm not a Falcons fan
but the Panthers just make me want to throw up. Part of it is the respect I had/have for Dunn, so it took some of the sting of playing against the Falcons out and my utter disdain for Delhomme, Kris Jenkins (back in the day) and Dan Morgan.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
As a Falcons fan
I’m appalled by the utter disregard the Falcons are getting here. And then I remember something: when was the last great game between our two teams? And I look at all the Panthers/Bucs games and all the Saints/Falcons games and I begin to understand.
Still, I’m sure Dave (the Falconer) still hates your team more than anything else, so you’ve got that going for you.
You have opinions. We all do. Some of yours may have to do with the Falcons. Sign up today and share them.
Also a Falcons fan -
I think there have been some really good games between Tampa and Atlanta, but I think the rivalry is tempered by our fans and your fans just not pissing each other off as much as Saints fans and Panthers fans piss all of us off…
By the way, may want to change the layout of the poll – it looks like Carolina is giving you the finger right now
HAHAHA HAHA!!!!!!!!
That was hilarious. It does look like that. I’m leaving after this. I just had to say … WOW. I had no idea you guys hated us Panthers that much. That was an overwhelming majority. I don’t feel that way about your team. In fact, you guys are the division rivals I least consider that way.
I feel bad that the Panthers set Cadillac Williams back like that. That was real unfortunate, ‘cause he is a great player and I fear him every time we play each other. The Dante Wesley thing was ridiculous. He isn’t on the team anymore, and for good reason. It was one thing to do what he did, but it was a whole other thing to act angry about it afterwards like it wasn’t his fault or something.
Anyways, sorry you guys feel that way.
stuff 'bout stuff.
