Grading the Units: Week 11

Thought I would post this in Fanposts. I am currently on a road trip with friends that will culminate in attending the Ravens game this weekend. Therefore this is a quick grading the units segment this week:

Star-divide

Offense: B

Solid, if not spectacular. They did a great job controlling the clock with some productive drives. Although there were some punts mixed in there, it was nice to see 0 in the turnover column and 21 points on the board. Any time that is the  case the team will certainly be in the ball game. Freeman now has a 14/5 ratio this year which is flat out incredible. Although there are alot of QB's performing well, it's nice to see Freeman take on the leader and control the game. There are 24 NFL QB's completing 60% of their passes, a sign of the times in this offensive minded league. Blount and Caddy seem to be sharing more of the football (not in terms of carries, but in terms of being on the field and making plays).

Defense: A+

0 points, 23 rushing yards allowed to Frank Gore. That pretty much sums it up. I was completely flabbergasted (in a good way), and did no t think they had any chance of stopping #21.  Although the Bucs should be grateful Troy Smith has little to no pocket presence, the D-line did an outstanding job on  Sunday. Most of us here have criticized the line this year for not making plays (for good reason, because it's true), but it was great to see all the hard work pay off for those guys. Let's just hope McCoy's injury isn't serious, I'm sure most were fearing the worst when looking at it live.

Special Teams: C

Aside from the 1 boomer by Malone, it seemed like punting was somewhat of a project. Of course it was pretty irrelevant in the end, but when playing a field position brand of football its necessary to get as much yardage as possible in Punts/Returns. Barth's miss was a bit concerning, especially when considering he has only made 6 out of his last 10 attempts. We figure to be in close games down the stretch, so he has to correct whatever is causing him to be inaccurate of late.

Overall: B+

Winning by 3 TD's on the road is an awesome accomplishment for such a young football team. It appears now that the Bucs will be playing meaningful December football. Un-freaking-believable. Let's just hope we show up in Baltimore. I know I will.

I disagree.

This is an overall A+ game. It’s extremely hard to call it anything less than an “A+” when you go on the road, in a place you’ve almost never won, against one of the best backs in the league, against a team that has won 3 of their last 4 and you completely shut them out. Yes, Barth’s misses lately have me miffed but honestly, we didn’t really need his field goals. Our D played the way we always thought they could and against a top tier defense against the run, we racked up over 150 yards. We protected the ball well also. I understand that I might be seeing the game with a bit of “rose colored glasses” but living on the West Coast (I’m originally from Florida and grew up a Buccaneer fan – since ’76) I know the troubles the Bucs have had here on the West Coast. This is one game where you can lavish the team. It was outstanding across the board in my eyes :)

I agree with Jarbarian

It is not an easy thing to shut out an NFL team no matter how bad they are and to do it in an away game the overall grade should be an A.

Regarding Freeman

Don Banks had this juicy stat in his power rankings this week:

And try this stat on for size: Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman has now attempted 290 passes this season, the same number he threw last year as a rookie. But while he threw 18 picks in 2009 (6.2 interception percentage), he has just five this season (1.7). In the last 30 years, he’s the first QB to go from an INT percentage of higher than 6.0 to less than 2.0 in a single season.
