Trying to Get Rid of Clayton
In addition to DTs Ryan Sims and Chris Hovan, the Bucs are currently trying to unload Michael Clayton.
Clayton, a former first-round pick, became one of the worst re-signings in league history when GM Mark Dominik gave him a five-year, $24 million contract last year. He went on to catch 16 passes in 11 starts. Clayton has scored three TDs in the past five seasons. He'll end up being released. Apr. 25 - 9:57 pm et

This makes me extremely happy to hear that he will at least be cut. I really thought Clayton would come around one of these years but "these years" have not seem to "come around" quick, if at all. I am also not surprised that Hovan and Sims will possibly be traded or released because they will not get playing time with McCoy, Price, and Miller on the team. Hovan has played at DT for many Bucs games and I will miss his black makeup on his face during the game. Sims on the other hand never did much for me so I say good riddance. I am very excited to see what the news guys can do and to get rid of the old.
Since the Bucs are trying to move these players, what do you think we could get out of them if anything at all?

Osi
The players that were drafted will fill in their shoes . They do seem like a package ofr Osi right I think the Giants will welcome them along with a 2nd round pick maybe . I think that Tampa has a plan to bring in another pass rusher
Didn't even think of that
I would love to get Osi on this team. He would be an immediate upgrade to our rush. I think it would take less than a 2nd rounder though, maybe a 3rd.
are yalll crazy?what on earth makes yall think the bucs will spend a DIME more than they have tooo???? the glazers went and bought the english soccer club!!!and bc its an ENGLISH soccer club fans boycotted the seats in the stadium bc the glazers bought them out!…..THEY HAVE NO MONEY this year is an uncapped year! D.E. peppers was a F.A. if they were going to spend money they would have done it on someone like him…..NO CHANCE OF OSI OR JOHN HENDERSON OR ANYONE ELSE WITH A BIG NAME no chance
Nice statement bucs fan 5
But Osi will not cost as much as peppers
by keysersoze19 on Apr 30, 2010 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions
The purchase of Man U was years ago
And the Glazers have a lot more expensive business interests that aren’t as high profile
They may be cheap (I don’t think so, but they could be), but it’s not likely they’re cheap because of Man U. If they’re cheap, they’re cheap because that’s who they are.
I want nothing to do with Henderson
and Peppers was a free agent but wanted more money than most teams wanted to give him. Those two players not coming here isnt about being cheap.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Osi or someone
Either they will wait till next year and draft the best edge rusher on the board or , they will trade like I mention work up some kind of package or , through the next free agency process which is in a few months they will pick someone up
Benn
Benn plays the same receiver role as Clayton, as the split end. My understanding is that Williams and Brown are both Flankers, and Stovall is another split end. Stroughter is our obvious slot receiver, so I would say without Clayton we have this pretty wrapped up.
The question is if any team will want Clayton? He is a good blocker with the minuscule chance of having a decent season. Not sure I would give anything … maybe a money situation where trading Clayton would benefit both teams? I can’t really see that happening either.
I have to think that we would be on Osi, as we have been on most of the ends that were in free agency but didn’t bite. Sadly though, I don’t see how we could get Osi, the giants have said they are not trading him. Also, I believe JPP was the worst DE in the draft, so, I don’t think he is ging to push Osi from the starting spot. Maybe by next year JPP will have developed more to push him, but that is next year.
hmmm clayton had one of the best rookie seasons ever for a rookie wideout! big ben said clayton should have been rookie of the year not him! anyway hmmm if clayton was a first rounder been is a 2nd and williams a 4th what on earth makes ANYONE think any of those 2 will be better than clayton…..anyways williams will be outta the n.f.l. within 3 years….hes a horrible character person…has major off the field issues….and again we havent spent a DIME in F.A. osi will not happen!
You are a true buc fan bucsfan5
I say that cause you holding down Clayton a little too hard while he did have a productive rookie season he was the only person to throw to . Anthony A-train Thomas 2001 AP rookie of the year had a productive rookie season but that was about all he did he is now a free agent . Tampa did they homework on Williams he will only be a problem for other teams DBs . Benn is as physical as Clayton but he is way more athletic . Reggie Brown has come in for Clayton insurance

The same reason that Jamarcus Russell was a #1 pick and Tom Brady was a 6th rounder
Players don’t play to their draft slot. Just because Clayton was a 1st and Benn was a 2nd and Williams a 4th doesnt mean they are worse than Clayton. That’s ridiculous logic.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
We would be lucky just to get a seventh rounder for all three of them.
At least Leftwich could throw the ball. None of these three can do jack.
I wish we could get something for Clayton, but unless some team just wants to piss off their fan base
we’ll be cutting him for nothing. I think we can all agree, Dominik included, that the contract was a mistake, but its better to cut ties now, with no penalties. Admitting a mistake is alright, continuing to feed the monster isn’t.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
We get something by cutting him
We get not having Clayton anywhere near the football this season.

At this point we would have to pay somebody to take him
He is a total bust at WR maybe they should move him to TE or put him on defense.

Sometimes I think that Dominik has his head in the clouds.
He is high if he thinks anyone in their right mind is going to willingly take on that contract. Its like he doesn’t know that Clayton sucks. We should just cut him before he has another check in the bank.

Eh, nothing wrong with trying to trade
Who knows, maybe some team will think he needs a change of scenery to turn it around. Very small chance, but there’s no real downside to keeping him around for another week or so.
I'm sure that someone will think that.
But he is virtually untradeable because of the horrible contract. Once he is cut I’m sure he’ll catch on somewhere as a reclamation project, but not for 5M per season. I don’t blame Dominik for doing his due diligence in looking for a trade, but I really hope he isn’t actually expecting offers to come in. Also, of all the things withheld from the media, this seems like a pretty stupid announcement to make. Maybe they are under the impression that he is a fan favorite or something. I just hope that our front office isn’t calling around to other teams and dangling Clayton like he is an asset. I can just imagine the scenario.
Dom: "Hey Bob. Mark Dominik from the Buccaneers here. Listen, I’ve got a great offer for you. A former first round draft pick that still has a lot of upside. Unfortunately his situation here in Tampa has become untenable, but I’ll be happy to trade you his bloated contract for the low, low price of 5M per season.

You trade marked them, Are they new companies?
Do they have stock value?
I was the head of the Eric Berry bandwagon- Im sad to say its partially over.
Keep it building,Matthew Barnaby Bandwagon!!!
No stock value...
but anytime you mention them by name, there is a residual due.

I still think Clayton has something left in the tank......
but his time here is up. Too much ill will between him and the fans. We will always remember that rookie year though. Ahh the promise he showed…………..
You said "I still think Clayton has something left in the tank....."
Everyone agrees with you. You seem to be the only person that thinks it gasoline in there though….
The more you guys dog him out...
the more I am starting to pull for the guy to find a niche.

Then you will have to add another team to your "a fan of" section
because his poor production and high salary makes him imminently cut-able. Probably won’t be playing for us later this year.
Fear
What if he goes to another team and finds that old magic of yesterday? What if an entire off season with the new offense, some young guns to push him, and no injury issues combine to light the old Clayton fires here in Tampa. If he somehow has a great year, will the fans forgive the last few years? Both of these may be unlikely, but anything can happen. I would love to see him move to TE, put a couple pounds of muscle on and startr blocking!
They can't trade Clayton
nearly every scenario has him getting cut, so why should a team lose a draft pick on him when they can sit and wait for the waiver wire?
Witty's 2010 Draft review is full of meaty goodness. What you mean, you're vegan?! Sigh. Just read it.
This should be Clayton role
Even though he was a waste of pick and contract this is how Clayton can help this team out ,Special Teams and playing that Jurevicius or Ike Hillard role . Those guys were not called on a lot they were almost like a 3rd down wideout , they made timely catches and there was not a whole lot of pressure on them . Is that too much to ask for Clayton
Catching the ball is too much to ask for Clayton
and he WILL be gone before the season begins. His production does not justify his salary. Ask Hovan how that scenario works out.

I think there is a market out there for Clayton
One man trash is another man treasure , just like the Reggie Brown situation. If Clayton does not get traded he will not get cut , that does not make sense economically speaking
Reggie value on our team is higher than his value on his former team
Even with the rookies we drafted he is are best bet as a number 1 guy
by keysersoze19 on Apr 29, 2010 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions
Thats true... only because his former team was a good PHI team
and we drafted 1 rookie S very late. You are being extremely generous with the whole “treasure” thing, methinks.
by Cracker Ball on Apr 29, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions
He won't be our #1, our rookies will out perform him.
Williams is the shizz, Brown ain’t got anything on the kid. Brown will never be anything more than a #3.
Stay thirsty my friends.
Reggie is
A nice route runner with nice hands , he is not extremely fast but if you don’t respect his speed he will burn you . People talk about this guy but ,probably never really watched his game cause , what they say about him is nonsense .

His 395.66 yards a year average proves you wrong sir. And that was inflated by one year.
His last game as an Eagle he got 7 yards, 13 the game before that.
Stay thirsty my friends.
Just because he put up those numbers don't make him sorry
What numbers did Moss put up before he went to the Pats they weren’t that good , or the numbers Joey Porter put up before he went to the Dolphins they weren’t that good , Or even Chester Taylor numbers before he went to the Vikings they weren’t that good , all together that is a weak argument

Not really
Reggie Brown got buried on the depth chart behind an influx of talented players. That really hurts his per season average through no real lack of talent.
He’s never going to be a superstar but he can deliver a decent #2 performance.
It does make sense economically. If they cut him, they don't pay him. No guaranteed salaries.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
You still get that money
Just cause you get cut you still get payed , if he does something that is detrimental to his contract then they can terminate his contract
by keysersoze19 on Apr 29, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions
You do not get paid if you get cut.
Why else do you think guys get cut and then re-sign with the same team the next day for less. The only money that is guaranteed is up front money at the front end of the contract.
"Football is not a game but a religion, a metaphysical island of fundamental truth in a highly verbalized, disguised society, a throwback of 30,000 generations of anthropological time." ~ Arnold Mandell
If any player gets cut today, he receives nothing outside of the guaranteed money.
Clayton’s salary is not guaranteed. Cutting him today saves the Bucs the balance of his contract.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Good info
that is new to me the question no is why haven’t we cut him yet
by keysersoze19 on Apr 29, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Until he is taking a roster spot from someone who deserves it, he won't be cut.
For one, the front office has to admit they made a mistake. Two, you want to make sure he is done. You have paid him a good sum of money in guarantees (signing bonus, roster bonus etc). If they cut him, they get nothing out of that money. So it’s a matter of last resort, but we appear headed that way.
Football is the only sport without guaranteed salaries (well, I dont know about hockey, I’ll defer to John on that one). Basketball and baseball salaries are guaranteed. So if you sign a 5 year $100MM deal today, you are guaranteed to get that money, even if you are cut tomorrow.
Football is different, you only get your guaranteed money and whatever your salary is for however long you are on the team.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
I have not herd no headlines leaning towards cutting him
With no guaranteed contract it’s the most logical thing to do , just like with the Hovan situation . Maybe they want to see him compete with these rookies in training camp , who knows 1 thing I do know there has been nothing done to say Clayton will be gone .
by keysersoze19 on Apr 29, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions
He's been on the trading block
And there have been persistent rumours that he is going to be cut. Just recently Dominik on radio said about Josh Freeman: " He’s excited to play with the two young guys and Sammie Stroughter and Reggie Brown.""
No mention of Clayton.
He probably has through training camp to do something
or he will be cut. Claytons last bonus was guaranteed, but no more. He will have to earn his roster spot now or hit the pavement.
by Cracker Ball on Apr 29, 2010 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Salary doesn't kick in until game 1 in September, unless there's a roster bonus.
Stay thirsty my friends.
i thought you said clayton will be released?he well get 1 more chance!maybe not as a starter but he will get a few more balls thrown his way to see if the bucs really want to loose that money!….hes one of the most physical W.R. in the nfl….and hes dang good at hitting ppl just not catching the ball….the guy didnt bc a first round pick cause he cant catch the ball….playing W.R. is mental when your going through a slump…..when you start to question yourself and hearing ppl like all of us talking crap about you and how you do your job…..its hard to turn around as a W.R…..WE ALL KNOW CLAYTON CAN DO IT (80+ CATCHES 1000 YARDS AND 7 T.D.S 2nd in rookie voting and i will quote ben rothlesburger saying “clayton deserved to be rookie of the year not me”)…..give the guy a break and lay off him…its not our job to tell someone how awful they do their job…when your start doubting yourself you fight yourself inside and out and start slumping….he just needs his confidence back….raheem knows that!and sees that….if all the fans would lay off him he could prolly just go out and PLAY
This is the most logical comment on this post
that is the proof right there in a nut shell on why Clayton is not gone very convincing
by keysersoze19 on Apr 30, 2010 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions
So we are going to ignore the last few years, the money we paid him and the fact that no one else wants him?
What proof is there that he will come back? I can line up 5 seasons worth of data and give you another 30-40 games I’ve seen with my own two eyes on why he will not be back.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Really now?
He did fine in week 1 last season, which should’ve given him confidence. And then he started playing badly and dropping balls again.
Giving people second chances is fine. But he’s performed very poorly for 5 seasons in a row now. There’s no reason to think that this season will be the one he turns it around.
He's had 5 years to work out of a slump
He’s been paid tens of millions of dollars to come out of a slump. He’s had literally hundreds of passes thrown his way to get out of a slump. One year does not make a player worth holding onto. They already paid his guaranteed money, now its an issue if he deserves a roster spot. With 5-6 WRs ahead of him, I doubt he sticks.
Raheem gave him a chance last year, he publicly stood by Clayton after Game 1 agaisnt Dallas daring anyone to question him. Clayton vanished the rest of the season. He’s done. He’s not worth his salary, we have other players at that position. See ya later #80
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Let me get this right...
… you’re saying that if we all stop complaining about Clayton he’ll stop feeling the pressure and start producing again? Is he a member of this blog?
How many season are considered a "slump"
he has been basically dead weight after is rookie season. I predict Clayton will be cut during training camp. He had no trade interest from other teams and his big fat stupid salary makes him expendable.
No bang-for-your-buck there…
Do you guys think they might renegotiate his contract
and keep him aorund for depth?
Why would Clayton renegotiate his contract?
He probably feels he is worth the money he gets…
by Cracker Ball on Apr 30, 2010 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe he would, but I doubt the team would.
It was a bad decision to give him that contract, not saying resigning him was a bad thing, but it shouldn’t have been for that kind of money.
Stay thirsty my friends.
I'll say it was a bad thing. Unproductive for a few seasons in a row
usually means you will be shown the door… not rewarded with an big extention that should have been given to AB instead. No wonder AB got all sour in the locker room.
?
I don’t know what the strategy was in signing Clayton and not giving AB a long term deal , but it’s a good question for Mark to answer
by keysersoze19 on May 4, 2010 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm saying resigning him at a much lower salary and no up front money.
The contract he got was crap, only handed out by an unqualified GM.
Stay thirsty my friends.
unqualified
Mark had another offer on the horizon before he became our GM . By the way this team is being built he seems very qualified to me . Mistakes are going to happen no team built a SuperBowl champ without any mistakes
Dominik had an interview... with the Chiefs
as did many others. The KC blog site sounded pretty relieved that he did not get it. Not enough experience they noted.
I have to agree…
Why
Compare the two franchises our look better long term and short compared to the Chiefs . They had two high draft positions and we had 1 we are still in better position than them
How so? They've been making moves to get better. Other than the draft which we were forced to do have we done to get better?
Please don’t say Reggie Brown.
Stay thirsty my friends.
I can look at their roster all I want and them ours, we'll both be saying who's that guy? anyway.
Stay thirsty my friends.
Not really
I say at least 3 to 4 times a week either NFL live or NFL network has had something positive to say about a Buccaneer new or old , I can’t say the same for the Chiefs
Impossible to say...
but I do wish they would have hired Dom.
